I would like to update you on progress with our building changes since we opened in September. You willrecall that whilst walls had been built over the summer, some classrooms were still awaiting glazing anddoors. I am delighted to report that this work has now been completed and in addition we have installednew security systems which have significantly improved the safety of students and staff and theirbelongings within the Academy.

Automatic door locks on all external entrance and exit doors have been installed as well as internal doorswithin the Academy. Doors are programmed to lock/unlock in line with the Academy day but they can, ofcourse, also be released at any time by staff identification cards. In the event of a fire alarm, all doors

automatically unlock so that students and staff can exit the building quickly and safely.

I know that a few parents have expressed concern about the fact that toilet doors are locked during lessontime. I would like to clarify that there is no restriction to students being able to access toilet facilitiesbefore and after school as well as during morning and lunchtime breaks. It is our expectation thatstudents use the facilities at that time and there is both ample time and plenty of toilets for students to doso. As a general rule, students will not be allowed out of lessons to go to the toilet (unless it is anemergency). If a student has a medical condition that requires him/her more frequent access, then ofcourse they are able to do so and arrangements will be made to issue them with their own toilet passcard.

Our programme of improvements to both the building and security means that teachers are able toconcentrate on delivering high quality lessons and students are able to focus on their learning withoutbeing distracted.

As we continue on our journey to become outstanding, there will be further improvements and changes tooperational systems within the Academy, and we look forward to your continued support as we improvethe educational outcomes for all of our students.

Computer Science Network interview This week both Year 9 and 10 computer science classes wereprovided with a great opportunity to visit the Server room on theEast site and interview Michael Lenton, one of the Oasis networkexperts. This was arranged to support their learning aboutnetworks as part of the computer science syllabus, and it wasextremely pleasing to see how the students engaged soenthusiastically. With only fifteen minutes to think up searchingquestions, they used the learning from their previous lessons to

interrogate Michael in order to understand how the networkoperates at the Academy and why certain choices were made. They found out more than they expected and left really impressedwith the set up and investment that has been made to provide uswith the best possible network. Given some of the questioning by year 10 students, Michael mayeven have reason to be concerned about future competition for hisrole as several students showed a keen interest in the career path/prospects for a network technician! Michael himself was a studentat the Academy and was taken on as an IT apprentice, when he

was due to leave school in year 13, following his A Levels. All in all it was a thoroughly worthwhile and enjoyable experience, andall thanks to Michael for his time and willingness to expose himself tosome searching questions that would challenge even the most experienced of teachers. Also well doneto the students who engaged so positively and learned so much in a short time.
