SCICON® RIDER BAG
After you have collected your registration pack with accreditation, please continue to the rider bag bedouin to collect your bag. This is the only bag that we transport between each race village while you are riding.
Stuck on the cross tube (top tube) of your bike in order to identify your bike if the number board is removed.
Reserve and find your tent when you arrive at each race village. Don’t forget to take your tent tag with you to the next stage!
Must be worn during the entire duration of the event, on and off the bike.
Securely fitted on the front of your bike. Number boards may not be modified, cut, or obscured by cables.
STEP 1
You will find prestik/blu tack on the back of the transponder, which provides cushioning and protection.
STEP 2
Thread the cable tie through the transponder eyelet and around the fork, with ratchet at the back. Tighten approximately 100mm above the skewer.
STEP 3
Trim the cable tie back to the ratchet.
TIMING
Each rider must securely fasten the timing transponder to the fork with the cable ties provided.
If you booked the coach transfer, check that a bright orange ‘bike transfer’ sticker is on the back of your number board.

PROLOGUE START TIMESYou will find your start time in your online profile, on the race register on cape-epic.com, or you can access it via the Epic Series App. It is crucial that you and your partner check-in at the designated call up area 20min before your allocated start time. If a team misses their start time, they will have to start at the back of the field and their time will be taken from their allocated start time.
Please make use of the warm-up stationary bikes at the Virgin Active activation near the Prologue start chute. To prevent any interference with the race, you will not have access onto the mountain and it is advised that you warm-up on the stationary bikes only.
DAY BAG HOLDING AREAOn Prologue day, you can check-in your bag at the holding area at the rider bag bedouin next to the Chill Zone. Please ensure you check-out your bags by 14:00.
PARKINGIf you are driving to the Prologue, please park in the public parking areas just off Rhodes Drive and use the main entrance through the subway (see map).
BIKE PARKAs you cross the finish line, you may hand your bike to our bike park assistants, who will store it in the bike park. You must collect your bike from the bike park before 14:00. Note your bike will only be washed once checked into the bike park in Ceres. You are the only person who can check-out your bike with your rider numbered wristband – your supporters or mechanic will not have access to the bike park unless specific arrangements have been made prior to the start of the race.
Remember to not leave bike computers and other valuable items on your bike after crossing the finish line.
TRANSPORT TO CERESThe drive from UCT to the first race village, in Ceres, takes approximately two hours. The race village will be fully operational from 12:00, including the bike wash facility.

PARKING
Parking for your supporters is available in Val de Vie Estate. Please ask them to enter the estate via the new Berg River Bridge entrance and follow the signage to the designated parking area.
ONCE YOU ARE AN OFFICIAL FINISHER…
The Grand Finale is a busy and exciting day! To help you through the process smoothly and ensure you don’t miss out on any opportunities, here is a preview of what you can expect once you’ve crossed that finish line:
• In exchange for your timing transponder (2 per team) and your SPOT tracking unit (1 per team) you will receive a R1000 gift card per item. This card allows you to withdraw
cash on site at the Absa ATM or at any ATM within South Africa – and of course you can also use it at the Absa Cape Epic Merchandise Store.
• Hand your bike to our bike park assistants, who will have it washed and stored in the bike park for you.
• You will receive your medal on stage, with Sportograf capturing the moment for you. Your images from the entire race week will be available on sportograf.com within a few days after the race.
• Once you leave the stage you enter the finishers’ tent where you will receive your finisher t-shirt and Woolworths hamper.
• If you are a new or existing Amabubesi member, or a new Epic Legend, look out for the dedicated area in the finishers’ tent.
GETTING BACK TO CAPE TOWN
If you’ve purchased a post-accommodation package, remember to collect your luggage and bike bag/box from the Val de Vie bag truck. All bikes must be packed into a bike bag/box in order to be transported. Your rider bag and bike bag/box must be checked-in at the coach transfer area for transport before boarding the coach and heading back to Cape Town.
If you have pre-hired an Avis vehicle, please collect it at the collection zone in Val de Vie before 16:00. Avis will have information desks at each race village and venue.

