First of all, we want to thank all of the volunteers who have worked tirelessly this season in what have been extremely hot and challenging weekends. We as a sport couldn’t do anything without those volunteers who provide marshalling and a

variety of other vital functions around the track and during a race weekend. To all the officials, category volunteers and those who work hard behind the scenes to make these events possible, we also say thank you. And of course, we should also thank the teams and the drivers – and their sponsors – who lead the charge and give us the action.

There is plenty to look forward to this BP Ultimate MotorSport NZ weekend at Manfeild. The best of our club and domestic championships, some great cars and undoubtedly there will be some great action on the track for us all to enjoy once again. The Grand Prix meeting is always a special one and we always seem to see more intense action and drama than usual. It should be fantastic again this weekend. We’re all looking forward to seeing Kenny Smith start an amazing 49th New Zealand Grand Prix too. A legend if ever there was one.

It’s been a fascinating first championship season for the Castrol Toyota Racing Series with the new Toyota FT-60 and the races have produced – as usual – some thrilling action and some passing moves worthy of the finest drivers in the world. And that is what this series is really all about – building the champions of tomorrow and preparing them in the best possible way for the season and the seasons ahead. We are the envy of the motorsport world in that regard, as our premier single seater series attracts the very best of the junior champions from around the world. The FIA see that too, and has increased the amount of Super Licence points awarded to the winner of this championship to 10, which makes it a very significant series in world motorsport.

Our champion Liam Lawson has been mighty once again this season and has excelled in a field as good as any we have ever seen in New Zealand motorsport. Hot on his heels is the king of eSports and a very handy driver in the real world, Igor Fraga. Igor is one of the best Brazilians to emerge in recent years from a country that has a rich heritage in motor racing icons. We wish him and Liam well as they bring a splendid championship to a close – may the best man win!

Toyota GAZOO Racing’s new FT-60 – the car that will take the Castrol Toyota Racing Series into its 16th season and third generation – is the most important single seater to grace the tacks of New Zealand for a considerable period of time.

TOYOTA’S NEW GLOBAL PLAYER

With 10 FIA Super Licence points on offer to the top championship runners and a specification that more than matches the

car with other global F3 regional series, the five weekend championship has been guaranteed to be on the racing radars of the world’s biggest teams and single seater racing community. That means drivers can bank points towards an F1 licence as well as gaining significant track time in preparation for other major single seater championship campaigns.

The FT-60 is a state-of-the-art racing machine that is more like a scaled down Formula 1 car than either of its two predecessors, the FT-40 and the FT-50.

Designed like the previous two series cars by Italian manufacturer Tatuus, the chassis is similar to that used in other global junior formulae, but uses a new engine that packs a powerful 280 horsepower making it one of the best performing junior cars on the FIA’s recognised pathway to Formula 1. That pathway includes four tiers of racing machinery with FIA Formula 2, the official feeder to Formula 1, sitting as the Tier 1 category on that pathway. In the ladder of performance, the Toyota Racing Series car will sit squarely in Tier 3 along with categories like the FIA Formula Regional European Championship and the Formula Renault Eurocup.

The TRS series runs the same format championship as it always has with five consecutive weekends in January and February taking in five circuits located on New Zealand’s North and South Islands. The series ends this weekend

with the New Zealand Grand Prix, one of only two events outside of the Formula 1 category officially permitted to use the phrase ‘Grand Prix’ by the world governing body of motorsport, the FIA.

The new car features all of the key recent safety initiatives developed by the FIA in conjunction with Formula 1. The design incorporates a ‘halo’ driver protection system to protect the driver from side, top and frontal impact from debris in an accident and also features the very latest in side and front impact technology in the chassis itself. Twin wheel tethers are included in the design to prevent wheels flying off in the event of a crash, another feature straight out of Formula 1.

Also all new is the Toyota motor that powers the nineteen cars racing this weekend. The engine in the car is a two litre, turbocharged, direct injection unit. It is based on the 8AR FTS engine used in both Toyota and Lexus models, but has been developed into a full race engine by the same NZ engineers that were involved in the development and maintenance of the previous 1.8L engine used for the FT-40 and FT-50.

