Are Sports and Work Experience Equal?
A good friend and colleague, Ed Leak, is an adjunct professor at Niagara University. He is also
the Parks and Recreation Director of Orchard Park, NY. During the fall and spring semesters, I
travelled to NU where Ed and I presented current job opportunities in the leisure field to his students,
as well as what hiring managers are looking for when the students begin their job search. We also
presented helpful tips on what to include and not include on their resumes. We discussed what to
expect at the interview, how to dress and the process of eliminating candidates.
During our recent discussion, I asked the class what work experiences they had and whether it
was relevant to the job they are seeking. At that point, the blank stares surface, prompting me to
inquire how many of them have ever had a part time job. It always amazes us how many college
seniors have never been employed. This past fall semester, only 1 of 15 students in the audience had
any work experience. I proceeded to explain to the class that we would most likely only interview the
person with the work experience. The next question from the group is, I have played (insert any sport
or activity), I always made practices, worked hard on my own time and gave 100% during all contest
which is just like having a job, shouldn’t that count as work experience? The answer Ed and I always
give is “no.” We explain that participating in a sport or activity that you love is far different than going
to work. There will be days you have no desire to work, days you would rather take off and have fun
with your friends, days you have a headache, feel tired, and oh yes, feel lousy from that great party you
attended the night before. You will always attend your sport or activity when you don’t feel well,
because you love it. As hiring managers, we would have to take a chance that you would be as
dedicated to your job as you were to your sport or activity. If you had a part time job when you turned
16 or so, there would be a track record of work history. You would have references from a former
employer that we could contact and verify your employment and work ethic.
We are not at all suggesting giving up all sports and activities for a job, it is a well balanced
combination of both sports or activities and a job that will set you apart from the other candidates. If
possible, find a job you are interested in and you will be amazed at the experience and education you
will receive working with a varied group of people. As a bonus, you will explore jobs and industries you
never knew existed, possibly changing your projected college path.

Bubble Soccer
Location: Webster Recreation Center
Fee: $91Res/$96NR
Bubble Soccer is a hilarious combination of traditional soccer and big
bubble suits that transforms you into a human airbag. While your
upper body is safely enclosed in a huge inflatable bubble, your legs are
free to use for running, crashing and bouncing off of other players as
they fight for possession of the ball. These bubble balls are designed
to provide maximum comfort, ease of play and safety while playing a
high intensity game. Each bubble ball has adjustable soft-padded
straps and is worn like a backpack. The bubble is made of high quality
TPU (to avoid any sensitivity to PVC) and are available in two sizes:
adult (67") or for kids (59"). Children need to be at least 1.20 m or
47.5" tall to be able to play. The adult bubbles are suitable for people
up to 220 lbs (subject to body shape). Kids that are over 55.5" tall will
fit in the adult bubble, however they need to be physically able to
carry 20 lbs.