TRACKING
IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY: +27 21 426 7716After hours race hospital: +27 73 537 5053
To activate the unit please follow these instructions:
Each team receives one SPOT Gen3 Tracking Unit, which, using satellite technology, allows us to locate you in case of an emergency on route. This unit is also what sends the signal to our SPOT Live Rider Tracking, allowing your friends, family and the rest of the world to follow your race online, regardless of the rugged and off-the-grid terrain you may be moving through.
South Africa’s medical care system requires you to produce proof of medical insurance or a credit card in case of admission to hospital. While all medical services on route and at the Mediclinic Race Hospital are free of charge, we advise you to ride with your credit card should you have to be admitted to a permanent facility.
STEP 1: Before the start of the Prologue, switch the device on by holding down the power button until the unit lights start flashing green.
IMPORTANT: The unit will automatically go into rest mode when no movement is detected – once activated at the Prologue DO NOT switch it off. If you notice the power light flashing red or have any other issues with the unit, please report to the SPOT gazebo located next to Woolworths recovery at each race village.
STEP 3: Insert the device into the back pocket of your cycling shirt or attach it, using cable ties, onto your hydration pack, ensuring the SPOT logo is facing the sky, (flat side down, flashing side up). Be careful not to flip the device around as this will affect the tracking.
S.O.S. If you need medical assistance urgently, ensure the device has good line of sight to the sky, open the S.O.S. flap and hold down the red S.O.S. button until it flashes green. HELP: If you are withdrawing from the
race, but it is NOT a medical emergency and you merely require transport, ensure the device has good line of sight to the sky, open the Help flap (the one with the hands) and press down the HELP button until it flashes green.
STEP 2: Once the lights stop flashing press the footprint button to enable the GPS tracking, the GPS light will flash green.
PLEASE NOTE: If either the HELP or S.O.S. buttons are pressed by mistake, you can hold either button down again until it flashes red, this will cancel the help request.
19 2020 ABSA CAPE EPIC RIDER MANUAL
Please note the recommended on-route protocol:
• Stay where you are and don’t leave your injured partner.
• If you have cell phone reception, call the emergency number on your wristband accreditation.
• If you see a marshal or race official - make contact as that person will most likely have a radio with them.
• The tracking unit will continue to send the S.O.S. signal to the Venue Operations Centre until assistance arrives and disables it (even if you do not have cell phone reception).
• Remember there is only one tracking unit per team. We do not recommend that the uninjured rider continues on their own before assistance has arrived.
• If you come across another team with an injured rider, do NOT activate your emergency unit, but only the unit of the injured rider.
DAILY START
Seeding:
From Stage 1, all teams are seeded daily according to their position in the overall GC. Make sure to check which batch you are in and what your start time is, as these can differ from the previous day. These details are available on the Epic Series App and www.cape-epic.com.
The chutes open 30 min prior to the start and close 10 minutes before their specific start time – make sure to check into your start chute on time.
Woolworths Chute Bag:
You can place clothing that you want to wear in the start chute, but not ride with, in the Woolworths Chute Bag that you received on registration day. Simply leave it in the container at the side of the chute before you set off, and it will be waiting for you in the Woolworths Recovery Zone when you finish.
20
Temperatures can soar to the extremes and, unless you are a racing snake, we strongly suggest utilising a hydration pack with a carrying capacity of 3-litres.
Most days feature four water points on the route, three of which are full-service water points while one is a strategically placed hydro point. The location of these is clearly marked on your Oakley route profile stickers.
HYDRO POINTSThese are stocked with water, USN, Coke, and Woolworths snacks
FULL-SERVICE WATER POINTSThe full-service water points offer Powerade, water, Coke, USN products, and a wide variety of Woolworths foods such as potatoes, muffins, sandwiches, fruit and savoury snacks. In addition, you will find the following services:
• Medics Should you require medical assistance, please report to the medical team easily recognised by the blue & white Mediclinic tent.
• Squirt Lube Service The Squirt team will lube your chain for you – even a Formula One driver doesn’t abandon their car in the pit stop. For maximum efficiency, please stay with your bike and back-pedal.
• Oakley Cleaning Station A sunglasses cleaning station, courtesy of Oakley, is available to all riders at two of the water points.
• Tech Zones The Neutral Tech Zones are manned by experienced mechanics who will be able to assist with repairs. A selection of both Shimano and SRAM parts will be available as well as Mitas tyres. We recommend that you carry any parts that are specific to your bike like a derailleur hanger and brake pads. While the service is free, you will be required to pay immediately for any parts, so please ensure you carry your credit card with you or have Zapper set-up on your phone. Sadly too many riders have in the past defaulted on their payments and you will therefore not be able to receive parts without payment at the water point.
WP 1 STRIP STOPThe first water point each day features a “strip stop” where you can place any unwanted cycling kit into a team bag (provided to you at the water point), label it, and collect it at the race village.
The Strip Stop bag together with the Woolworths Chute Bag can be collected from the Woolworths Recovery Zone once you’ve finished the stage.
