Part 1 – Overview of the Tabernacle: A Picture of our Life in Jesus Christ Dr. Brandon S. Park – November 6th, 2013 It has been said that “Real salvation is not getting man out of earth into heaven, but getting God out of heaven in to man.” One of the clearest illustrations and best object lessons for spiritual truth is the Old Testament tabernacle. In the Old Testament, God had a _______________ for His people; in the New Testament God has a ________________ for His tabernacle.(“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you?” 1 Cor. 6:19). Why did God give Moses the blueprints to construct the Tabernacle? Exodus 25:8, “that I may dwell among them.” It was the one physical place where God could meet with His people for instruction, worship, blessing, and atonement for sin. God said in Exodus 29:45, “ I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will be their God.” The tabernacle would be a daily reminder of His presence. Bible scholar Merrill Unger said, “The tabernacle and all that pertained to it was typical of the presence of God with His people.” THE DIMENSIONS OF THE TABERNACLE The ____________ Court – It’s size was 75’ feet by 150’ ft. A fence 7’ feet high enclosed it. The gate facing east was 30 feet wide. The furnishings inside the outer court included a brazen altar, and the laver (wash basin). The ____________ CourtThe first part of the inner court a space 15 feet wide, 15 feet high and 30 feet long containing three pieces of furniture. There was a table of showbread, the golden lamp stand or menorah, and in the center at the door of the Holy of Holies was the altar of incense. The ________ of __________ 15 feet by 15 feet by 15 feet, a perfect cube. This room contained the most important furnishing – the Ark of the Covenant. The Tabernacle is a Picture of Jesus Christ Dr. M.R. Dehone said "There is no portion of scripture richer in meaning or more perfect in its teaching of the plan of redemption than this divinely designed building." The Tabernacle tells us the story of God’s plan for salvation long before Jesus was ever born. It is mentioned in 50 chapters in our Bible. In Exodus alone, there are 16 chapters devoted to it. 1. THE TABERNACLE IS A ________________ BUILDING It took about 78 months to construct this building. About 8500 people transported this building because it was portable. God would physically reveal His presence in a “pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.” God’s presence would hover over this building at all times. When the “cloud” moved, it was Israel’s signal to pack up the Tabernacle and move their encampment to wherever God was directing them. In Exodus 25:17, God gives the instruction as to the types of materials that would be necessary to construct the Tabernacle. Vs.12 says, “The LORD said to Moses, "Tell the Israelites to bring me an offering. You are to receive the offering for me from each man whose heart prompts him to give.” The people were to bring their offerings to fund and resource the building of the Tabernacle. Read Exodus 36:56 – the response to give towards this “building project” was so strong that the people had to be ordered to stop giving. In Exodus 25:3, it tells you of the different materials used in the construction of the Tabernacle. (All materials weighed an estimated 19,000 lbs. and would be worth $20 million dollars today.) It was to be constructed of three metals: Gold, Silver, and Brass. Exodus 25:4 tells us of the types of fabric to be used: Blue and purple and scarlet and fine linen and goat's hair. In verse 5 notice some skins were used. Ram's skins, dyed red as well as Badger's skins. The outside covering over the Tabernacle was badger skin. This was a precious commodity used to make shoes for the Israelites. The people were being asked to give up the skin that made their shoes. Yet the The Tabernacle The Bible seems to indicate that the soul consists of primarily of our mind/intellect, emotions, and our will. The Soul is Centered in the MIND / INTELLECT –“So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off.” (Proverbs 24:14) The Soul is also the center of EMOTIONS –“And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.” (1 Samuel 18:1) The Soul is the Center of the WILL –“The things that my soul refused to touch are as my sorrowful meat.” (Job 6:7) Your soul is that part of your nature through which we relate to ourselves and to others. My soul is the real me living inside of this “earthly house” called my body. III. The HOLY OF HOLIES IS A SYMBOL OF OUR ______________ AND HOW WE RELATE TO THE SPIRITUAL WORLD Hebrews 4:12, “For the word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit…” The reason why mankind is special apart from all of God’s creation is that we have a SPIRIT. Plants have a body. Animals may have a body and a soul. But only man has a body a soul AND a Spirit. Genesis 2:7 says that God breathed into Adam “the breath of life.” The soul of an animal will perish – but man’s soul eternally linked with his spirit—will live forever. When we are born again—we become joined with Christ—the Spirit of God is now the Spirit that dwells with us. Once God’s Spirit comes to reside in us – He begins to transform our soul (intellect, emotions, and will). And the soul is meant to motivate the body to navigate through this world with the purpose of accomplishing God’s will. QUOTE: Ian Thomas, “To be in Christ—that is redemption; but for Christ to be in you—that is sanctification! To be in Christ—that makes you fit for heaven; but for Christ to be in you—that makes you fit for earth! To be in Christ—that changes your destination; but for Christ to be in you—that changes your destiny! The one makes heaven your home—the other makes this world His workshop.”

