Marina Guide to

Refuse / RecyclingOur refuse compounds are located near our bridgehead gates. We currently recycle Glass, cans, paper,plastic, oil & batteries

WaterAllow hose pipes to run for 30 secondsbefore filling tanks on the pontoons.Please recoil the hose pipes after use anddo not leave the hose end in the water asthis is unhygienic.

Diesel & GasA diesel pump is located on the outsideof the Marina Lock; diesel and gasbottle refills are available from 7.00amuntil half an hour before the office isclosed. No petrol is available at theMarina but there is a commercialgarage nearby. Please note that we onlysupply diesel containing FAME (Bio)

Electricity SuppliesMost of our berths have 240 volt /16amp supplies. In addition many of ourhammerheads also have 32amp supplies.Electricity is charged via a pre-paid cardsystem.

To use electricity for the first time,simply purchase a £5 electricity cardfrom a coin-operated card kiosk locatedat ‘M’ bridgehead or at reception. Future top-ups can be made at receptionusing this card.

Boatyard We have a 20 tonne Marine Travel Hoist available. A crane facility is also availablefor masts etc. The yard has variousbusinesses that undertake hull, GRP,wood, engineering and electrical repairs.Free storage ashore is offered to annualberthholders for a limited period (space permitting). The boatyard operateson Mon, Wed, Thurs, Fri & Sat.

TelephonesA public payphone is situated close to theNorth side bridgehead gate in phase 1.

LaundryThe laundry is located on the ground floorat reception. The machines are coinoperated (change available fromreception).

Car ParkingAll annual berth holders are entitled totwo car park permits. Permit holdersmay park their vehicle for free at any ofour three car parks providing theydisplay their valid permit.

Toilets and ShowersThere is 24 hour access to thesefacilities by use of a Marina pontoonsecurity fob. They are located at threelocations:• The rear (south) of Marina Control

building. A toilet for the disabled is also located here.

• Adjacent to the bridgehead on theNorth side of Phase I.

• Adjacent to the bridgehead on theSouth side of Phase II.

• Slop and sluice rooms are availablein phase II of the Marina.

A ship’s toilet may not be used whilstin the Marina.

SecurityEach bridgehead has a self locking gate,access is via a pontoon security fobavailable from reception for. There is arefundable deposit of £5 per fob. Please do not leave or prop the gatesopen; site security is in everyone’sinterest. A security officer patrols the Marina atnight and CCTV is in operationthroughout the marina.

Clear the area of people.

Contact the emergency services.Emergency telephone can be found atNorth side bertholder’s gate near EastBurrows Road.

Only tackle the fire if it is safe to do so,with the extinguishers provided in theemergency cabinets.

Retreat to a safe distance upwind - Do not run!

Do not obstruct bridge - emergencyservices will need clear access.

Follow instructions of marina staff.

Do not return to your vessel until the all clear has been given.

General Safety Safety equipment is installed on thepontoons at regular intervals. Eachbridgehead has a safety map outliningthese locations. Please familiariseyourself with this map.

Pontoon Safety / Adverse WeatherThe pontoons can become very slipperywhen they are wet or icy. Grit bins are situated close to eachbridgehead. High winds can cause mobilityproblems and strong gusts can catchyou off guard. Customers are advisednot to go out onto the pontoons inadverse weather conditions unlessabsolutely necessary. Particular careshould be taken when negotiating thebridgehead ramps and getting on or offboats. We advise all users to wear lifejackets when walking on the pontoons,especially in poor weather conditions.

InsurancePlease note that third party insurance for a minimum of £3,000,000 is mandatory for theduration of your stay at SwanseaMarina.

Speed LimitsThere is a 4 knot speed limit in the Marina Impounded water and river. The speed limit in the river is enforced by the docks board. Please control your wash.

Pilotage Notes

In Swansea Bay tidal streams flow anti-clockwise for 9.5 hrs (Swansea HW - 3.5 to +6), with at times a race off Mumbles Hd. From HW - 6 to - 3 the stream reverses, setting N past Mumbles Hd towards Swansea. Keep seaward of Mixon Shoal. When N of SW Inner Green Grounds (SWIGG) SCM It buoy, Q (6) + LFI 15s keep to W of dredged channel and clear of commercial ships. Yachts must motor in harbour and approach, maximum speed 4kn.

