OU CONTINUES RUN IN NATIONAL POLLS

OAfter going 3-2 last weekend, OU slipped fi ve spots in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Coaches Poll from No. 9 to No. 14. In the USA ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25, Oklahoma dropped two spots from 8th to a tie for 10th with Arizona.

Oklahoma is the only program to be ranked every week of the NFCA poll, 307 straight polls.

Oklahoma’s No. 9 spot in the NFCA Preseason Poll signifi ed the sixth straight season that the Sooners started ranked in the NFCA’s Top 10. That’s the second longest active streak in the country behind Alabama (11).

The 2016 season marks the 22nd season of the NFCA poll, which began in 1995. In that time, OU has been ranked in the preseason Top 10 on 16 occasions; only Arizona (18) and UCLA (17) have appeared more times. OU’s average NFCA preseason ranking is 8.3.

OU moved up one spot from its ranking in the fi nal 2015 USA Softball Poll to come in at No. 8 with 352 points to start 2016. It’s the ninth straight season, and 12th time in the 14-year history of the poll, that it has begun in the Top 10. The Sooners’ average USA Softball preseason ranking is 6.6.

TOUGH SCHEDULE FOR SOONERS IN 2016

Fifteen opponents that reached the 2015 NCAA Softball Tournament, including half of the fi eld from the Women’s College World Series, highlight Oklahoma’s 2016 schedule.

Oklahoma’s 2016 schedule features six teams ranked in the preseason polls, including four in the top 10.

After opening the season against No. 14/13 (NFCA/USA) Minnesota and No. 20/19 Washington on Feb. 12, the Sooners are still scheduled to face No. 2/2 Michigan, No. 5/5 Alabama, No. 7/7 UCLA, No. 8/9 Tennessee and RV/23 Utah throughout the year, as well as a second matchup with the Golden Gophers on March 16.

In addition, future opponents Nebraska and Fresno State were also receiving votes in each poll.

Within the Big 12, Baylor opened at No. 16/16, while Texas and Kansas received votes in both polls.

SOONERS PLACED ATOP BIG 12 PRESEASON POLL AGAIN

For the fourth year in a row and the seventh time in the last eight years, the Oklahoma softball team has topped the Big 12 Preseason Poll. The Sooners got fi ve of the seven fi rst-place votes. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team.

The Sooners led Big 12 teams with 35 points, while Baylor received the other two fi rst-place votes and ranked second with 32 points. Texas was slotted third by the coaches with 26 points, followed by Kansas (20), Oklahoma State (14), Texas Tech (13) and Iowa State (7).

MILLER, PARKER NAMED TO TOP 50 WATCH LIST

Senior outfi elder Erin Miller and sophomore pitcher Paige Parker were each named to the Top 50 Watch List for the 2016 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award.

Oklahoma is one of 12 schools, and the only Big 12 representative, to have at least two student-athletes on the list. Georgia, LSU and Michigan led all schools with three selections. Miller and Parker are looking to become the second player in OU history to win the award as former Sooner Keilani Ricketts was a two-time winner in 2012 and 2013.

The Top 25 Finalists for the 2016 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award will be announced April 13. An athlete does not have to be on the “Watch List” to be considered for the Top 25, but the eventual USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will come from the Top 25 Finalists.

The Top 10 Finalists will be announced May 11 and the Top 3 announced May 25. The 2015 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will be revealed May 31.

OU TO RELY ON LARGEST FRESHMAN CLASS IN 28 YEARS

With the graduation of one of the best senior classes in program history, OU will look to one of its largest freshman classes ever to make up that lost production.

Featuring eight freshman, the 2016 class is the largest ever under Patty Gasso and the largest for the program since nine were on the 1988 squad. For reference, the oldest member of this year’s freshmen was born in 1996.

Fale Aviu is the favorite to be the starting right fi elder, while Sydney Romero is penciled in at third base. Caleigh Clifton and Shay Knighten are also dueling for the starting spot at second base. In addition, pitchers Jayden Chestnut and Brittany Finney fi gure to see time in the circle, while outfi elders Kylie Lundberg and Raegan Rogers will provide depth in their debut seasons.

RADIO COVERAGE MORE EXTENSIVE THAN EVER

The softball schedule features the most extensive coverage in program history with all 54 games to air on KEBC 1560 in Norman. Radio broadcasts will also be available to be streamed on the respective websites of each station as well as the TuneIn radio app available on mobile devices.

This year Chris Plank moves from his spot as dugout reporter on baseball broadcasts to the booth as the play-by-play voice on softball games. Plank, the sideline reporter on OU football broadcasts, joined Sooner Sports Properties full time in the fall of 2015.

