Indias Foreign Trade: February, 2009
A. EXPORTS (including reA. EXPORTS (including re--exportsexports) Exports during February, 2008-09 werevalued at US $ 11913 million which was 21.7% lower than the level of US $ 15221 millionduring February, 2008.
In rupee terms, exports touched Rs. 58685crores, which was 3% lower than the value ofexports during February, 2007-08.
Cumulative value of exports for the period
April- February, 2008-09 was US$ 156597million (Rs.705231 crore) as against US$145878 million (Rs. 586233) registering agrowth of 7.3% in Dollar terms & 20.3% inRupee terms over the same period last year.

B. IMPORTSB. IMPORTS Imports during February, 2008-09 were
valued at US $ 16823 million representing adecrease of 23.3% over the level of importsvalued at US $ 21934 million in February,
2007-08. In Rupee terms, imports decreased by 4.9%. Cumulative value of imports for the period
April- February, 2008-09 was US$ 271687
million (Rs. 1223213 crores) as against US$228081 million (Rs. 917179 crores)registering a growth of 19.1% in Dollar termsand 33.4% in Rupee terms over the sameperiod last year.

C. CRUDE OIL AND NON-OIL IMPORTS:
Oil imports during February, 2008-09 were valued at US $4047 million which was 47.5 % lower than oil imports valuedat US $ 7713 million in the corresponding period last year.
Oil imports during April- February, 2008-09 were valued at
US$ 89684 million which was 26.8 % higher than the oilimports of US$ 70704 million in the corresponding period lastyear.
Non-oil imports during February, 2008-09 were estimated at
US $ 12776 million which was 10.2 % lower than non-oilimports of US$ 14222 million in February, 2007-08.
Non-oil imports during April- February, 2009 were valued atUS$ 182003 million which was 15.6 % higher than the level ofsuch imports valued at US$ 157376 million in April- February,2007-08.

Industry at a Glance The Indian leather Industry occupies a place of prominence in
the Indian economy in view of its substantial export earnings,employment generation and growth.
There has been increasing emphasis on its planneddevelopment, aimed at optimum utilization of available rawmaterial for maximizing the returns particularly from exports.
The export of leather and leather products increased manifoldover the past decades. The export increased from Rs. 290 mnin 1956-57 and from Rs. 30760 mn in 1991-92 to Rs.140007.33 mn in 2007-08.
Today the industry ranks 8th in the export trade in terms offoreign exchange earnings of the country.
India accounts for a share of 2.62% in the global leather tradeduring 2006. With the exclusion of non-leather footwear, thisis slightly higher at 3.41%.
