In 1925, a devastating earthquake damaged the Arlington Hotel so badly it was subsequently demolished. Two years later, the architecture firm Edwards & Plunkett was hired to design the Fox Arlington Theatre on that site to take its place. The theater and surrounding structures such as towers, paseos, and arcaded entrance loggia, were designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style and were completed in 1931. This would be the centerpiece from

which new commercial buildings would emanate, among them 1309 State St — named The Drake Building and built in 1934 — designed by the same architects that dreamt up the (Fox) Arlington Theatre. Other architects and styles (primarily Mediterranean) joined in on the development and by 1946 the 1300 block was mostly complete.
