The Broward Center offers new options for people of all abilities

Arts for AllOn October 28, the Broward Center will offer its first sensory-friendly performance, the latest in a long line of innovations that offer increased access to the arts for children or adults on the autism spectrum as well as individuals with other sensitivity issues or developmental disabilities.

“At this performance of Tarzan, we’ll lower the lighting and sound levels, keep the house lights at half and have quiet rooms available away from the action,” explains Slow Burn Artistic Director Patrick Fitzwater, who is preparing his cast and creative team for the special Saturday matinee in the Amaturo Theater.

“The actors portraying Little Tarzan, Tarzan and Jane will introduce themselves with a pre-curtain speech in their street clothes reminding the audience they will be telling a story on stage in costume and that they should look for them dressed as these characters,” Fitzwater says. “This can help keep the show from perhaps becoming too real and overwhelming. My hope is that audience members and families can enjoy a memorable theatrical experience without the usual anxiety of attending a live performance.”

Students from Broward County Public School’s Exceptional Student Education division will also fill a school day performance of this sensory-friendly production. “We are grateful for the generous support from the Taft Foundation and the Gore Family Memorial Foundation and partnerships with many local non-profits groups working with the special needs community to make this pilot project a success,” said Jan Goodheart, Broward Center’s Vice President of External Affairs.

See a SongSlow Burn Theatre as well as the Bank of America Broadway in Fort Lauderdale Series also offer open captioned performances throughout the season. For 260 productions, Lew Balaban has been the man behind the machine as he synchronizes what the actors say and sing with a text display located to the side of the stage. It’s a technique much like super titles for opera performances that allows those with hearing issues to more fully enjoy a performance.

He notes his prior experience as both a stage performer and a court reporter comes in handy. “Each performance is different. Ad libs by an actor are much more difficult than court testimony due to the fact you never know when they'll happen, so I'm perpetually aware and ready to jump in.”

One Friday evening performance of each Broadway tour also features an interpreter using American Sign Language to describe the vocal line of the production including dialogue, song lyrics and sound effects.

Hear a Double TakeJean Dorto can tell you how to hear a chorus line or an opera house chandelier starting to fall. She brings the performances to life for audience members who have vision impairments through a technique called audio description. Patrons wearing headsets learn about the visual elements of a production such as stage action, lighting, costumes and scenery.

“Words like ‘big’ don’t mean anything to a person without sight,” Dorto notes. “Instead I have to be precise and so, for example, I describe a costume as having 17 layers of tulle.”

Dorto prepares by researching each production and often viewing the sets and costumes in advance. “Many times a sighted person who has accompanied someone tells me they listened too and gained a better understanding of the show from the extra facts and information I provide.”

The Broward Center was the first theater in Florida to offer this service which is also provided at select performances of the Broadway series, Florida Grand Opera and the Arts Radio Network Theatre Project.

Touch the Imagination

Pursuing an Ongoing Mission

It may seem counterintuitive that a series devoted to reviving the golden age of radio plays would cater to those who are blind or have low vision. Yet, for each production this season, Arts Radio Network Theatre Project is collaborating with Lighthouse of Broward (which is also a partner in providing audio description) to offer touch tours. Participants are free to feel various props and also take part in a pre-curtain talk with one of the production's creative team.

Patrons can read the story through braille librettos offered by Florida Grand Opera at each performance. The company also offers audio description at Saturday evening performances in addition to large print librettos and projected English translations at every show.

Presented in collaboration with its performing arts and community partners, the Broward Center offers the above services free of charge in addition to providing ADA-approved signage, handrails and automatic door openers as well as wheelchair accessible seating, companion restrooms and public areas.

Senior Manager of Guest Services at Parker Playhouse Garry Novick has been a driving force behind the Broward Center’s accessibility programs. He has been recognized with awards on both the state and national levels for his leadership in theater accessibility.

Novick explains his passion saying, “I always think back to the guest who told me her hearing loss was when ‘the lights on Broadway went out for me.’ After attending her first open captioned performance, she exclaimed, ‘Light the lights, I'm back!’”

It is recommended that the request for seating for wheelchair access, sign-interpreted or open-captioned performances be made when purchasing tickets. Tickets for the sensory-friendly performance can be purchased by contacting [email protected] or calling 954.660.6307. For more information visit BrowardCenter.org/Visit/Accessibility-information.