Despite the exotic materials and processes used in the car - it features a chassis, bodywork and front and rear wing packages manufactured solely out of carbon fibre composites - the FT-60 falls within the FIA’s own cost restriction parameters with known costs for replacement parts a critical element in ensuring the category isn’t just accessible to international drivers but also to up and coming Kiwi racers.

Toyota GAZOO Racing New Zealand’s FT-60 has attracted a lot of attention and will bring full grids in 2020.

LMP2 and LMP3 endurance race driver Henning Enqvist is an intriguing addition to the 2020 Castrol Toyota Racing Series in New Zealand.

The Swedish driver is with Giles Motorsport for the 2020 TRS campaign.

This will be the 25-year-old Stockholm based driver’s first single seater campaign since competing in the four rounds 2017-2018 MRF Formula 2000 series. Henning is more widely known as an endurance driver in the LMP3 and LMP2 categories, having competed in the 2017 and 2016 V de V Endurance Series. He then went on to compete in the European Le Mans Series for 2018 and 2019.

Last year was Henning’s first LMP2 season in European Le Mans series and included his debut in the Le Mans 24 Hours, racing for ARC Bratislava in the LMP2 category.

His best performances came with French team Duquiene Engineering racing its LMP3 car in the 2017 VdeV Series. Enqvist’s first full season included wins in the 4 Hours of Paul Ricard and third place in the 4 Hours of Magny Cours.

Amazing as it sounds, veteran racer Kenny Smith starts his 49th straight New Zealand Grand Prix meeting this weekend as he continues on his

relentless march towards the big 50.

His 48 Grand Prix starts is almost certainly a record that will never be broken anyway, but as we all know, you can’t stop Kenny and he’ll be out again this weekend in a brand new FT60 with Giles Motorsport aiming to show the youngsters a thing or two about a good lap at Manfeild.

Let us not forget Ken has won this race no fewer than three times, in three very different types of car and in last year’s dramatic race, he brought his car home in the top 10. He’s been driving the old FT50 frequently this year to get his eye in for the big weekend too, as well as competing almost every weekend in Formula Open and Formula Ford.

Swiss junior formulae racer Grégoire Saucy is hoping the 2020 Castrol Toyota Racing Series will be a big start to a successful 2020.

The 19-year-old from Bassecourt joins Giles Motorsport for the championship.

The FIA recognised the growing stature of the series, increasing its Super Licence points tally to 10 for the championship winner and Saucy sees it as a great opportunity to start his 2020 campaign in the best possible way.

A busy season racing in Europe in Formula 4 in 2019 saw the 19-year-old racer compete in the ADAC Formula 4 championship in Germany, the Italian Formula 4 championship and four races of the Formula Renault Eurocup.

He drove for R-Ace GP in all three categories, placing ninth in Germany and 20th in Italy. He has been racing in junior formulae since 2016 and, like most of his competitors in the TRS series, has a strong background in karting.

Fifteen-year-old Tijmen van der Helm had to wait until the third round of the Castrol Toyota Racing Series before he was old enough to race

in New Zealand.

Van der Helm has already won in Formula 4, taking one win in the 2019 UAE Formula 4 Championship as well as three podiums and will be one of a number of racers in the 19 car field that have junior formulae race and championship wins on their resume. A dual 2019 campaign in the Spanish Formula 4 championship also produced impressive results, with the young Dutch racer taking fourth overall.

New Zealand motorsport rules meant he had to be 16 before he could race one of the new Toyota FT-60 cars. With his 16th birthday on January 26th he missed the series’ first two rounds at Highlands Motorsport Park and Teretonga. He made his debut at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park at the Denny Hulme Memorial Trophy meeting behind the wheel of a Kiwi Motorsport-run car.

Following his breakthrough championship win, Lawson was snapped up by the Red Bull Junior programme and headed to Europe to compete in both the European Formula 3 Championship and the Euroformula Open Championship for Red Bull.

