140403 maize action - foundation for arable research in the last fortnight (up to the 28th march)...

22
4 April 2014 Weather summary 15 28 March 2014 Note: data is missing from the Rangiora and Matamata weather stations – some long term data has been substituted. Cumulative Radiation (from 14th Sept): Whangarei and Palmerston North continue to record below their average. The remaining areas are all recording above their average. Cumulative Growing Degree Days (GDDs (from 14th Sept)): Growing degree days are the average of the daily maximum plus minimum temperatures less a base temperature of 8 (NZ) o C. As most maize silage crops are being harvested or very close to it, GDD figures now have little relevance at this late crop growth stage. With the exception of Morrinsville, New Plymouth, and Ashburton all areas continue to record above the long term average. Soil temperature (10 cm) averages for the fortnight: Soil temperatures generally have, in the last fortnight, risen above the long term average in all areas except Pukekohe, Hamilton, and Hawera. The range above average is 0.1 to 2.2oC and so not a significant rise. Rainfall: In the last fortnight (up to the 28 th March ) cyclone Lusi bought significant rainfall to Eastern areas, (Whangarei, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, and much of the South Island), but very little rain to other areas. The severe drought in Waikato and Dargaville continues with other North island areas now becoming very dry. In the last fortnight Takaka received 85mm rain while Wanganui received none. Evapotranspiration (ET) total for last fortnight: In the last fortnight Whakatane recorded the national high at 41mm (Hamilton and Dargaville were 39mm) while Ashburton the national low at 21mm. E.T. figures are about 10mm less this fortnight than 2 weeks previously. Field report Northland: Maize silage harvesting is now about 85% completed. Yields have varied from 14 to 24t/ha depending on planting date and rainfall. The late planted crops that received little rain have suffered the most, while direct drilled crops have generally performed better (less disturbed soils holding more moisture). There is some crop lodging from Cyclone Lusi’s winds. Grain harvesting has produced mixed results depending on rainfall with yields generally varying between 9 and 11t/ha. However, a few paddocks have yielded 13t/ha. The grain harvest will gain momentum over the next fortnight. Waikato: Hot temperatures (25 to 29 o C) and winds continue to rapidly dry down maize and contractors have been extremely busy harvesting drier than normal crops. The maize silage harvest season is only two weeks from finishing. Yields to date, on all but the peat soils are low to average (17 to 21tDM/ha). The average would be 19t DM/ha. Peat soils where plants can access moisture at depth are producing better crop yields. Most crops are now coming in on the dry side (+40%DM) and so rolling and stack compaction is important. Grain harvest has just commenced in the Northern Waikato so it is too early to comment on yields. Moistures are 16 to 17% for early planted crops. Keep scouting headlands for weeds such as Velvet leaf / Noogoora bur and alligator weed (see photos below).

4 April 2014   Weather summary 15 ‐ 28 March 2014   Note: data is missing from the Rangiora and Matamata weather stations – some long term data has been substituted.  Cumulative Radiation (from 14th Sept): Whangarei and Palmerston North continue to record below their average.  The remaining areas are all recording above their average.

Cumulative Growing Degree Days (GDDs (from 14th Sept)): Growing degree days are the average of the daily maximum plus minimum temperatures less a base temperature of 8 (NZ) oC. Rainfall: In the last fortnight (up to the 28th March) cyclone Lusi bought significant rainfall to Eastern areas, (Whangarei, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, and much of the South Island), but very little rain to other areas.

Waikato:  Hot temperatures (25 to 29oC) and winds continue to rapidly dry down maize and contractors have been extremely busy harvesting drier than normal crops.

As I write, some most welcome rain is falling in the region. Hopefully there will be sufficient to assist with the establishment of post‐maize grass and crops.   Bay of Plenty:  There continues to be a huge difference now between the green of BOP and the brown of Waikato. Maize silage harvesting is now about 90% completed with good yields being reported (18 to 26tDM/ha). Most are averaging 22‐23t DM/ha. Some early grain has been harvested but it is still a little early for most crops. Moistures are currently around 25%. Growers are again reminded to continue to scout headland areas for Noogoora Bur (see photo below).

Gisborne:  Grain harvesting is starting to pick up pace and is now about 15% completed. Yields are good at 12 to 14t/ha on average. Some common rust is still active on later planted crops.

Hawke’s Bay:  Hastings is now dry and maize crops are rapidly drying down. Maize silage harvesting continues, but yield reports are unavailable. Grain harvesting has commenced with some reports of 13t/ha. Some high moisture grain is being harvested for stock feed for drought affected Waikato dairy farms.  A few isolated pockets of headsmut (Sphacelotheca reiliana) have been observed.

Taranaki:  Taranaki is becoming dry, but crops are reported to be yielding well at 22 to 23t DM/Ha. However, since most crops are grown on‐farm and not weighed, it is difficult to give accurate figures.

Manawatu:  The area is dry now and maize crops are drying down more rapidly. Maize silage harvesting is approximately 75% completed, with very variable yields (15 to 25t DM/ha). The first higher moisture grain has been harvested in the Turakina area but it is still too early for most grain crops.   Wairarapa:  The maize silage harvest is now about 50% completed, with yields up around 0.5t DM/ha this season, and averaging 19to 20t DM/ha.  Canterbury:  Dull wetter weather continues and crops still require some good heat and radiation to progress. Maize silage harvesting has begun, but it is too early to comment on yields.   Establishing following crops after droughts  The dry weather means that herbicide residues may remain in the soil after harvest and affect subsequent grass seed germination. You can check this by carefully placing the top 100mm of representative soil in a plant tray, sowing some mustard seed, watering and then checking for normal germination and plant health. Low or nil germination may indicate high residue levels. If this occurs talk to your seed agent about species selection for that paddock, or wait for rain and test again.  Soil nutrient levels following harvesting are likely to be higher than normal due to lower yields and low leaching. Check nutrient levels with soil tests before planting, as this may translate into fertiliser savings for the subsequent crop.