It  has  been  said  that  “Real  salvation  is  not  getting  man  out  of  earth  into  heaven,  but  getting  God  out  of  heaven  in  to  man.”  One  of  the  clearest  illustrations  and  best  object  lessons  for  spiritual  truth  is  the  Old  Testament  tabernacle.              In  the  Old  Testament,  God  had  a  _______________  for  His  people;  in  the  New  Testament  God  has  a  ________________  for  His  tabernacle.  (“Do  you  not  know  that  your  bodies  are  temples  of  the  Holy  Spirit,  who  is  in  you?”  1  Cor. Bible  scholar  Merrill  Unger  said,  “The  tabernacle  and  all  that  pertained  to  it  was  typical  of  the  presence  of  God  with  His  people.”

The  Tabernacle  4

The  Bible  seems  to  indicate  that  the  soul  consists  of  primarily  of  our  mind/intellect,  emotions,  and  our  will.

The  Soul  is  Centered  in  the  MIND  /  INTELLECT  –  “So  shall  the  knowledge  of  wisdom  be  unto  thy  soul:  when  thou  hast  found  it,  then  there  shall  be  a  reward,  and  thy  expectation  shall  not  be  cut  off.”  (Proverbs  24:14)

The  Soul  is  also  the  center  of  EMOTIONS  –  “And  it  came  to  pass,  when  he  had  made  an  end  of  speaking  unto  Saul,  that  the  soul  of  Jonathan  was  knit  with  the  soul  of  David,  and  Jonathan  loved  him  as  his  own  soul.”  (1  Samuel  18:1)

The  Soul  is  the  Center  of  the  WILL  –  “The  things  that  my  soul  refused  to  touch  are  as  my  sorrowful  meat.”    (Job  6:7)

Your  soul  is  that  part  of  your  nature  through  which  we  relate  to  ourselves  and  to  others.  My  soul  is  the  real  me  living  inside  of  this  “earthly  house”  called  my  body.

III.  The  HOLY  OF  HOLIES  IS  A  SYMBOL  OF  OUR  ______________  AND  HOW  WE  RELATE  TO  THE  SPIRITUAL  WORLD            Hebrews  4:12,  “For  the  word  of  God  is  quick  and  powerful,  and  sharper  than  any  two-‐edged  sword,  piercing  even  to  the  dividing  of  soul  and  spirit…”            The  reason  why  mankind  is  special  apart  from  all  of  God’s  creation  is  that  we  have  a  SPIRIT.

Bible  says  that  for  those  40  years  that  they  wandered  in  the  wilderness,  their  shoes  never  got  old  (Deuteronomy  8:4).    God  rewards  us  when  we  are  willing  to  sacrifice  for  Him.