Despite a challenging year - which still saw him take two podiums in his debut season in FIA Formula 3 and four wins and seven podiums in his parallel Euroformula Open campaign - 17-year-old Lawson’s circuit racing career statistics remain some of the best amongst the up and coming junior single seater drivers in the world today with 36 wins from 144 races. Nineteen-year-old Japanese hot prospect Yuki Tsunoda is a member of the Red Bull Junior Team. Tsunoda, also part of the Honda Formula

From Kangawa in the Kanto region of Japan, Tsunoda began karting in 2010, beginning with the JAF Junior Karting Championship, then moving to the regional class in 2013 and to the national class in 2014. He started circuit racing in 2016 in Japanese Formula 4 and immediately impressed, claiming his first podium with second on debut at Suzuka for the Sutekina Racing Team.

A full campaign in 2017 saw him secure fourth in the championship before his dominant 2018 season yielded eight pole positions, seven victories and the championship title. The Japanese F4 championship is regarded as one of the toughest junior formulae series to win.

Last season he competed in the FIA Formula 3 Championship and in the competitive Euroformula Open series winning a race in each category with Jenzer Motorsport and Motopark.

Brazilian young gun and Renault Sport Academy star Caio Collet is opening his 2020 racing account in TRS.

The 17-year-old from São Paulo comes to New Zealand on the back of a successful season in the 2019 Formula Renault Eurocup where he took six podiums on his way to fifth place in the championship and the Rookie title for R-Ace GP. For his Kiwi campaign Collet will join the affiliated mtec Motorsport - Engineered By R-Ace GP team.

Joining the 2020 TRS grid was an easy choice for Caio and his management team given that the series will run the same cars and tyres as the 2020 Formula Renault Eurocup in which Caio will also compete with R-Ace GP.

An impressive track record in recent seasons racing in junior formulae gave Collet the French Formula 4 Championship in 2018 with seven wins and 11 podium places, marking him as one of the best young drivers to emerge from Brazil in recent years. A dominant season saw him defeat a field that included Arthur Leclerc, the younger brother for Formula One star Charles.

Up and coming Aussie single seater racer Jackson Walls returns for a second season in New Zealand’s Castrol Toyota Racing Series.

He races with the mtec Motorsport team - recently rebranded and restructured as mtec Motorsport - Engineered By R-Ace GP - for his 2020 campaign.

Walls took part in the championship in 2019, but was forced to miss the first round due to being too young. When he joined the action from the second round at Teretonga Park he impressed with both his speed and press on style and quickly established himself as the quickest Australian in the championship, coming close to a top ten championship result.

With the New Zealand series under his belt, he ran a second season in the CAMS Australian Formula 4 Championship where he took a win. He also took part in the Asian Formula 3 Championship for the highly regarded Hitech Motorsport team, taking two podiums in the competitive series.

He has a win to his credit with victory at Pukekohe last weekend.

It’s game on in the final round of the 2020 Castrol Toyota Racing series this weekend at the Grand Prix and as in previous years, the race for the title is almost certainly going to come down to the big race itself.

ALL TO PLAY FOR IN NEW ZEALAND’S GRAND PRIX

Two have shone in this year’s series - a Kiwi and a Brazilian and both have bright futures ahead of them in international motorsport.

Kiwi Liam Lawson - the reigning champion - and Brazil’s Igor Fraga are the two protagonists fighting for the title. Lawson is a Red Bull Junior who is well known to Kiwi motorsport fans. Fraga is a racer who also has a huge following in the on-line world of eSports racing, where he is the world’s best at the iconic Gran Turismo experience. Both are also destined to compete in the European Formula 3 championship after the Toyota series concludes.

It was Lawson who stole the early initiative with wins at Highlands Motorsport and Teretonga but Fraga was right behind him and then won at a dramatic Hampton Downs weekend a fortnight ago. Last weekend at Pukekohe Park, Lawson won the first race on Saturday and then dominated the feature race. Fraga was spun out by a rival and had to race back through the field to limit the damage to his points tally for the weekend. Nevertheless, Lawson heads into this weekend with an eight point advantage in the championship table.

It’s going to be a stunning weekend. And it’s all to play

for if you’re a championship contender or one of the gun drivers competing in the Grand Prix this weekend.

