It’s that time of year again ... Student Report Time!

Student reports were sent home today and you may have noticed the ‘new look’ of our reports. The information in the reports give parents an overview of their child’s progress both academically and socially over Semester 1. Parents are encouraged to read and discuss the report with their child/children in readiness for the Student Led Conferences in Week 10. You will have received a Student Led Conference note with the report.

It is important to make an appointment with your child’s class teacher to discuss in depth the contents of the report. If you are unable to attend a conference on the particular day stated on the note, please contact the class teacher to arrange a suitable time on another day that is convenient to you both.

ANSWER TO MATHS PROBLEM OF WEEK 7

The winner of CPS Problem of the week for Week 7 was Yooey Jackson in 2H. He worked out the answer using his 3 times tables. The

brothers were 5 years old and 15 years old. It's great to see students in the Infants classes

working mathematically.

SRC BOOK OF THE WEEK The Ruffs is the newest addition to the Aussie Bites series. It is a good book for readers who are just starting to read chapter books. It is about a family of bushrangers in the Victorian gold rush. I rate it:

In Term 3 our school will provide a range of activities to begin your child’s smooth transition to ‘big school’.

Our program Big School for Little Fellas will commence in Week 2 of Term 3. It will run on Tuesdays from 9.00 to 11.00am.

The program is designed for children who do not currently attend or access any

preschool in 2012 and plan to attend school in 2013.

If you would like your child to attend Big School for Little Fellas, please contact the school on 68421771 (and leave a message for Leanne Pincham).

Have a new kid by Friday (wisdom from the Proverbs)

There’s a Bible Proverb that says “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it” 22:6

#2 We’ve begun by taking the word train, but that little word ”up” adds so much depth, “train up”

* train up, not down; (most of us train down - majoring on the negative - you know how yelling and threatening your kids makes you feel.) * Warnings imply failure – just act. * Put the ball in their court (make them responsible – this is the goal of parenting – to create responsible children) * The best trainer of a child’s heart is the reality of consequences – a child cannot discipline himself, so you must. * Fighting with your child is an act of cooperation in their rebellion * Gentle words defuse anger, harsh words stir it up. * Stay cool, don’t back down and you will win the battle of the wills

It’s worth the effort.

A thought from your School Chaplain

School Event: Teddy Bear’s Picnic Book: Fairy Tales—especially ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’ TEACHING MEMORIES First day: I taught at my primary school. Holiday Homework Parents and carers sometimes ask teachers for homework or school activities for their children to do during holiday breaks taken during the school term. The teachers have put together this list of ideas which should not only provide useful learning experiences but also be fun!

The best learning occurs when the activity has purpose and is relevant. For this reason the suggestions listed here, which relate closely to the holiday experience, will be far more meaningful to your child than trying to complete school-related activities provided by the teacher.

Some holidays taken during term time involve extended or overseas travel. We remind parents never to underestimate the value of travel as an educational experience in itself.

ENGLISH: Talking and Listening is a very important part of the English Syllabus. There are lots of fun ways to pass the time and improve communication skills when travelling. Make up stories (eg, each family member invents a story about how a town or bridge

got its name). Memory game - ‘I went to the shop and bought a …..’ Each person keeps on adding an

item. The person able to recall all the items as the game progresses is the winner. Lots of purposeful talk about the holiday and points of interest to be enjoyed. Making up words using the three letters of number plates, or making up a phrase using

the three letters as initials.

Children are always best motivated to read and write when an activity is relate to what they are doing.

Keep a daily diary or journal during the holiday. If children need guidance with this, they can write under simple headings like ‘What I Did’ and ‘How I Felt’. Depending on the child’s age, drawing and labelling diagrams may be appropriate.

Take photographs and/or collect postcards and add them to a journal or scrapbook - with captions.

Use every opportunity along the way to read holiday related literature, eg, road signs, timetables, maps and travel brochures.

MATHEMATICS: During every holiday we use lots of mathematics without even thinking about it!

In the car: Use directories and/or maps and discuss how to find streets, suburbs, etc. Work out together the best way to get from one town to another. Estimate how long it will take to travel one kilometre. Play ‘I Spy’. Make tallies of interesting things you see when travelling. (How many red cars/petrol

stations, etc). Add the number on the number plates of cars.

KH have now finished their mid-year assessments. Many children have worked very hard and can now read sentences and write beautifully. During the next 2 weeks we have Mr Will Robinson doing a Teaching Practice in our class. He already has been a great help in our maths lessons and story writing time.

Congratulations to Sam Abbott, Tom Young, Ned & Jack Isedale, Blake Nguyen, Issac McElhinney, Jasper Somervaille, Angus Lambert and Bede Turnbull for making it to Regional Softball. We wish you well. On Friday 8 June, ten students from Coonabarabran Public and five students from Coolah Central School went to the Zone Softball trials. First we did a skills test, catching and throwing the ball. Then we had a drink of water. After that we had a game. All of us were picked one by one to come and bat. After that we had some lunch while Mr Keppie made up his mind to who would go up to the next level. Mr Keppie called us over and told us who was going to the next level. One girl and two boys from Coolah made it to the next level and nine students from our school made it. I had a great time. By Angus Lambert

ATTENDANCE– EXEMPTIONS There are times during the school year that children cannot attend school. Most absences, whilst are best avoided, are necessary for the family. We are endeavouring to initiate a roll monitoring program where these absences do not count on your child’s record. Absences for reasons such as: medical (whooping cough, measles, family visits to the doctor, dentist, paediatrician, etc), exceptional circumstances (floods, funerals, family holidays, etc) apply here. These absences will be able to be granted as exemption from attendance. To ensure this exemption is granted the Department Of Education has requested that the school (Principal, classroom teacher or office staff) be informed of the absence beforehand. The school will then ensure that the necessary paper work is completed.

Last Week KC went on an adventure. We went on a walk and saw lots of interesting toadstools. These toadstools were outside our building and they were all different sizes. They were red with white spots. We didn’t touch them because we thought they might be dangerous to touch. We enjoyed looking at them and had to be so careful not to tread on them. When we came Inside we wrote a recount. Here are some of the recounts that our class wrote: We went out the gate. We saw the beautiful toadstools. By Connie We went out the gate. We saw the toadstools. By Isaac We went to the toadstools and it was fun. By Western We saw the toadstools. They are red. By Bonnie