19 GAMES TO BE TELEVISED IN 2016

Oklahoma softball team is scheduled to have 19 of its games aired on TV during the 2016 season. Of those 19 games, 16 are scheduled to appear on Sooner Sports TV, while OU is set to appear twice on ESPN2 and once on FSN.

The FSN game is set for April 3 against Kansas and the ESPN2 games are scheduled for April 10 at Baylor and April 16 at home against Texas.

All other OU home games are scheduled to be streamed online at SoonerSports.TV.

ROMERO CHOSEN FOR USA ELITE TEAM

Freshman infi elder Sydney Romero has been selected for the USA Softball Women’s Elite Team. She was one of 18 chosen for the roster after the four-day Women’s National Team Selection Camp in Irvine, Calif.

The Elite Team will participate in a series of exhibition games against the Women’s National Team, in addition to the World Cup of Softball XI. It will also participate in exhibition games at the USA Softball JO Cup in Marietta, Ga. Dates for exhibition games have not yet been released.

OU FIRST TEAM TO WIN FOUR STRAIGHT BIG 12 TITLES

Oklahoma claimed the Big 12 Championship for an unprecedented fourth year in a row in 2015. In 2014, OU became the fi rst team to win three straight Big 12 titles. SOONERS SIGN CLASS OF FIVE IN 2016

Five student-athletes signed National Letters of Intent to join the Oklahoma softball program in the fall of 2016: infi elder Alissa Dalton (Cypress, Texas), pitcher Mariah Lopez (Saugus, Calif.), utility player Nicole Mendes (Houston, Texas), pitcher Melanie Olmos (Riverside, Calif.) and outfi elder VanessaTaukeiaho (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.).

“The class as a whole is very athletic and it’s a class that knows how to win,” Patty Gasso said. “I’ve watched them win championship games and that’s exciting for me because anytime an athlete can play for the ultimate prize they gain something over other athletes through experience and han-dling pressure situations.

“I feel like I’ve seen these athletes in those types of set-tings so that’s exciting. On top of that, this class is athletic, which means to me that they’re strong, powerful, quick, and they have all have been taught very well by some very good coaches.”

Now in her 22nd season at the University of Oklahoma, head coach Patty Gasso has molded the OU softball program into a na-tional power and permanently placed herself among the elite college softball coaches in the country as evident by the selection

to the 2012 NFCA Hall of Fame class.

The Sooners have reached the postseason in each one of her 21 seasons, and in the process, advanced to the Women’s College World Series nine times. The WCWS run began in 2000 when her team won the NCAA National Championship in OU’s fi rst appearance and continued through the 2013 campaign when the team won its second national championship, becoming just the fi fth program to win multiple national titles.

With 25 seasons as a head coach to her name, Gasso has a career collegiate coaching record of 1192-366-3 (.765) and holds an overall record of 1031-307-2 (.770) at the University of Oklahoma. Needing only 1,300 games to get there, Gasso became the second fastest to reach 1,000 wins in NCAA Division I history during the 2015 season. She has won more Big 12 games (273-83) than any coach in the league’s history and has twice as many wins as any other coach in OU history. Gasso’s Sooner teams have fi nished second or higher 16 diff erent times since the inception of the Big 12 in 1996. They have won over 76 percent of their Big 12 contests, and OU has claimed eight Big 12 regular season and four championship titles under her direction.

Numerous Sooner players have prospered under Gasso’s tutelage and garnered national, regional and conference recognition. Keilani Ricketts was the two-time USA Softball National Player of the Year in 2012 and 2013, becoming just the third player in history to win more than once. Gasso has also directed 50 All-Americans, 110 All-Region honorees and 137 all-conference selections. In the Big 12 era, eight Sooners have been named Big 12 Player of the Year a total of 10 times, four have been selected as Big 12 Freshman of the Year, three as Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and one as Big 12 Newcomer. In 2010, Amber Flores became the fi rst player in league history to earn Player of the Year honors twice, while Shelby Pendley joined her in winning the award twice in 2013 and 2015. The OU softball success under Gasso has also spilled over into the classroom where the Sooners have been honored with 106 academic all-conference honors. Nine of those have gone on to become Academic All-Americans, including Lana Moran, the 2000 Academic All-American of the Year. Gasso and her staff have consistently been recognized for their eff orts on and off the fi eld. The staff was awarded three consecutive Speedline/NFCA Midwest Region Coaching Staff of the Year awards from 1999-2001 and received the national honor in 2000 and 2013. Gasso and staff have claimed the regional honor nine times total, with the most recent award coming in 2015. In addition, Gasso has been named the Big 12 Coach of the Year in 1996, 1999, 2000, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.