These young drivers in this category are the best up and coming racers of their age in the world right now and more than one could make it all the way to Formula One. Nowhere else in the world has a championship that brings together the best of the junior formulae champions each year. This time around the series has multiple champions from karting, Formula Ford and Formula 4 as well as junior

representation from several Formula 1 teams.

There are some genuine global talents in the TRS field this year. Aside from Fraga and Lawson, sixteen year old sensation Franco Colapinto is an Argentinian racer with no less than two time world champion Fernando Alonso in his corner. Caio Collet is a Renault Junior and was one of the favourites for this year’s title but he has endured some bad luck and had an awful Pukekohe weekend. He’ll be looking to go out on a high as will the popular Aussie racer Jackson Walls who took his first major single seater race win last weekend at Pukekohe on Sunday morning. Watch out too for Grégoire Saucy, Red Bull Junior Yuki Tsunoda and Petr Ptacek. All three are fast and brave and definitely have something to prove this weekend as the championship winds up.

Nineteen cars will take place in this weekend’s big season climax. That’s one more than the earlier rounds and that’s because evergreen Kiwi legend Kenny Smith is back - yet again - aiming to start and finish his 49th New Zealand Grand Prix. Competing in a country’s premier race for

so long, and in an unbroken run, is a feat unprecedented at any level of any racing code in the world and Kenny is determined to make it 50 and move the on-going record into the realms of unbeatable. The fact that it probably is already is immaterial - this is a pure bred racer who loves to compete and is still - still - very strong in a single seater racing car and quite capable of holding his own.

Liam Lawson leads the series but not by much.

Igor Fraga, cool, calm, composed

and quick.

Pukekohe’s Paul Manuell extended his lead in this season’s RYCO 24•7 V8 Utes Championship after a strong performance at the second round at Hampton Downs that included two pole positions, two wins and a fourth place finish. And he heads into this weekend’s Grand Prix meeting very much as the man to beat in this season’s four round championship.

EVERGREEN MANUELL OUT FRONT

Manuell has a lead over Glen Collinson in the championship of 22 points at the halfway point of the championship season. In his 28th season of

racing Manuell was the dominant force from the opening laps of qualifying on Saturday morning at the last round, quickly asserting himself with a pole position lap that was close to the V8 ute record at Hampton Downs. He backed that up with a comfortable win in the afternoon’s race heading home Andrew Porter in his Ford Falcon FG and 2019 champion Matt Spratt and Collinson for the win in what were blisteringly hot conditions at the North Waikato track.

Collinson has won a race at each of the first two rounds and is unbeaten this season in the Sunday morning reverse top ten race. A mistake in the first race at Hampton Downs where he stalled cost him points, but he’s still right there and one bad result for Manuell will benefit the Hamilton racer significantly. Andrew Porter, in a Ford Falcon FG for this season, is also in with a shot and will likely win soon given his ever increasing pace in his new car. A win or wins this weekend is not out of the question.

Watch out this weekend for the spectacular Peter Ward in his Holden. Long-time racer Brett Rudd is back having missed Hampton Downs and Manfeild will also see the return of Geoff Spencer, who like Ward has been a V8 ute racer since the category began. Liam Porter is one to watch. He bagged two eighth places and a sixth in his Ford Falcon BF to win the Hard Charger Award at Hampton Downs while Brent Main had one of his best weekends of V8 ute racing with an 11th, a 10th and an eighth place to bounce back from a first round engine failure.

Rookie Roger Nees also excelled, grabbing 10th in the second race to secure his first top ten result in the category after a fine drive. Champion Spratt is unavailable for this round and his seat will be filled by ute owner Jake Stoneman.

14 MANFEILD 15 - 16 FEB 2020 | speedworksevents.co.nz 14

After three rounds of the 2019-2020 Championship - and some of the tightest and most competitive racing the category has ever seen - the Best Bars Toyota 86 Championship arrives this weekend in Manfeild at a key moment in the championship.

THREE WAY BATTLE RAGES ON

With two rounds to go, the championship is shaping into a three way battle. One driver from Australia and two drivers from

New Zealand are in the title hunt.

