    THREE CAPTION EXAMPLES WITH MISTAKES

    1. RANK THESE: which does its job the best ?

    2. FIND AND CIRCLE the dozen mistakes included (refer to thechecklist at the end of this pack)

IMAGE 1: Theo Van Doesberg , Alphabet , 1919 (Typography); from Graphic Styles

I have chosen this as an example of abstract typography it was made by a friendof Mondrian, the abstract painter, in the de stijl group and, like the painterswork, its geometric. It is dominated by verticals and horizontals, with no curvesor diagonals. It is very minimal too, with no serifs or decoration and with only

one primary colour used. I think, therefore, that this is a good example althoughit doesnt work well for me, especially when you look at the letters R, Z and Y.

    IMAGE 2: A M Cassandre , Grand Sport , 1925 (2D Design); from Graphic Styles

This poster is, I think, an example of 2D design that can be said to be influenced by cubism. Cassandre is famous for his Art Deco posters and the cubists werewell known for there trademark use of different viewpoints, seen here in the waythe ear jaw pipe nose and eye are all treated. Also, typical of cubism is thelimited monochrome colour, the shorthand way of indicating things and the

blurring of foreground and background. It isnt the best of examples, though, because it isnt fragmented, faceted or collaged; but I like the stylish effect thathes created.

IMAGE 3: Herbert Bayer , Lonely City Dweller , 1932 (Photography; from Icons of Photography: the Twentieth Century

This photograph is a photomontage and I think that its an example of Dada. Typical of Dada artists, he has used readymade photographs, cut them up and rearranged

parts of them to create a shocking or disturbing city image. It suggests an idea or

message that people can see how helpless they are in the city, or, you cancover your eyes but you cant stop seeing.

The image might be nihilistic because it seems to attack modern life. However, becauseof the date, I think that this example may be considered Surealism (and to dowith its inner dream world) because it isnt as lo-fi and aggressive as much of Dada. I think that it is very effective though and as someone said is a remarkableand captivating metaphor for urban life.
