On behalf of the Greater Oak Brook Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, we thank members and government partners for their fantastic participation and support, and for helping us address our critical mission: to lead and advocate on behalf of local business interests; and drive a positive business environment in the State of Illinois.

Indeed, leadership is everything and great leadership has been the chamber’s focus for the past year. The chamber’s board, staff and members have worked hard to be great leaders to advance the role and success of businesses. Board and staff have worked diligently to plan, carry out and accomplish the fi rst year of work in the chamber’s comprehensive strategic plan. Members have contributed their time and expertise to guiding the amazing work of the chamber’s important new strategic councils and committees.

At the Greater Oak Brook Chamber of Commerce, we aspire to provide the highest level of service and programs that deliver the most productive experience possible for members. And with this year’s creation of new goal-driven chamber councils and committees, we reached a higher level of member engagement and member satisfaction than ever before.

We are so grateful for the active and helpful leadership of nearly 250 council and committee members. These individuals provided great guidance and insights on specifi c industry needs and so many critical business issues related to: commercial real estate, business policy, banking and fi nance, hospitality and retail, workforce, technology and more. And the establishment of the chamber’s new Young Business Leaders group is now helping the chamber develop strong future leaders for our business community.

In addition, hundreds more members participated in meetings and events, including forums, networking breakfasts, building fairs and special purpose functions to attract new companies and meetings and conventions to Greater Oak Brook. We can’t thank all of these individuals enough for their interest and involvement in these strategic activities.

Economic Development Partnership Council

The Economic Development Partnership Council, comprised of key employers and municipal leaders in Oak Brook and Oakbrook Terrace, guides the partnership’s work to attract and retain businesses for Greater Oak Brook. One of the most important accomplishments of the past year was IRS approval of the partnership’s 501 c3 tax-exempt status. This new status means that the organization’s work may be supported by private grants and tax deductible business contributions.

YEAR IN REVIEW HIGHLIGHTS

by presenting a joint event in June; also presented a September joint forum with Choose DuPage highlighting local commercial real estate leaders who discussed the regional and local offi ce and retail market – and current positives and challenges for attracting and retaining businesses here.

■ Continued to build partnerships with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to strengthen import and export trade opportunities for local companies by supporting reauthorization of the charter of the Export-Import Bank of the United States, which helped fi nance $37.4 billion in U.S. exports last year.

■ Strengthened the chamber’s international trade partnerships with foreign consulates, commissioners and international trade organizations to reach foreign investors by working with the Uruguay and China Consulate offi ces to promote trade withlocal companies.

■ Presented four building fairs that reached a total of 3,200 employees in Greater Oak Brook. The objective of the building fairs was to keep Greater Oak Brook’s current offi ce tenants and their employees engaged and spending dollars in our communities, promoting Greater Oak Brook’s hotels, restaurants, retailers and other businesses.

■ Continued to strengthen the work of the Greater Oak Brook Transportation Project (pilot shuttle bug program) by helping the Lake County TMA survey nearly 1,000 Greater Oak Brook employees about their transportation needs. Routing work to determine the viability of an Oak Brook/Oakbrook Terrace shuttle was begun in December.

■ Expanded the chamber’s partnership with Choose DuPage and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO)

■ Worked with landlords and landlord representatives to market Greater Oak Brook’s properties to prospective offi ce and retail tenants in Chicagoland, around the nation and internationally.

■ Helped maintain Greater Oak Brook’s high offi ce and retail occupancy rates.

■ Engaged new offi ce and retail tenant representatives via meetings, events, written correspondence and regular electronic communication.

■ Helped recruit and facilitated the largest 2014 offi ce project wins in Greater Oak Brook.

■ Hosted the Fourth Annual Commercial Real Estate event, which attracted 50 offi ce and retail tenant representatives.

■ Hosted the Third Annual Experience Oak Brook Luncheon, which attracted 60 meeting planners from international, national and Chicagoland associations and organizations.


PUBLIC POLICY COUNCIL GREATER OAK BROOK CHAMBER OF COMMERCE


The chamber’s Public Policy Council is comprised of Greater Oak Brook member companies committed to working on behalf of the chamber’s pro-business state and congressional legislative agendas.

Through the Public Policy Council, the chamber continued to build active regional and national legislative partnerships with statewide business advocacy organizations, including the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, with new Illinois Chamber president Todd Maisch as guest speaker at the chamber’s fall legislative forum. The chamber also worked with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to educate businesses and the public about the merits of Common Core and the MarketPlace Fairness Act. The U.S. Chamber’s Director of Legislative Advocacy for Education Policy Caitlin Codella was also highlighted as guest speaker at the chamber’s legislative forum. Keynote speaker for the forum was Kristin McQueary from the Chicago Tribune Editorial Board.