Jaylyn Robotham in his Eastern Automotive supported 86 has been one of the season’s sensations. Sixth in his home country’s equivalent championship last season, and the winner of the Asian TA2 championship for big V8 racers, Robotham looks every inch a future prospect for V8 Supercars. He won in the NZ championship first time out at Pukekohe Park, got himself into the mix at the technically challenging Highlands Motorsport Park and was the round winner again at Teretonga Park last month.

As a result he has a six point lead over principal Kiwi rival Peter Vodanovich in the championship table, and a 23 point buffer over the other Kiwi in the title race, Jaden Ransley.

Vodanovich has been simply sensational this season so far. A late deal with NEXEN DTM secured his entry in the championship and he has made the most of the opportunity. He got his championship off to a solid start at Pukekohe, but was almost invincible at Highlands, winning two of the three races over the weekend and only losing the

last one after a last gasp move by Miles Toyota’s Ransley saw him sneak by for the win.

Opportunity has been Ransley’s big friend this season, and combining that with consistent speed at every round he’s been one of the key players. The 23 point deficit to Robotham is close, but even that margin is probably unreflective of just how good Ransley has been.

In short, any of the three could take the title and it’s really too close to call as they move to this weekend’s Grand Prix meeting. One thing is for certain, however. A retirement for any of them or all of them during the weekend could open the door to the pack behind in what has been a fiercely competitive field.

In fourth, fifth and sixth place in the championship – Campbell Stewart in his Total Oil car, Connor Adam in his Post Haste machine and Brock Gilchrist in his NEXUS Logistics car have had contrasting seasons.

Stewart is another to have turned heads this season. By the third round he had joined the trio of front runners as a pace setter and this form is likely to continue this weekend. Adam and Gilchrist have had their moments too and could

The battle between Jaylyn Robotham, Peter Vodanovich and Jaden Ransley will rage on this weekend.

be considered solid prospects for podiums and a good bet for a race win at some point during the Grand Prix weekend.

Just behind those three in the championship chase is Justin Allen, the familiar Battery Town supported driver a Manfeild specialist and enjoying a solid second season in the category. He’s also a wet weather specialist. If the stars align for him this weekend, he could be a contender for a first win in the category. One thing’s for sure, he’ll definitely be towards the front of the action.

The Best Bars Toyota 86 Championship racers have four sessions on track over Saturday and Sunday. There’s qualifying and one race on Saturday and two further races on Sunday, with the final race a little longer than the first two.

Local racer Justin Allen will have the fans on his side as he goes for a first Toyota 86 win.

Consistency has been key for Jaden Ransley

so far this season.

Some of Porsches finest and most iconic racing machines will be in action over this weekend at Manfeild and what the Pirelli Porsche Championship field lacks in quantity is more than compensated for with quality.

PIRELLI PORSCHES BATTLE ON

A collection 997 GT3 machines, three 996 GT3s, five 944S2s and a single Cayman GT4 car make up the field, with Cam McCormack heading the pack in the points

as they enter this, the second round of the championship in his Porsche 996 GT3 racer. The field remains a diverse window on Porsche’s racing history. The 996 GT3 and 997 GT3 racers are part of the long line of GT3 racers.

The GT3 has had a successful racing career in the one-make national and regional Porsche Carrera Cup and GT3 Cup Challenge series, as well as the international Porsche Supercup supporting the FIA Formula 1 World Championship. It has won championship and endurance races, including the GT class of the American Le Mans Series seven times, first overall in the 24 Hours of Daytona, and first overall at the 24 Hours Nürburgring six times. The cars racing at Manfeild are Cup specification cars, but the DNA remains the same as the illustrious GT3 counterparts.

The 944 S2s are based on the front-engined, rear-wheel drive mid-level model while the Cayman GT4 is one of the latest racing Porsches.

The BNT V8s line-up again this weekend for the third round of their Championship at Manfeild.

