It was created by Dr Genichi Taguchi, a production engineerwho made a lot of research on various classical experimentmethods. He translated his quality philosophy in TM. Amonghis un ique contr ibut ions to the qual i ty soc iety areTaguchi design matrix, robust designs, and loss function.

Doing experiments under ‘noisy’ conditionsThe Taguchi method involves reducing the variation in a processthrough robust design of experiments. Most experiments methodsare performed in ‘controlled’ condition – in Taguchi’s robust designshowever, the usual noises that appear in real operations are simulated during the experiments.Incorporating noises in the experiments has been proven to havemade the experiment finding stronger. The impact of big variationfor incorporating noises is managed by using S/N % method (instead of partitioning Y hat & S hat).

Design Model that works in ‘real-world’ conditions.Taguchi robust design model is created under ‘noisy’ conditions,hence it makes the model validation easier in real process conditionswhere noises are naturally present.

Loss Function as the determinant in optimization process.Quality is best achieved by minimizing the deviation from a target, instead of just being well within spec limits. Instead of being purely operational, Mr Taguchi links operational loss tosystem loss – a more business driven consideration.

AZMAN BIN HUSSAINreceived his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from theUniversity of South Alabama, USA. He had his Six Sigma Black Belt from Sony Corporation,Japan; and his Green Belt from Air Academy, USA.. Azman is currently attached with a few companies as a senior consultant.

He was attached previously with Prima Strategies. Prima Strategiesdoes a lot of work for Proton and its suppliers. He is a certifiedLean Sigma trainer for Rolls Royce – a giant company that producesaero-plane and marine engines. He also works with General Physicsand OMNEX – a training and consulting company based in the UnitedStates on project basis; where he serves Rolls Royce and New Balance.Besides that Azman was also involved in Lean Implementation project withHenkel (German comp) and Aalborg Portland (Italian comp), Kuching Specialist Hospital, and Universiti Putra Malaysia.
