Major modifications in this revision are as follows: a) the title has been changed to “Steel filing cabinets - Specification”; b) addition of new terms and definitions on “carcasses” and “drawer pull” in Clause 3; c) incorporation of new clause on “Materials” in Clause 4; d) addition of new requirements on “Adjustable leveller” and “Anti-tilt or counter weight” in

Steel filing cabinets - Specification (Second revision)
1 Scope This Malaysian Standard specifies dimensions and other requirements for two types of filing cabinets, one intended primarily for the storage of A4 size documents and the other designed to hold foolscap size papers. Either type may have two, three or four drawers.
2 Normative References The following normative references are indispensable for the application of this standard. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the normative reference (including any amendments) applies. MS 1581 (all parts), Furniture - Storage units MS ISO 898 (all parts), Mechanical properties of fasteners made of carbon steel and alloy steel MS ISO 3574, Cold-reduced carbon steel sheet of commercial and drawing qualities
3 Terms and definitions For the purposes of this standard, the following terms and definitions apply (see also Figure 1). 3.1 carcasses Body of the cabinet. 3.2 depth A horizontal measurement from front to back of the cabinet. 3.3 drawer pull A handle to pull a drawer out of a chest or other furniture piece. 3.4 filing cabinets of foolscap and A4 size Cabinets designed to hold filed documents of these respective sizes. 3.3 height A vertical measurement from top to bottom of the cabinet.

3.5 suspended filling pockets Filing pockets designed to hold documents or files and equipped with hangers for engagement with filing cabinet suspension rails. 3.6 suspension rails A pair of parallel rails for supporting the hangers of suspended files, extending substantially the whole depth of the drawer. Suspension rails may be of separate parts or alternatively may be suitably formed from the sides of the drawer. 3.7 suspension slides The members which suspend the drawers in a cabinet and allow them to slide in and out. 3.8 width A horizontal measurement from side to side on a line parallel with the front of the cabinet.

4 Materials 4.1 Structural steel 4.1.1 Standards Except as otherwise permitted in 4.1.2, all cold-rolled carbon steel sheets (CRS) and strip, used for the manufacture of structural members for steel shelving shall comply with MS ISO 3574 or equivalent. The minimum thickness of cold rolled carbon steel sheet (CRS) used shall be 0.65 mm. 4.1.2 Other steels The above 4.1.1 shall not be interpreted as excluding the use of other steels, the properties and suitability of which are established by analysis, tests and other controls. 4.2 Fasteners Fasteners shall comply with MS ISO 898 series.
5 Dimensions The dimensions of A4 and foolscap cabinets shall be in accordance with Tables 1 and 2.

1. Measurements apply to two, three and four drawer cabinets.
2. Measurements to be made between vertical side members of the carcass.
3. These widths are 32 mm greater than the widths between the centres of the suspension rails to permit the hangers of suspended filing pockets to pass through the carcass opening.

1. Measured from the highest point on the inside floor of the drawer to the underside of the cross rail or that part of the carcass which separates the drawers.
2. The majority of A4 suspended filing pockets are approximately 318 mm wide. The average width of foolscap suspended filing pockets is 375 mm.
6 Tolerances
Unless otherwise stated, the tolerance on all dimensions shall be 2 mm.
7 Requirements 7.1 Drawer fittings Each drawer shall be fitted with either one of the following: a) a pair of suspension rails (where these are not integral with the drawer sides); or b) any suitable accessories. A drawer pull suitably designed and of adequate strength. 7.2 Suspension rails The suspension rails shall be capable of vertical adjustment to accommodate both tabbed and flat-topped suspended filing pockets. The suspension rails shall be tested in accordance with the conditions specified in MS 1581 series. The operative edges of suspension rails shall be smooth and preferably rounded in order to facilitate easy movement of the files. 7.3 Drawer suspension The suspension slides shall be of sturdy construction so that they do not distort or fail to operate when subjected to the test described in MS 1581 series nor shall the drawer pull be adversely affected by this test.

7.4 Locks Locks or locking mechanisms shall be of such kind as to lock all drawers of the cabinet simultaneously. The provision of a locking steel/iron bar for each cabinet shall be optional. 7.5 Adjustable leveller The cabinet shall be provided with adjustable levellers under the cabinet. These can be extended to compensate for an uneven floor. 7.6 Anti-tilt or counter weight The cabinet shall be fitted with an anti-tilt or counter weight mechanism to prevent toppling when opened.
8 Design 8.1 Design details 8.1.1 General The cabinet shall be designed so that no exposed sharp edges of corners remain that could cause harm to the user. Bottom surfaces of the carcass that rest on the floor shall be smooth and free from any sharp edges or corners liable to cause damage to floor or floor coverings. 8.1.2 Cabinet as a complete item The cabinet shall be so constructed that, when subjected to the tests described in MS 1581 series, it shall not develop any structural damage or impairment, if any, of the ease of operation of the drawers, the locks, or other movable components.
9 Safety 9.1 A sticker shall be placed on the top front side of the cabinet and on it shall be printed in red the word CAUTION and notification that the cabinet is likely to topple if: a) the upper drawer or drawers are loaded and pulled out when the lower drawer or drawers
are empty; and b) a second drawer is pulled out before that first drawer is pushed back.

10 Finishing 10.1 Preparation Sharp edges of sheet and angles shall be so arranged as to present no hazard to the users. All burrs and sharp edges shall be removed from the various components. All steel surfaces shall be rust free. Special attention shall be given to ensure that welds are clean and all slags spatter and dirt accumulation removed. 10.2 Finishing All primed surface shall be smooth, uniform exposed surfaces without rusts, wrinkles and grits. The coating thickness shall not less than 20 µm for wet coating and not less than 40 µm for powder coating. 10.3 Hardware Metal fasteners and other hardware shall be rust free.
11 Marking Cabinets complying with the requirements of this Malaysian Standard shall be clearly and legibly marked with the following: a) number of this Malaysian Standard; and b) manufacturer’s name or other means of identification.
