Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord. And let the perpetual

light shine upon him. May the souls of all the faithful

departed through the Mercy of God, rest in peace.

It seems that it’s becoming more common in churches of all kinds for people to

chew gum during services. However this is problema/c when it comes to the

Catholic Mass. If we had an audience with the Pope, President, or Queen we

would almost surely not be chewing gum when we met them. We would refrain

from doing so out of respect for the one we are mee/ng. As a sign of our great

respect for our Lord, we should not chew gum when we go to encounter Him in

the most complete way He can be encountered on earth, namely at Mass. More

problema/c s/ll is someone having gum in his or her mouth when receiving Holy

Communion. As Catholics, we believe that during the consecra/on, the bread on

the Altar ceases to be bread and becomes Jesus Himself. It is very important

that par/cles of the Host not get stuck to a wad of gum in someone’s mouth and

then eventually thrown out. When receiving Communion, nothing should be in

one’s mouth and the Host should be consumed immediately a7er recep/on.

When people chew gum during Mass, the vast majority of those doing so intend

no disrespect by it. Nonetheless because of what we believe about the Mass and

Holy Communion, we should refrain from doing so.

Understanding More Fully and Entering More Deeply into the Mass April 16

The Mass is the great focal point of Chris/an communal life and our

greatest opportunity for grace here on earth. Yet, it o7en feels like more

of an obliga/on than like the most incredible of gi7s. A deeper

understanding of the mystery of the Mass can help us to appreciate it in

all its richness more fully and then to enter into it more completely.

Father Eric will offer a three-part course with these goals in mind. The

class also will offer explana/ons and reflec/ons on the various parts of

the Mass. The course will be offered in the Parish Hall at 7:00 PM on

Clinton County Right to Life 2018 Oratory Contest

Clinton County Right to Life is sponsoring an oratory contest for high school students. This event involves researching, wri/ng and presen/ng a speech on abor/on, euthanasia, infan/cide, stem cell research or cloning. Our contest will be held this year at the KC Hall in St. John’s on March 24th. The top 3 contest winners receive prizes & the first place winner will advance to the state contest sponsored by Right to Life of Michigan in May. In June, the state winner will compete with other teens from across the country at the Na/onal Right to Life Commi.ee oratory contest in Kansas.
