Ellie's diagnosis came out of nowhere. She was an athletic 10yearold girl whowas never sick, so no one expected herslight limp and sudden blurry vision tomean anything serious. When Ellie wasfirst admitted, her doctor insisted ononly speaking with her parents, notunderstanding that a young girl wantsto be involved in her healthcarediscussions. Her family realized quicklythat they needed something moreanexperience that would be morecompassionate and a treatment planthat would fit their family's needsbetter. Read Ellie Kavalieros' story

Schwartz Center Compassionate Care Scale
In an effort to better measure thedelivery of compassionate care, wehave been testing a Schwartz CenterCompassionate Care Scale™,which we hope will become a validatedinstrument that accurately reflectspatients' care experiences. An articleabout the scale entitled CanCompassionate Care beMeasured? appears in the currentissue of Patient Education andCounseling. We are planning to testthe scale in longterm facilities and
among highly engaged patients who are members of PatientsLikeMe, anonline community of more than 325,000 patients worldwide. The scalewas developed in conjunction with our 2010 national poll and has beentested and found to be reliable. If you are interested in investing in the piloting of this scale in longtermcare facilities, please contact Lisa Crane at 6176435490or [email protected].
