Mr Tran will take Long Service Leave for Term 3 and Mrs Stafford will also be taking some leave next term. We wish them well during their time away from duties. We farewell and thank staff leaving, our French Language Assistant, Ms Marschall and Mr Roscioli who conclude their time with us. As the holidays approach I take this opportunity of thanking all who have contributed to what can only be described as an extraordinary term. 1426 Friday 26 June 2020 Dear Members of the Loyola College Community,

The last few weeks have been busy with assessments in preparation of Semester 1 Reports. I am pleased to report that students have been working hard to ensure the best possible results. Our general focus has been on settling students back into their daily routines and bringing back some sense of normality to school life which is being achieved.

Winter Sleepout Congratulations to the students who participated in this year’s event from home on the evening of Thursday 18 June. By all accounts it

was a great success in terms of both fundraising for the needy and student participation. I thank Mr Lynch, Deputy Principal Ignatian Mission & Identity and his Ministry team for organising and promoting this event.

End of Term Assembly and Events in Term 3 This Assembly took place in virtual form and focussed on events coming up next term as the COVID restrictions are relaxed. We are all looking forward to being able to participate or view events albeit not necessarily in ways in which we have been accustomed. We will be holding House Eisteddfod without an audience, St Ignatius Day will spread over two different days during the term, ACS Sport will be back as will ACS Cross Country. Families will be notified of other College events when restriction ease further.

Masterplan Stage 2: Community Precinct The builders are making great progress with the project and anticipate a finishing date in early September. We have been very pleased with the progress and quality of work to date and look forward to having the facility handed over before the end of next term.

Staffing Matters We wish Mrs Salamon and Mrs Curcio all the best as they commence Maternity leave.

I thank students, their families and our College staff for their incredible support during the last 3 months of COVID.

I wish all who are able to take a break, a happy and safe holiday period. I look forward to welcoming back students and staff to Founders term in July.

First Aid News: Parents/Guardians are asked to check student medical plans (such as asthma care plan or anaphylaxis plan) to ensure that they are up to date and completed by a Medical Practitioner. Plans should be forwarded to the First Aid Department and uploaded on Consent2Go.

Parents are reminded that students with anaphylaxis/asthma are required to bring their EpiPen and Asthma medication with them to school each day. This medication must be carried on their person during the school day.

FROM DIRECTOR OF COLLEGE & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Parking in Bungay Street A few reminders to parents and guidelines when using Bungay Street during pick up and drop off times. Please be courteous to our neighbours by not blocking driveways Adhere to all parking restrictions Drive to the speed limit, which is 40kms Allow students to cross at the children’s crossing Turn off your engines while waiting to pick up your child.

Drop Off Zone - Grimshaw Street When using the Grimshaw Street drop off zone, parents are asked to drive right into the College, not stop in the driveway or by the round-about and drive straight through to the drop off area. Parents who stop in the driveway, block the flow of traffic and this leads to a safety concern as cars queue onto Grimshaw Street. In addition, we ask that parents be courteous to our property team as they direct traffic to ensure efficient movement of cars in and out of the College.

Parent Communications Survey Many thanks to those parents that completed the Parent Communications Survey. We had an amazing response and your feedback is extremely valuable as we continue to improve how we communicate with our community.

Congratulations to David Vidos who won the $50 gift voucher for completing the survey.

FROM DEPUTY PRINCIPAL IGNATIAN MISSION & IDENTITY

Loyola Winter Sleep Out at Home COVID-19 forced us to take a different approach to raising awareness about homelessness in Melbourne. On the Thursday 18 June students, staff and family members were invited to participate in the first ever Loyola Vinnies Winter Sleep Out at Home.

People were asked to sleep at home but not in their beds. There was a great response. People slept on couches, floors, on decks and under verandas, in garages, and backyard tents.

The Loyola Vinnies are very grateful to everyone who supported this event by either sleeping or donating. We set the initial fundraising target at $250.00, anticipating around 50 students registering at $5.00 each. The fundraising tally was over $1,200. We don’t know how many actually participated as some families made bulk donations and some individuals donated more than the suggested $5.00 registration fee. However, we estimate that we had well over 100 actual sleepers and the event certainly met it’s aims which were threefold: involve students from all levels and families, raise awareness of the issue and funds that can help address it.

We hope to run a school-based sleepout next term for the senior students if COVID-19 restrictions allow it.

Loyola Vinnies Sleepout@Home people slept on couches, floors, in tents and play house.

FROM DEPUTY PRINCIPAL TEACHING AND LEARNING

Application for accelerated subjects in 2021 In Term Three our Year 9 and 10 students will be considering their subjects for next year. There has been a change in the application process for students who seek to do an accelerated subject in the following year.

