The show calendar for 2016 is already firm including show licenses, facility reservations and show official contracts. Because of the long lead times required, it’s often difficult for HDS to make adjustments to shows and events on short notice. Still, there are some items that can be adapted fairly quickly. This month, the HDS board voted to approve two new initiatives that expand the reach of the HDS community. For the first time in many years, HDS will offer Dressage Sport Horse Breeding (DSHB) classes at the HDS Laborious I show on Saturday, Aug. 29, 2015. Horses in these classes are shown in-hand because they are too young to be under saddle. Because breeders have fewer opportunities to show and promote their young horses than in prior years, a core group of breeders worked very hard to help HDS add these classes to the Laborious I show. If successful, HDS will consider offering DSHB classes again next year. The second initiative is the addition of a Western Dressage test-of-choice championship class at the 2015 HDS Schooling Show Championships as well as a Western Dressage Schooling Show 2015 HDS Year End award. These are in response to a request from a long time schooling show manager who sees opportunity if HDS Western Dressage options are added. Western Dressage 2015 qualifying scores will be tallied retroactively from the start of the competition year. Good ideas to promote and expand the local dressage community can come from anyone. If you have a suggestion for the HDS board to consider, please contact one of the board members to bring it forward. Get ready for summer! Best Regards, Leslie Rohrer - HDS President 1

May President’s Message

Dear HDS Members,

Many of you may not be aware that HDS plans its shows and events months in advance.

Best Regards,

Leslie Rohrer - HDS President

Hassler and Arts to Present the 2015 USDF

Sport Horse Prospect Development Forum: The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) is pleased to announce the return of Scott Hassler for the 2015 USDF Sport Horse Prospect Development Forum, presented by Dressage at Devon, a USDF Education Partner. Joining Hassler will be Willy Arts, one of this county's most respected horsemen in the dressage sport horse industry. This year's event will, again, feature a live forum approach and provide a correct, fundamental system for starting sport horse prospects. The program is intended for trainers, owners, and breeders nationwide, with the goal of developing a consistent training foundation for all sport horse prospects as they progress from in-hand to under-saddle, and eventual competition. USDF Congratulates 2015 USDF/IDA National Quiz Challenge Winners - The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) would like to congratulate Amanda Arnold, overall winner of the 2015 USDF/IDA National Quiz Challenge held on April 24-26, 2015 at the Intercollegiate Dressage Association (IDA) Nationals. Amanda, a student at Averett University, scored 100 percent on both the qualifying round and the championship round in the First Level Division of the competition. She was the only student to score 100 perent in both rounds. As the grand prize winner, she will receive a four-week internship at Hilltop Farm, Inc. in Colora, MD. Amanda shared her enthusiasm for the challenge and the internship in saying, “I think the quiz challenge that IDA and

USDF have partnered to produce is an excellent way to introduce more theory into the intercollegiate competition, and the internship at Hilltop is the perfect way to support and encourage competitors in their studies on riding theory. With this internship, I hope to build upon my riding theory with practical experience and I am excited and honored to have this amazing opportunity." Read more here

USDF Launches new Youth Dressage Sport Horse Breeder/Handler Seminar - The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) is pleased to announce its partnership with Dressage at Devon to create a new sport horse seminar geared toward youth. This new seminar has been created to familiarize the younger generation with the dressage sport horse industry. The seminar will be held over two days, September 28-29 at Dressage at Devon, and will consist of classroom and practical handling sessions, along with the opportunity to observe competition classes and practice judging. Participation is limited to USDF members between the ages of fourteen and 23, with only twelve spots available. Developed by the USDF Sport Horse Committee, this program is oriented toward youth with an interest in sport horse breeding. We are so excited that Dressage at Devon has offered to help us kick off our first program this fall, to familiarize youth with the breeding and showing of dressage prospects and breeding stock,” stated Kristi Wysocki, USDF Sport Horse Committee Chair. Follow the Foal: Toschufro TT Dressage at Devon 2015 - Each year, Dressage at Devon (DAD) selects a foal to follow on its path to the Breed Show at DAD where hundreds of colts and fillies show each year. Each foal is the product of careful breeding and watchful tending as they, hopefully, grow into champions. This year, we will follow Toschufro TT (Totilas x Baba x Don Schufro), an inquisitive, leggy, bay colt with a white star, born on January 1, 2015. We look forward to seeing Toschufro and hundreds of other foals at Dressage at Devon. The breed division takes place September 29 through October 1. The performance division begins on October 1 and runs through October 4. Look for additional updates on the Dressage at Devon website (www.dressageatdevon.org) as the show draws near. Reserved seating is available online for Dressage at Devon 2015 at www.dressageatdevon.org. Box seats are in demand so, for information as to availability or for group sales, please contact Robbie Kankus at [email protected], [email protected] or 610-358-1919.

Para-Dressage, Para-Driving and the Paralympic Military Program Highlighted at Carlisle Academy’s Para-Equestrian Pipeline Training Camp May 26-30 - Para-Equestrian Dressage riders, Veterans, and Para-Drivers are looking forward to Carlisle Academy’s Para-Equestrian Pipeline Training Camp scheduled May 26-30, 2015. Carlisle Academy in Lyman, Maine, a Premier Accredited PATH Center and national leader in grassroots development for para-equestrian sports, has been the educational link for developing athletes and coaches. Carlisle along with the United States Para-Equestrian Association (USPEA) and the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) have been developing hands on workshops that address areas such as: training tips, adaptive equipment needs and type of horses needed for high performance competition. Para Pipeline Training Camp for Para-Dressage riders is May 26-30, Para-Dressage Coaches ‘Seminar & Rider Education Day is scheduled for May 27, and Introduction to Para-Driving is May 30, 2015. Carlisle Charitable Foundation, an independently governed 501(c)(3) organization and the Academy’s philanthropic partner, supports para-equestrians who participate in Carlisle’s camps and clinics. A scholarship funding request of $250 in tuition assistance can be made through the “Zoe Fund” for Para-Dressage riders. In addition, USPEA 501(c)(3) is offering tuition reimbursement grants of $250 to those that participate in the Para-Dressage Camp. Para-Drivers interested in participating will be given full tuition, through USEF Para-Driving, for the clinic on May 30. Shoofly Farm CDI3* and HDS Spring Classic I and II Dog Costume Contest: Up, Up and Away!

It would be an understatement to say that equestrians love their dogs. They are our devoted companions at home and on the road. Most are delighted to hop in the truck when the trailer is hitched up and head out to keep us company during down-time at shows. Once on the show grounds they wait patiently in aisle-ways and tack stalls while we do our thing. Well, canine attendees at the Shoofly Farm CDI3* and HDS Spring Classic got their chance to share in the fun by participating in a costume contest in keeping with the show’s theme; Up, Up and Away!. They may not have all been thrilled to dress up for our delight, but there sure were some creative and adorable costumes.