BNT V8S LINE-UP FOR MANFEILD

Last weekend at Pukekohe saw Australian-based, Kiwi Supercar driver Andre Heimgartner retain the championship lead with three class wins across the

weekend. Starring over the weekend was Australian driver Alexandra Whitley, who claimed three second place finishes across the weekend’s three races in just her second round aboard the Richards Team Motorsport Toyota Camry.

“I worked a lot with my engineer this weekend to make sure we came out firing,” she explained. “It was great to be rubbing shoulders with Andre and we even managed to beat him off the line in that final race. It was also great to get three podiums for the team, and even better for me to improve every time I got in the car.”

The unrestricted BNT V8s Open class was won by Sam Collins of Cambridge, who took his wild Ford Mustang to three race victories over the weekend, ahead of the Holdens of Eric Hennephof and Blair McDonald. Fans will love the Mustang this weekend – it’s a car you cannot fail to hear or enjoy listening to.

Also lining up on the grid this weekend will be Heimgartner’s teammate, Lance Hughes in the second Hamilton Motorsports entry. Sixteen-year-old south island racer, Brayden Phillips lines up in his Ford Falcon SuperTourer and will be on double duty this weekend racing in the Best Bars Toyota 86 Championship round too. The youngster is quickly getting to grips with his V8 powered machine – an ex-Craig Baird car - and he might just spring a surprise or two at Manfeild. Brad Lathrope returns in his Ford Falcon SuperTourer for what is his third season in Class One of the Championship. Tauranga’s Rob Wallace will also line up in his ex-Greg Murphy Holden Commodore SuperTourer.

Having had a terrible start to his Championship campaign,

lying at the bottom of the points table former champion Nick Ross will be looking to bounce back this weekend aboard his Nissan Altima. Ross struck trouble at Round One, and at Round Two suffered overheating issues with his Nissan Altima, failing to make the start for races two and three. The BNT V8s Open class is headlined by Collins and he will be joined by the Holden Commodores for Hennephof and McDonald. Also look for the BNT V8 Lites Championship contenders Shane Whitley, Justin McIlroy, Nigel Karl, Tony Rutherford and Ted Jarvis.

The BNT V8s will have three races over the weekend.

The TradeZone GT1/GT2 series is set for another weekend of racing some of the country’s fastest machinery at Manfeild. This weekend marks round three of four for the series’ 2019/2020 season.

RELEASE THE BEASTS!

In the opening round of the season at Pukekohe Park in December, it was a mixed affair with three different winners from three races. Cameron Jones and his

home-built machine pipped John De Veth and his Daytona Prototype spec racer in the opening race of the season. Brian Gray took the win over the usual favourites in race two whilst Nigel Snow won race three.

A fortnight ago at Hampton Downs, De Veth took the opening two races of the weekend. Despite starting well down the order due to the handicap in the second race, once De Veth got the lead on lap nine of ten, he never looked back and backed up his earlier win with another show of strength. De Veth wasn’t able to make it three-from-three though as Struan Robertson won the final reverse handicap race convincingly in his GT3 Porsche.

It’s no surprise that De Veth is the highest placed GT1/GT2 car in the overall standings in second with Hans Ruiterman just two points behind him in third overall. Cam Jones and his popular homebuilt weapon sits just 41-points adrift of Ruiterman.

The GTRNZ series features four different classes spread across two different grids. The basic philosophy of the class is to provide everyone with an opportunity to race within their budget and skill set. The GT1/GT2 grid will see some

of New Zealand’s fastest machinery take to the track with the GT1 class having no limit on lap speed. Whilst those in the GT2 class will see cars capable of setting lap times no faster than 1:10.000s around Manfeild Circuit Chris Amon.

TRADEZONE

De Veth will be hard to beat but there’s plenty of opportunity over the weekend for others to win.

The TradeZone GT3/GT4 series is set for another weekend of racing some of New Zealand’s best homebuilt racing cars. The third round of the four-round series takes place at Manfeild this weekend as part of the biggest event of the year, for the category!