Current Year 9 students A number of you will consider taking on a Unit 1 and 2 Subject (Year 11 subject) in 2021. Acceleration requires demonstrated consistent high academic achievement and an ability to take on the demands of an accelerated subject. Therefore, a student will need to be committed to their studies, well organised and can meet deadlines. English will be one of the subjects that the student needs to demonstrate a consistent high level of academic ability. Semester Two reports will be checked for maintenance of consistency in academic effort.

An invitational letter, from myself, will be sent out to our top students and their families explaining the process for acceleration and applications will be completed online.

Current Year 10 students An invitational letter, from the relevant Head of Learning, will be sent out to students currently studying a Unit 1/2 subject. Acceptance for Unit 3/4 is not automatic. Letters will be sent to students who have been able to sustain a high level of academic ability and meet the demands of the accelerated Units 1/2. Students will need to re-apply for acceleration and depending on results acceleration may or may not be able to continue.

The subject selection process takes place in early Term Three for all of our students and once again students will be asked to complete their subject choices online, with your guidance. All current Year 9, 10 and 11 students will meet with a senior member of staff to discuss their choices.

Immediate S for Units 1- 4 SAC’s Students will receive an immediate S for a SAC when they have demonstrated the following: Produce work that demonstrates achievement of the outcomes Submit work that is clearly their own Observe the rules of the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) and the school. (School rules may include for example, Attendance or Submission of Work policies)

If any or all of these are not satisfied at the time of the SAC/SAT a student can be awarded a ‘Provisional N’.

Students can always redeem an S for the SAC/SAT in various ways. To be awarded an S, students will need to consult with their Subject Teacher about the best way to proceed.

Letters of Concern As part of our commitment to your child’s learning, we have a process of informing parents/guardians if a student does not meet the following requirements: Frequent absences Failure to complete work, including homework Achieved a grade of D (54%) or below Failure to engage meaningfully in class work Failure to show work in progress Concern about the authenticity of the work Redemption of work Years 7 - 10

Parents/Guardians are still asked to contact the Subject Teacher, after the Letter of Concern is sent, either by email or phone to discuss the issue. This is another example of where we can work together with your child to provide every opportunity to succeed.

FROM ICT MANAGER

ICT News: Cybersafety Part 7: Illegal Downloading Few can resist the lure of a bargain, especially when it is free. But when it comes to the Internet, few things are genuinely free, especially when it comes to highly sort after products such as music, videos and computer games.

Unless the product has a price tag, there is a good chance it is illegal. If it is illegal, that makes the downloading of that product an act of ‘Internet Piracy!’ People may think they are saving money, or perhaps they are too impatient to wait for the official release, but it is still breaking the Law when content is downloaded illegally.

Cybercriminals try to bait bargain hunters or impatient, enthusiastic users by setting up illegal download sites on which sort after products are deliberately infected with trojans which, once downloaded on a person’s computer, are designed to find passwords, email addresses and bank account details, then copy and send them back to the cybercriminals, to then be traded on the Dark Web.

Music companies themselves may even supply deliberately virus infected MP3 files in order to dissuade would-be pirates and force them to buy legitimate products, instead.

The bottom line is: if it’s free, it most probably is not safe to download. The old adage holds true: “You get what you ‘pay’ for”, and when it’s free content from the Internet, you may indeed “get ‘a lot more’ than what you bargained for”.

So be cybersafe: pay for a legal copy and protect your privacy; do not succumb to the lure of piracy!

FROM WELLBEING & PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR

Happiness is a term that captures a huge variety of positive emotions such as humour, serenity, optimism, joy, pride, inspiration, love and hope. Happiness means different things, to different people and is essential to your understanding of emotional literacy. Throughout history, philosophers, religious writers and poets have pondered on the meaning of happiness and how it might be achieved. In the last few decades, scientists and psychologists have researched this further by studying a field of science called positive psychology.

The result of this research suggests there is a strong correlation between gratitude and greater happiness. Practising gratitude helps you shift your focus to positive memories or experiences, noticing the good in your life. Over time, this will re-wire your brain to create new neural pathways, increasing your state of happiness and overall wellbeing.

At Loyola we have introduced Gratitude & Hope Journals. Thursday morning during mentor every student in the school reflects and writes about what they are grateful for and what they are hopeful for.

This week’s edition of SchoolTV, parents and caregivers will learn how to achieve happiness and the benefits of practising gratitude. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month’s edition, and we always welcome your feedback.

If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.
