…let us pray to the Lord.…Lord, have mercy.1. For the peace of our nation and of the world, that evil may be bound and crippled, and good order cultivated and preserved...2. For the Church of God, that it unfailingly confess the Lord’s work and willingly suffer for the well-being of its enemies...3. For the president of our nation, our state governor, and all others in positions of civil authority, that they serve faithfully and be strengthened in every good deed...

4. For the unbelieving and all those outside the Church, that our heavenly Father would create in them a living desire for the blessed crumbs of His Word that He provides so profusely and earnestly for their feeding and nourishment...5. For all pastors, that our almighty Father would sanctify such impure and fallen men for holy use in His hands, just as He has most surely justified them by His Son and called them in ordination...

…let us pray to the Lord.…Lord, have mercy.6. For all who are preparing to receive the Lord’s Supper, that with contrite, believing hearts we recognize the bread and the wine of the Holy Eucharist to be the very, true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ that was delivered up and crucified, killed, buried and raised for the forgiveness of all our sins, that we may be healed and strengthened by this gift...7. For the sick, the shut-in, the immobile, the lonely, the depressed, the mentally-ill, the trapped, the dying and all

those in disappointment, pain, anger, frailty, guilt, fear, desperation who are tempted to despair of God’s mercy and aid, including those enslaved by addictions, that God would strengthen them to wrestle, endure and hold fast His ways in the certain hope of His ongoing and future healing of body and soul...---- And now we also pray for...(open petitions)Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom pray, trusting in Your mercy, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

1 When in the hour of deepest needWe know not where to look for aid; When days and nights of anxious thoughtNo help or counsel yet have brought,

2 Then is our comfort this aloneThat we may meet before Your throneTo You, O faithful God, we cryFor rescue from our misery.

3 For You have promised, Lord, to heedYour children's cries in time of needThrough Him whose name alone is great,Our Savior and our Advocate.

4 And so we come, O God, todayAnd all our woes before You lay;For sorely tried, cast down, we stand,Perplexed by fears on ev'ry hand.

5 O from our sinsLord, turn Your face;Absolve us through Your boundless grace.Be with us in our anguish still;Free us at last from ev'ry ill.

6 So we with all our hearts each dayTo You our glad thanksgiving pay,Then walk obedient to Your WordAnd now and ever praise You, Lord

Genesis 32:22-32

Jacob Wrestles with God22 The same night he arose and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 23 He took them and sent them across the stream, and everything else that he had. 24 And Jacob was left alone. And a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day. 25 When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched his hip socket, and Jacob's hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. 26 Then he said, “Let me go, for the day has broken.” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” 27 And he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said,

“Jacob.” 28 Then he said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.” 29 Then Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” But he said,“Why is it that you ask my name?” And there he blessed him.30 So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, “For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered.” 31 The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping because of his hip. 32 Therefore to this day the people of Israel do not eat the sinew of the thigh that is on the hip socket, because he touched the socket of Jacob's hip on the sinew of the thigh.

1 Thessalonians 4:1-7A Life Pleasing to God4 Finally, then, brothers, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, just as you are doing, that you do so more and more. 2 For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. 3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; 4 that each one of you know how to

control his own body in holiness and honor, 5 not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; 6 that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. 7 For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness.

Romans 5:1-5Peace with God Through Faith5 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces

endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

Matthew 15:21-28The Faith of a Canaanite Woman21 And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. 22 And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.” 23 But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.” 24 He

answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25 But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” 26 And he answered, “It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.” 27 She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table.”28 Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter washealed instantly.

Psalm 121My Help Comes from the LORDA Song of Ascents.121 I lift up my eyes to the hills.    From where does my help come?2 My help comes from the LORD,    who made heaven and earth.3 He will not let your foot be moved;    he who keeps you will not slumber.4 Behold, he who keeps Israel    will neither slumber nor

sleep.5 The LORD is your keeper;    the LORD is your shade on your right hand.6 The sun shall not strike you by day,    nor the moon by night.7 The LORD will keep you from all evil;    he will keep your life.8 The LORD will keep    your going out and your coming in    from this time forth and forevermore.

Share Time: SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT (Reminiscere) Genesis 32:22–321 Thessalonians 4:1–7or Romans 5:1–5Matthew 15:21–28 Holding God to His Word Jacob wrestled with God; he would not let Him go until he received a blessing from Him (Gen. 32:22–32). So it was with the Canaanite woman. Though Jesus seemed to ignore and reject her, she continued to call upon His name and look to Him for help (Mt. 15:21–28). Even when the Lord called her a little dog, she held on to Him in faith and would not let Him wriggle out of His words: “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” This Gentile woman shows herself to be a true Israelite, who struggles with God and man in Christ and prevails. “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire” (Mt. 15:27–28). This is the sanctifying will of God (1 Thess. 4:1–7)—to test your faith in order that it may be refined and strengthened. For tribulation produces perseverance; perseverance, character; character, hope. And hope in Christ does not disappoint (Rom. 5:1–5).

Sing it!

1 Jesus, lover of my soul,Let me to thy bosom fly,While the nearer waters roll,While the tempest still is high;Hide me, oh, my Savior, hide,Till the storm of life is past;Safe into the haven guide,O receive my soul at last.

2 Other refuge have I none,Hangs my helpless soul on thee,Leave, ah! leave me not alone,Still support and comfort me;All my trust on thee is stayed,All my help from thee I bring,Cover my defenseless headWith the shadow of thy wing.