2.  THE  TABERNACLE  IS  A  _________________  BUILDING              Look  at  verse  8.    "And  let  them  make  me  a  sanctuary;  that  I  may  dwell  among  them."    The  word  sanctuary  means  a  sacred  place,  a  set  apart  place.    Exodus  40  tells  us  that  when  the  building  was  completed,  God  came  down  in  that  visible  shekinah  glory  cloud  and  filled  the  tabernacle.                Why  was  the  Tabernacle  built?    God  wanted  to  be  in  the  _________  of  His  ____________.    The  Tabernacle  was  to  be  situated  right  in  the  middle  of  the  Israelite  encampment.  When  the  Tabernacle  was  set  up,  the  nation  of  Israel  surrounded  it  with  three  tribes  to  the  North,  South,  East,  and  West.    It  was  a  reminder  that  God  was  right  there  with  them.              The  Holiness  of  God  is  pictured  in  the  Tabernacle.    As  you  approached  it  from  the  outside,  you  would  see  a  linen  fence.    Linen  pictures  the  righteousness  of  God.  On  the  inside  there  was  gold  everywhere.  Gold  is  a  picture  of  the  pure  holiness  of  God.      In  the  Outer  Court,  you  would  see  everything  covered  in  brass.    Brass  is  a  picture  of  judgment  which  reminds  us  that  God  is  holy  and  a  holy  God  must  deal  with  sin.                There  are  three  entrances  in  that  building.    The  outside  fence  was  known  as  the  gate.    The  entrance  to  the  Holy  Place  was  the  door.    Between  the  Holy  Place  and  the  Holy  of  Holies,  there  was  a  veil.    All  three  of  those  entrances  are  beautiful  pictures  of  our  Lord  Jesus  Christ  who  opens  up  the  gate,  who  opens  up  the  door,  who  through  His  own  flesh,  the  veil,  makes  it  possible  for  you  and  me,  by  His  blood  to  come  in.

3.  THE  TABERNACLE  IS  A  ___________________  BUILDING            There  were  heavenly  lessons  that  God  wanted  to  teach  His  people  through  that  earthly  tabernacle.    Hebrews  8:1-‐5,  “Now  the  main  point  in  what  has  been  said  is  this:  we  have  such  a  high  priest,  who  has  taken  His  seat  at  the  right  hand  of  the  throne  of  the  Majesty  in  the  heavens,  a  minister  in  the  sanctuary  and  in  the  true  tabernacle,  which  the  Lord  pitched,  not  man.  For  every  high  priest  is  appointed  to  offer  both  gifts  and  sacrifices;  so  it  is  necessary  that  this  high  priest  also  have  something  to  offer.  Now  if  He  were  on  earth,  He  would  not  be  a  priest  at  all,  since  there  are  those  who  offer  the  gifts  according  to  the  Law;  who  serve  a  copy  and  shadow  of  the  heavenly  things,  just  as  Moses  was  warned  by  God  when  he  was  about  to  erect  the  tabernacle;  for,  "SEE,"  He  says,  "THAT  YOU  MAKE  all  things  ACCORDING  TO  THE  PATTERN  WHICH  WAS  SHOWN  YOU  ON  THE  MOUNTAIN."            This  Old  Testament  Tabernacle  was  to  be  a  copy  or  a  shadow.    In  verse  5  he  also  uses  the  word  "pattern".    The  Greek    word  pattern  is  transliterated  "type".    A  type  is  a  person  or  event  or  object  in  the  Old  Testament  which  pictures  a  person  or  event  or  object  in  the  New  Testament.    The  Tabernacle  is  an  Old  Testament  picture  of  Jesus  Christ  and  who  we  are  in  Christ  Jesus.              Exod.  25:9,  “According  to  all  I  show  you,  after  the  pattern  of  the  tabernacle,  and  the  pattern  of  all  the  instruments  thereof,  even  so  shall  you  make  it.”              Notice  the  furnishings  of  the  Tabernacle  and  how  they  symbolize  what  Christ  is  doing  in  the  lives  of  believers