When entering the river allcraft should maintain alistening watch on SwanseaDock’s VHF channel 14 (Anyinstruction issued by theHarbour Master on thisfrequency must be followed).

If in doubt call “SwanseaDocks” on VHF14 or “TaweLock” on VHF 18

All Marina users arereminded that we share theentrance to the river withthe fairway for commercialshipping entering andleaving the port of Swansea.

It is very important that all boatowners obey the rules laid downby the authorities and give wayto commercial shipping at alltimes.

Entering and Leaving the Port

All pleasure craft using the port mustobserve the rules governing the“Prevention of Collisions at Sea”,particularly when navigating within thedredged channel North of the S.W.I.G.G.buoy (South West Inner Green Grounds)to the harbour entrance. You are advisedto approach the harbour entrance in the waters to the west of the dredgedchannel (where practicable).

Large vessels entering or leaving theharbour must be given a wide berth atall times.

All pleasure craft must be under powerwhen in the vicinity of the harbour andshould clear waters used by commercialshipping as soon as possible.

Access to Tidal Locks

All access from the sea to theMarina is through the TaweBarrage Lock during the publishedhours. During busy lockingperiods a queuing system will bein operation. Vessels that do notmake contact with theLockmaster or disobey his/herinstruction will not be givenpriority over other traffic. In theinterest of every boat owner’ssafety, it is of the utmostimportance that the Lockmaster’sinstructions are obeyed at alltimes.

Marina & Swingbridge – callsign: ‘Swansea Marina’ CH. 80

Tawe Barrage Lock – call sign:‘Tawe Lock’ CH. 18

It is essential that all boatowners wishing to proceedthrough the locks or swingbridgeoperate a VHF radio.

Vessels must call “Swansea Marina”on channel 80 before leaving theirberth to request lock information andmust remain listening on CH. 80 untilpassage through the bridge or lock iscompleted.

When you require use of the TaweBarrage lock you must call ‘Tawe Lock’to request information and remainlistening on CH. 18 until passagethrough the lock is completed. Do not proceed into the locks unlessinstruction has been given.

Vessels leaving either lockmust then transfer to the nextlock’s VHF channel onapproach and use theappropriate procedure above.

Lock Procedure and Tidal Curves, Datum, Time & Height Differences at Swansea Marina

The first lock out of the day at the Tawe lockwill be taken down at approximately 0710.The last Tawe lock in is half an hour beforethe close of business each day. Boat ownersshould be ready to leave their berth atapproximately quarter to the hour to allowvessels sufficient time to enter the Tawelock.

Any deviation from the above will be at thediscretion of the duty Tawe Lockmaster who willpay due regard to the volume of traffic andany other prevailing conditions.

Any vessels not returning on the same dayare required to inform the Lockmaster andCoastguard. Two holding buoys are situateddownstream from the lock and may be usedoutside of locking hours. Great care isnecessary at low water spring tides as thereis a danger of drying out.

Normal procedure for locking out throughthe Tawe Barrage lock is for the lock to betaken down on the hour and return to theriver on the half hour.

Swansea Marina’s central locationin the Bristol Channel makes it anunsurpassed cruising centre withmarinas to the east includingCardiff, Watchet and Portishead, with Neyland and Milford Havento the West. The spectacular, rugged coastlineof Devon is a mere twenty or somiles away.

When the weather is less kind you can enjoy oneof our museums or art galleries, or take thechildren to the fabulous water park at the LC2.

If you should decide to moor with uspermanently you will find that there is somethinghappening throughout the year. Annual eventsinclude the Waterfront Wonderland with itswinter fair and ice skating; the bi-annual AirShow, in the spring the annual Clyne in Bloomevent and, of course, the Swansea Bay Summer

Festival with events too numerousto mention.

Closer to home lie thecharming villages andbreathtaking coastline ofthe Gower Peninsula.Whether you are lookingfor secluded rocky coves orsweeping sandy bays youwill not be disappointed.Gower beaches frequentlyfeature in lists of toptwenty British beaches,why not visit and find out why.

Sports fans will not be disappointed; we are not far from top flight rugby and premiership football at the city’s Liberty Stadium. All watersports are well catered for and numerous gyms offer theopportunity to work off last night’s dinner!

So, whatever the weather and whatever the time of year, the city ofSwansea and its acclaimed marina will always have something to offer.