FUN, FAST AND FURIOUS

In the opening round of the season at Pukekohe Park in December, it was Logan Childs who struck first, taking the opening race despite encountering a mechanical issue

which caused him to slow dramatically at the end of the race. Nigel Karl took his new car to victory in the second GT3/GT4 race of the weekend. Brian Hamilton then took out the reverse handicap race three, holding off a last-lap surge from Karl which culminated in a close finish.

Round two, held a fortnight ago at Hampton Downs, again threw three different winners. Nick Jones took the opening race of the weekend with Hayden Gare and Richard Wagstaff not far behind him.

In the second race, it was Dallas Green who reigned supreme, taking a victory in the handicap race. Drew Jeffrey took out the final race of the weekend where the hot battle was for second place between Nick Jones, Ken Hunter and Anthony van den Berg.

Heading into the penultimate round it’s Brian Hamilton in the GT4 class who leads the overall GTRNZ points table. The closest rival from the GT3/GT4 field is Robin Greenland who sits sixth overall, just under 100-points behind.

The GTRNZ series features four different classes spread across two different grids. The basic philosophy of the class is to provide everyone with an opportunity to race within their budget and skill set. The GT3/GT4 grid will see some of New Zealand’s best homebuilt cars take to the track with the GT3 class having to set laps no faster than a 1:15.000s. Whilst those in the GT4 class will see cars capable of setting lap times no faster than 1:18.000s around Manfeild Circuit Chris Amon.

It’s the fourth round of the NEXEN Tyre Mazda Racing Series this weekend at the Grand Prix meeting, and one of the country’s biggest and fastest one make series is back in action and ready to thrill.

CLOSE AT THE FRONT IN MAZDA RACING

Keith Wilkinson sits out front on the points in the huge RX8 Cup class but he’s far from having a comfortable lead with Matt Horne sitting in second

position just 24 points behind. Thomas Hannaford is just three points behind him and has David Atkins just one good result away from him. So it’s all to play for in the screaming RX8s this weekend. Expect a field of 20 plus though it will be touch and go if Simon Baker makes it to the race weekend after a spectacular crash at Hampton Downs at the last round.

As well as being the fourth round of the NEXEN Tyre Mazda Racing Series, the Manfeild weekend also doubles up as the second round of the annual national championship organised by the country’s top racing Mazda enthusiasts. It’s a simple format with one round on the South Island and one round on the North Island. And it means fans get to a rare chance to see the best of the racers from the other side of the Cooke Strait. Wilkinson leads the way on points in this one too, and is the reigning champion.

There should be a mixture of RX7 racers and MX5s in the field as well this weekend. There’s a three way tie for the lead in the RX7s and Mark Smith currently heads the MX5 points table.

There’s nothing to choose at the top of the RX8 points table, so expect some fine racing

The penultimate chapter for the ENZED Central Muscle Cars 2019-2020 season is both unpredictable and unmissable. Early on it looked as if there would be two cars running away with the Group 1 and Group 2 titles but those suggestions were thrown out the window as round after round produced highs and lows for the entire field.

MUSCLE CAR MONSTERS SET TO ADD DRAMA

The teams and drivers return to Manfeild Circuit Chris Amon for a second time in this calendar season. And after a two-stop adventure in the South

Island it is Dean Hansen who leads Group 1 and Shane Holland who is back on top in Group 2.

While points are always changing as a season unfolds it is the dramatic turnarounds which have peaked people’s interest this season. Most surprising is Angus Fogg dropping to third with five-time Champion Dean Perkins putting himself back in contention and slotting himself into second on the points table. Both Fogg and Perkins have been on a rollercoaster ride while Hansen in the #81 yellow Monaro has remained consistent. And it’s consistency that wins championships.

If Hansen is able to continue on his path and others make mistakes or have problems around him he is in with a very good chance of increasing his current lead of 76 points. In the CMC category, however, it is never that easy, given that two of their four races are reverse grid handicaps and the club also has a strict 50 point penalty rule for any on-track infractions. That simply means that you must not only be fast, but you also have to be smart.

It will be a slightly different matter in Group 2, with Shane Holland looking to simply cement his strong position at the top of the table.

It should also be noted that Perkins took three of the four wins at their last Manfeild outing – and he will be looking to repeat that performance.