In addition, the Public Policy Council joined the Banking and Financial Services Committee to establish a Business 101 and Branding Subcommittee to create video testimonial messages that help the public understand how our economy and businesses work and how they create and sustain jobs and help people.

Members of the chamber’s new Young Business Leaders group began taping fi rst-time video testimonials with the following messages: “Why I Love My Company,” “Why I Love My Job,” “Did You Know That This Is How Business Works?” and “I Love Working in Greater Oak Brook.” The chamber deeply appreciates the contributions of JSH&A in Oakbrook Terrace of branding and marketing services to create these messages and videos.

Most recently, the chamber’s Public Policy Council presented its fi rst Local Candidates Forum. The purpose of this year’s forum was to inform area business leaders about the policy positions and leadership ability of Oak Brook’s candidates for village president and trustees.

PUBLIC POLICY COUNCIL LEGISLATIVE LEADERSHIP AWARDS COMMITTEE GREATER OAK BROOK CHAMBER OF COMMERCE


The chamber’s new Legislative Leadership Awards Committee and chamber staff spent the last year gathering, tallying and evaluating the business voting records of state legislators. They then combined those records with anecdotal leadership information collected from statewide business groups to calculate final “Legislative Leadership” scores.

Four state legislators with the top legislative leadership scores were selected to be highlighted as model leaders for other legislators – and to receive special recognition awards at the chamber’s annual meeting. The awards honor these legislators for demonstrating “extraordinary leadership in supporting businesses and state economic growth.”

BANKING AND FINANCIAL SERVICES COMMITTEE

The chamber’s new Banking and Financial Services Committee accomplished its two largest goals for the year: 1) to research policy issues affecting banks and fi nancial service companies – and to develop its own banking and fi nancial services public policy agenda for inclusion in the chamber’s state and congressional legislative agendas and 2) to craft pro-banking video testimonials. Banking and fi nancial services legislative priorities are now presented and tracked on the chamber’s new Public Policy Alliance website. Members of the chamber’s Young Business Leaders group taped the fi rst set of pro-business, pro-community testimonials in early January.

HOSPITALITY AND RETAIL COMMITTEE

Thanks to support from BridgePoint Technologies, the chamber’s Hospitality and Retail Committee this year approved the development of a new responsive website that will work like a community app to drive business to local hotels, restaurants and retail stores. The web-based application will include an analytics tool to measure website traffi c, and staff will work with businesses to measure sales results. One of t he best things about the new program is that businesses may post their own promotions and events.

Chamber staff also worked with the committee to form a promotional partnership between the Greater Oak Brook hospitality and retail community and the Oak Brook soccer club to achieve new sales from the club’s 3,000 attendees. This work also involved building a ready-to-go hospitality and retail team that provides year-round promotional packages for other Greater Oak Brook event visitors.

TALENTED WORKFORCE COMMITTEE

The chamber’s Talented Workforce Committee, comprised of corporate and higher education representatives, and its Workplace Awards Subcommittee completed fi rst year strategic work that included: 1) establishing ways to share professional resources and community information with Oak Brook’s 30,000 local employees; 2) establishing awards criteria for recognizing Greater Oak Brook’s best workplaces that also incorporate best practices for attracting and retaining young talent; and 3) creating a new Young Business Leaders group to help develop future business leaders for Greater Oak Brook.

TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE

The chamber’s new Technology Committee began meeting for the fi rst time this year to identify potential strategic activities for 2015. These include: 1) establishing mentoring and other support for local technology start ups; 2) creating a local talent “Shark Tank” to attract new start ups and new technology employees to the area; and 3) researching the interests of the youngest age tier of technology talent (age 22 to 32), perhaps by organizing peer and focus groups made up of these young professionals.

The chamber’s Young Business Leaders group was established for several purposes. The group serves as a peer group for young professionals working in Greater Oak Brook who also want to increase their understanding of the economy and business and build strong leadership skills. The members of this group additionally focus on the chamber’s strategic goals to advance business interests and to attract companies and a talented workforce to Greater Oak Brook.

Young professionals with the following qualities and skills may be nominated by their employers for membership in the group: knowledge about how the U.S. economy works and the important role businesses play in creating jobs; demonstrated support of his or her employer’s business strategy and goals; strong curiosity to learn more about his or her company; strong job performance, demonstrated support of other members of his/her team – especially in building collaboration – and demonstrated leadership potential.
