Our site or Future Christchurch: APolycentric City is Sydenham, an industri-al and residential zone immediately Southo the CBD. Its urban condition is oneo isolation and disconnection, severedtwice by two main roads, Brougham and
Colombo Street. Tis causes a zoning splito industry in the North and residential inthe South, acting as two separate identi-ties that exist separated rom one another.o combat this phenomenon our urbanproposal suggests implementing mixed-use zoning, combining the residential, in-dustrial, business and retail spaces togeth-er in smaller agglomerated centres. Tisthereore allows people to live and workwithin the same area, ensuring more o acommunity sense. New centres are locatedwithin the new mixed-use zones, in threescales, Small, Medium and Large. Tis hi-erarchy o scales is generated by demandand location, as the largest center is locat-ed in the middle o the suburb, surround-ed by medium and small centres. Tecentres are located so that they are withina five minute walking distance rom one
another, turning the area into a walkableand cycle riendly neighborhood. Tisnetwork is created by green connectionsthat link each o the centres, becomingpart o a larger ramework and integrat-ing more green space throughout the area.

link Green Connection
Sydenham is an area by the central Christchurch where should has many geographical superiorities. It should have been reasonably and logically developed to be a region that has its ownlie style or icon. However, the reality o Sydenham is opposite to what it should have been. According to the newest statistics o demographics, youngsters under 20 contribute to 24 per-cent o the population in the whole Sydenham area, and people over 60 account 22 percent o the population. Tese two age groups are in the first and the second position o age groups inSydenham. Simultaneously, the statistics shows the percentage o the population holding income less than 50,000 per year is convincingly higher than the urban and national percentage.Sydenham can be defined as a relatively poor, lieless region or both youth and elderly.
In order to balance the urban structure and recreate an appropriate lie style or the people living here, the concept starts rom the green rame. Green spaces with three different scales
are provided. A big central park by Colombo Street and the city corridor is created as the new centre o Sydenham to connect CBD and Sydenham. Medium parks and small parks aredistributed in Sydenham surrounding the big park. Green links that organically connect the parks together use into the original urban tissue.
Huxley Street as a typical Sydenham lieless street locates between the big central park and a medium green space. Te geographical eature is the reason why this street is selected as thedetailing and developing object o the green link system. Te street is consistently quiet and the length o the street is out o human scale. Additionally, the street doesn’t provide enoughgathering spaces and resting spaces. Te aim or the design is to establish a connection, a link between the central park and the medium park as well as to bring people’s lie back.Te location o the current link is or driveway. Te utilization o the traffic on the street isn’t requent. According to the consideration regarding the organic connection between the twoparks, associated with the continuity o the characters o the parks and about the proposed green space master plan, the street is redefined and re-unctioned as a pure green band, a streetpark or pedestrians.
Tere are several elements that are taken into account when the design is processing. Te design considers the unction and t raffic joints among several areas and crisscrossing streets andutilize the transitional spaces to build up several activity spaces, plazas. Tese small plazas provide people enough room to rest, entertain, communicate and perorm. Te setting o theplaza by the medium park takes the contemplation o the relationship between the park and the street. A cement-made stair resting and perorming place is installed in ront the parkarea as the organic and unctional connection between the park and the street park. Also, a cement perorming stage is designed in ront o the stairs. Te ground lights surrounding thestage and stairs are responsible or the illumination o the area and the optimization o t he environment at night. In the mid-section o the street, two resting and entertaining combinedplazas are located. One is a cement installation with a southern pine squared dressed board decked stair rest place on the one side and a cement slide with grass planted on the other side.Te concrete material pavers are renovated. Instead, a sof and eco-riendly grass land is under the installation as “Green”, this concept can be shown off in different details and closes therelationship between people and the nature. In addition, kids and children may be attracted to the creativity o the installation. Tey can step up on the top o the stair and slide down tothe grass land rom another side. Te place can become an open-air cinema at night in summer. Te other plaza is built up as an invisible maze. Te plaza is decked by concrete pavers andgeometrically divided by squares and different-sized circles rom the top view. Some circles are used or the planting o t rees; some are scaled into small holes and constitute a ground oun-tain; and the rest o the circles extend out vertically and become cement benches. It’s not as same as the normal maze surrounded by hedges or other barriers. Te ountain is automaticallymanipulated. Te water spouts are switched on and off by the computer system. Tus, unpredictable spouting water, tree matrix and benches create an invisible maze or people, especiallyor children.Te mini plaza at the top o the street is another perormance place. It connects to the ootpaths to the opposite directions, indirectly limits the boundary o the green link. Apurple corridor comes up with the mini plaza to highlight the entrance o the new park. Te corridor is architecturally constructed by a radiata rame with wisteria growing on t he rame.Wisteria is a kind o climber with beautiul purple perumed flowers. Te artificial planting will create impressive natural scenery as an icon o the new park and Sydenham.
Several plants are chosen or t he park, including trees, shrubs, grasses and groundcovers. Osakazuki is the biggest tree among the plants in the park and the trees are planted beside thecycle lane as the division o the public and semipublic areas. It’s a Japanese maple tree. Te leaves o the tree become yellow during early autumn. Yellow becomes a special color o the newpark and contrasts with green. Te yellow color also can highlight the park and reminds people o t he change o seasons.
Te illustration system in the park ollows the scale o the private and the public. Small gathering and communication spaces need sof light, so ground lights are designed around theseplaces. Street lamps are or walkways.
