Raw-Unclean Edible Birdnest (EBN) – House nest - Specification
1 Scope This Malaysian Standard specifies requirements for the authenticity, quality and grading of raw-unclean edible-birdnest (EBN) harvested from birdnest premises.
2 Normative references The following normative references are indispensable for the application of this standard. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the normative reference (including any amendments) applies. MS 2273, Good Animal Husbandry Practice - Edible-nest Swiftlet ranching and its premises
3 Terms and definitions For the purpose of this standard, the following terms and definitions apply. 3.1 raw-unclean edible birdnest (EBN) This is also known as Unclean Birdnest Raw Material (UBRM) (Yan Wo raw material). It is the secretion from the salivary gland of the edible-nest Swiftlet belonging to Aerodramus species. It is harvested from edible-nest Swiftlet premises. It can be subjected to, but not limiting to, sorting, drying, grading, trimming, weighing and packing but without any cleaning process. 3.2 arc shape
Any EBN of the shape of a segment of a circle, formed naturally on a flat surface at the premises.
3.3 angular shape
Any EBN of angular shape of less than 90°, formed naturally on an angular surface at the premises.
3.4 fragment A splintered or broken part of EBN. 3.5 accredited laboratory Laboratory that has been accredited by the Department of Standards Malaysia.
4 Requirements 4.1 Requirements of post-harvest handling raw-unclean EBN 4.1.1 Raw-unclean EBN shall be obtained from ranch that has been implemented with good animal husbandry practice (MS 2273).

4.1.2 The raw-unclean EBN shall be handled with care at all times with minimum exposure to high temperature.
4.1.3 Every batch of nest harvested shall be recorded.
4.1.4 All raw-unclean EBN shall be kept in suitable protective containers and kept in storage room. The storage conditions are as below: a) premises shall have a facility for proper storage of raw-unclean EBN; and
b) store shall be kept dry and clean at all times with adequate ventilation. 4.1.5 The premise shall practice good pest-control. 4.2 Preliminary sorting and removal of foreign material process
4.2.1 The raw-unclean EBN may be sorted according to shape, size, or/and foreign material.
4.2.2 The raw-unclean EBN may be trimmed accordingly using suitable equipment to remove foreign material such as dirt, eggshell, cement, paint, and splinters.
4.3 Classification Raw-unclean EBN shall be classified according to Table 1.

4.3.1 The illustration of each shape is shown in Annex A. 4.3.2 The authenticity and quality of raw-unclean EBN shall be determined in accordance with the method given in Table 2.

4.3.3 All tests shall be done by the accredited laboratory.
5 Packaging 5.1 The raw-unclean EBN shall be packed in suitable protective containers to provide protection from hazards (physical, chemical and biological) during handling and transportation.

5.2 The materials used for packing shall be food grade, clean, non-toxic, and capable of withstanding damage during handling and transportation of the raw-unclean EBN. 5.3 Stamps bearing trade specifications are allowed provided the substance used for the printing or labelling is non-toxic.
6 Labelling The raw-unclean EBN package shall be labelled with the following particulars: a) name of produce (i.e. raw-unclean EBN); b) grade; c) batch number/barcode/ Quick Response Code (QRC) or its equivalent; d) net weight (in metrics system); e) name and address of packers, distributors/exporters and/or importers; f) date of packing; g) company registration number (where applicable); and h) country of origin ( e.g. Malaysia).
7 Compliance Each produce which is inspected by a competent authority and found conforming to the requirements of this Malaysian Standard at the time of inspection shall be deemed to comply with this Malaysian Standard.
8 Certification mark Each container, may by arrangement with a recognised certification body, be marked with the certification mark of that body, provided that the product conforms to the requirements of this Malaysian Standard.
9 Premise requirements The premises where the raw-unclean EBN produce is acquired shall prescribe to MS 2273 (for ranches).
10 Legal requirements The product in all other aspects shall comply with the requirements of the legislations currently in force in Malaysia.