The  Tabernacle  as  a  Picture  of  Who  We  Are  in  Jesus  Christ              When  God  designed  the  OT  tabernacle  –  He  designed  it  with  three  major  parts  or  sections.    The  3-‐fold  pattern  of  the  tabernacle  teaches  us  something  very  important  about  the  nature  of  God,  how  He  wants  us  to  approach  Him  in  worship,  and  about  us  as  His  temples  in  this  age.              The  Outer  Court  was  visible  to  all  and  visited  by  all.    It  was  here  that  the  external  worship  of  the  people  would  take  place.              The  Inner  Court  (aka  “Holy  Place”)  was  restricted  for  only  the  priests  to  worship  and  offer  service  to  God.              The  Holy  of  Holies  was  off  limits  to  everyone  except  one  person  –  the  High  Priest.    (The  Bible  says  that  Jesus  is  our  High  Priest).    It  was  here  that  God  dwelt  in  His  shekinah  glory  between  the  cherubim  that  covered  the  mercy  seat  of  the  ark  of  the  covenant.

Why  does  the  tabernacle  have  3  sections?  I  believe  its  because  we  serve  a  triune  God.    The  God  we  worship  is  one  God  who  has  revealed  Himself  in  three  distinct  persons  –  Father,  Son,  and  Holy  Spirit.  Just  as  God  is  triune  in  nature—man  is  created  in  His  image.    We  also  have  a  triune  nature:  Body,  Soul,  and  Spirit.    1  Thessalonians  5:23,  “And  the  very  God  of  peace  sanctify  you  wholly;  and  I  pray  God  your  whole  spirit  and  soul  and  body  be  preserved  blameless  unto  the  coming  of  the  Lord  Jesus  Christ.”

Borrowing  from  the  imagery  of  the  Tabernacle  –  it  could  be  said  that  as  Christians,  we  are  a  house  of  three  rooms  (body,  soul,  and  spirit).    God  created  us  with  three  parts  because  we  are  created  to  know  three  worlds:  the  physical  world,  the  psychological  world,  and  the  spiritual  world.

When  a  man  is  rightly  related  to  the  material/physical  world  with  his  body  –  He  is  healthy.    When  he  is  rightly  related  to  the  psychological  world  with  his  soul—he  is  happy.  When  He  is  properly  related  to  the  Spiritual  world  of  God  with  his  spirit—He  is  holy.

 I.  THE  OUTER  COURT  IS  A  SYMBOL  OF  OUR  ___________  AND  HOW  WE  RELATE  TO  THE  PHYSICAL  WORLD            The  body  is  what  the  Bible  calls  the  “outward  man”  (2  Corinthians  4:16).    The  human  body  corresponds  to  the  outer  court  of  the  tabernacle.  Because  the  outer  court  was  a  place  of  sacrifice.  Interestingly,  the  NT  calls  our  bodies  the  place  of  sacrifice.  In  Romans  12:1,  Paul  commanded  us  to  present  our  bodies  as  a  “living  sacrifice.”

II.  THE  HOLY  PLACE  (INNER  COURT)  IS  A  SYMBOL  OF  OUR  ____________  AND  HOW  WE  RELATE  TO  THE  PSYCHOLOGICAL  WORLD            The  Greek  word  for  soul  is  phyche  –  that’s  the  term  we  get  the  English  word  psychology.

1.  THE  TABERNACLE  IS  A  ________________  BUILDING              It  took  about  7-‐8  months  to  construct  this  building. In  Exodus  25:1-‐7,  God  gives  the  instruction  as  to  the  types  of  materials  that  would  be  necessary  to  construct  the  Tabernacle.  Vs.1-‐2  says,  “The  LORD  said  to  Moses,  "Tell  the  Israelites  to  bring  me  an  offering.  You  are  to  receive  the  offering  for  me  from  each  man  whose  heart  prompts  him  to  give.”  The  people  were  to  bring  their  offerings  to  fund  and  resource  the  building  of  the  Tabernacle.            Read  Exodus  36:5-‐6  –  the  response  to  give  towards  this  “building  project”  was  so  strong  that  the  people  had  to  be  ordered  to  stop  giving. Yet  the