Te most importance o the park is the conscious and unconscious experience o the park. Te construction o t he park release more space or p eople to establish an interaction amongpeople and between people and the nature. Huxley Street is part o people’s lie and the re-unction o the street contributes to the change o the lie style. In other words, it can be a triggero the creation o a new lie.

FACTORY
Factory 2.0 looks at repurposing and reactivating some o the industrial buildings rom its singular unction into lively mixed-use living andwork space. Bringing new lie to these industrial buildings becomes a method o creating new centres and activity in the current isolated north-ern Sydenham zone. Repurposing the industrial buildings in Sydenham offers to aid in the connection o the current separated zones, becominga catalyst or a renewed engagement and interaction with the neglected industrial space. It also aims to reduce the current thoroughare naturealong Colombo Street, inviting people to explore the area, particularly because o its valuable proximity to the CBD. Te project looks at oneindustrial building retrofit as an example, a large 198m long building located beside the rail line.Re-envisioning Sydenham industrial building stock in the new post-earthquake landscape becomes an important role in providing much neededhousing stock to Christchurch. Tere is an opportunity in the industrial area to offer a different urban scheme than it currently offers, particu-larly as it had been predicted that the industrial presence will decrease along the rail line over the coming years. Sydenham’s industrial spacebecomes ideal or retrofitting as it has had minimal effect rom the 2011 Earthquake, and as the buildings are largely empty rames, flexible orreconfiguration.
Tere are multiple reasons to save the existing industrial building stock, rather than simply destroying it and starting again. Firstly, much othe inner city building stock has already been destroyed, thereore it becomes important to Christchurch’s memory to try and save some o itsremaining large scale buildings. Secondly, it shows the character o Sydenham’s industrial past, particularly the actory silhouette shape, whichevokes the imagery o industry. Sydenham prides itsel on its historic past, and as much o its heritage buildings have been destroyed romthe earthquake it becomes an opportunity to embrace the areas industrial image and past. Tirdly, because the building chosen is such a largebuilding it becomes a more sustainable initiative to save the existing structure than using new resources to completely build rom the beginning.Lastly it speeds up construction time, and allows people to move in quickly as the buildings are already watertight.Te design proposal or the building becomes an example o one o Sydenham’s new proposed centres, a medium sized example in the industrialzone. Te strategies rom the urban proposals are abstracted and used in the logic or the new building. Te spatial strategy or the building istaken rom the existing structure, the gridded network o interior columns. Te housing units are ormed between this gridded ramework, inthree scales - small, medium and large. Tis allows or a diversity o the housing stock, as there is the choice between one to our bedroom units.Tese units are placed according to size in the plan, as the largest are located in the corners and intersections, the mediums along the outer pe-rimeter, and the small along the middle section.Te three scales are also used in the circulation network, creating a hierarchy o ‘roads’. Te main circulation paths connect t he building rom theoutside where it eeds people into the interior residential and second story marketplace. A North to South circulation route connects to a newproposed green connection, where other industrial buildings along the chain are proposed to be retrofitted as well. A diagonal connection linksthe building to the busiest road in Sydenham, Colombo Street, and intersects with the other large circulation route. Medium sized circulationcorridors run horizontally off o the main spaces, spanning the entire length o the building, allowing unobstructed views to each end. Te trusspattern is used in the plan as the units interior circulation acing walls mirror the same orm, breaking the linearity o the passages and encour-aging moments o exchange. Large event like staircases take people rom the Ground Floor to the Second Story marketplace above, where theresidents below sell their goods and services and where other businesses operate. It is zoned flexibly or different market activities and business-es, including caes, gallery space, and a ballet school. Tis lively market space embraces and is sympathetic to the alternative creative character othe area, allowing or niche and start-up businesses to take place. Tis top floor marketplace has a network o bridges which spans and connectsacross the circulation spaces to the different market islands. Tis system o navigation inside the building allows or clear and efficient move-ment, enticing the occupant to explore more o the spaces.
o allow light into the building because o its wide width, 53m, our courtyards have been strategically located. Tese courtyards all have differ-ent and unique gardens, including a ernery, water, palm and flower garden. Tis ensures that daylight and natural ventilation is brought into themiddle units, as they are located off o these courtyards. Tese spaces become spatial moments o ocus, navigation and orientation, while alsocommunicating to the green connection the building is situated along. Te courtyards are glazed in glass that connects to the ceiling and manyo the gardens have tall trees. Tis enables the occupants to always see a courtyard rom the public spaces, and rom the second story allows views o all our gardens operating as light wells.Te material choices o the new structure are sympathetic to t he existing building, while offering a subtle contrast. Te concrete building rameand roofing materials is kept and the new exterior walls keep the same banding quality o the original walls. Te exterior surace is re-clad inblack steel with stained black windows, keeping as much o the original structure as possible. Tis cladding choice ensures the building sustainsits mysterious industrial monolithic appearance, while minimizing the appearance o any exterior enestration. Te interior appearance is odeliberate contrast to the exterior, with the use o white concrete and clear glass, to create a lighter more open appearance. Te use o the blackexterior and light interior, as well as the courtyards, creates visual contrast and release.Reimagining the industrial building stock in the post-earthquake Christchurch could bring new lie into t he declining industrial areas, whilebecoming new hubs and centres or activity. It looks at imagining the industrial zone in a different way, and how it can reengage a disconnectedand isolated area. Te buildings scheme is developed using the same urban strategies o mixed-use, connection and different scale centres, illus-trating how the wider urban strategy can be implemented into the industrial zone and at a building scale.