3 Thou, oh, Christ, art all I want,More than all in thee I find;Raise the fallen, cheer the faint,Heal the sick, and lead the blind,Just and holy is thy Name,I am all unrighteousness!Vile and full of sin I am,Thou art full of truth and grace.

4 Plenteous grace with thee is found,Grace to pardon all my sin;Let the healing streams abound,Make and keep me pure within;Thou of life the Fountain art,Freely let me take of thee,Spring thou up within my heart,Rise to all eternity.

Exodus 8:16-21The Third Plague: Gnats16 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the earth, so that it may become gnats in all the land of Egypt.’” 17 And they did so. Aaron stretched out his hand with his staff and struck the dust of the earth, and there were gnats on man and beast. All the dust of the earth became gnats in all the land of Egypt. 18 The magicians tried by their secret arts to produce gnats, but they could not. So there were gnats on man and beast. 19 Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God.” But Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he would not listen to them, as the Lord had said. The Fourth Plague: Flies20 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Rise up early in the morning and present yourself to Pharaoh, as he goes out to the water, and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord, “Let my people go, that they may serve me. 21 Or else, if you will not let my people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies on you and your servants and your people, and into your houses. And the houses of the Egyptians shall be filled with swarms of flies, and also the ground on which they stand.

Jeremiah 26:1-15Jeremiah Threatened with Death26 In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came from the Lord: 2 “Thus says the Lord: Stand in the court of the Lord's house, and speak to all the cities of Judah that come to worship in the house of the Lord all the words that I command you to speak to them; do not hold back a word. 3 It may be they will listen, and every one turn from his evil way, that I may relent of the disaster that I intend to do to them because of their evil deeds. 4 You shall say to them, ‘Thus says theLord: If you will not listen to me, to walk in my law that I have set before you, 5 and to listen to the words of my servants the prophets whom I send to you urgently, though you have not listened, 6 then I will make this house like Shiloh, and I will make this city a curse for all the nations of the earth.’”7 The priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the Lord.8 And when Jeremiah had finished speaking all that the Lordhad commanded him to speak to all the people, then the priests and the prophets and all the people laid hold of him, saying, “You shall die! 9 Why have you prophesied in the name of the Lord, saying, ‘This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate, without inhabitant’?” And all the people gathered around Jeremiah in the house of theLord.10 When the officials of Judah heard these things, they came up from the king's house to the house of the Lord and took their seat in the entry of the New Gate of the house of theLord. 11 Then the priests and the prophets said to the officials and to all the people, “This man deserves the sentence of death, because he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears.”12 Then Jeremiah spoke to all the officials and all the people, saying, “The Lord sent me to prophesy against this house and this city all the words you have heard. 13 Now thereforemend your ways

and your deeds, and obey the voice of theLord your God, and the Lord will relent of the disaster that he has pronounced against you. 14 But as for me, behold, I am in your hands. Do with me as seems good and right to you. 15 Only know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood upon yourselves and upon this city and its inhabitants, for in truth the Lord sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears.”

Ephesians 5:1-9Walk in Love5 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 Andwalk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, afragrant offering and sacrifice to God.3 But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousnessmust not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. 4 Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. 5 For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do not become partners with them; 8 for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true),

Luke 11:14-28Jesus and Beelzebul14 Now he was casting out a demon that was mute. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the people marveled. 15 But some of them said, “He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of demons,” 16 while others,to test him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven.17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household falls. 18 And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul. 19 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 20 But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are safe; 22 but when one stronger than he attacks him and overcomes him, he takes away hisarmor in which he trusted and divides his spoil. 23 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.Return of an Unclean Spirit24 “When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and finding none it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’25 And when it comes, it finds the house swept and put in order. 26 Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there. And the last state of that person is worse than the first.”True Blessedness27 As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!” 28 But he said,“Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God andkeep it!”

Psalm 136:1-16His Steadfast Love Endures Forever136 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,    for his steadfast love endures forever.2 Give thanks to the God of gods,    for his steadfast love endures forever.3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords,    for his steadfast love endures forever;4 to him who alone does great wonders,    for his steadfast love endures forever;5 to him who by understanding made the heavens,    for his steadfast love endures forever;6 to him who spread out the earth above the waters,    for his steadfast love endures forever;7 to him who made the great lights,    for his steadfast love endures forever;8 the sun to rule over the day,    for his steadfast love endures forever;9 the moon and stars to rule over the night,    for his steadfast love endures forever;10 to him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt,    for his steadfast love endures forever;11 and brought Israel out from among them,    for his steadfast love endures forever;12 with a strong hand and an outstretched arm,    for his steadfast love endures forever;13 to him who divided the Red Sea in two,    for his steadfast love endures forever;14 and made Israel pass through the midst of it,    for his steadfast love endures forever;15 but overthrew Pharaoh and his host in the Red Sea,    for his steadfast love endures forever;16 to him who led his people through the wilderness,    for his steadfast love endures forever;

Psalm 4Answer Me When I CallTo the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. A Psalm of David.4 Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness!    You have given me relief when I was in distress.    Be gracious to me and hear my prayer!2 O men, how long shall my honor be turned into shame?    How long will you love vain words and seek afterlies? Selah3 But know that the Lord has set apart the godly for himself;    the Lord hears when I call to him.4 Be angry, and do not sin;    ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent. Selah5 Offer right sacrifices,    and put your trust in the Lord.6 There are many who say, “Who will show us some good?    Lift up the light of your face upon us, O Lord!”7 You have put more joy in my heart    than they have when their grain and wine abound.8 In peace I will both lie down and sleep;    for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.
