September 27th, 2015— 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time 3
At that time, John said to Jesus, "Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us." Jesus replied, "Do not prevent him. There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the
same time speak ill of me." - Mk 9:38-39
Excerpts from the Lectionary for Mass ©2001, 1998, 1970 CCD.
Dear Friends, Next Sunday, October 4, Bishop Joseph Pepe will join us and preside at the 8 AM Mass. During Mass he will conduct the Rite of Installation of the Pastor. This ritual in the Church is usually conducted by the local Bishop and serves as the official process of welcoming a new Pastor to a parish community. While I have been here for some time, Bishop Pepe recently contacted me and asked to come on October 4 to visit our parish community and preside at this Rite. I hope you will be able to join us and welcome Bishop Pepe to St. Thomas More. It seems appropriate that next Sunday is welcome Sunday so you will also be able to stop in the Community Center for donuts, coffee and a chance for conversation and fellowship with other members of St. Thomas More.
Speaking of comings and goings, I want to share with you the news that Connie Clough, our Director of Adult Faith Formation and Director of Liturgy for the past 18 years, has accepted a new position with the Diocese of Las Vegas. Effective October 1, 2015, Connie will become the Director of Faith Formation for the Diocese of Las Vegas. For nearly 18 years, Connie has been a staff member at St. Thomas More. Her contributions to our staff and parish community have helped to form us in a truly Vatican II model of church that has enriched the faith lives of our entire community. While we will miss her wisdom and expertise, I am sure she will be sharing those same gifts with the larger church in the Diocese of Las Vegas. I want to thank Connie for all her ministry over these past 18 years. We are a better faith community because of her presence and leadership. Please join me in wishing her well and complete success in this new adventure in her life.
Christmas in the Fall is coming to St. Thomas More. Next weekend, we kick off this largest social ministry program of our community designed to help nonprofit organizations in the valley. Beginning next week, paper angels will be posted on boards outside of church; each represents a specific request for a gift for a needy person or family. This is an annual project here at St. Thomas More and truly provides for the needs of so many in our community. Please consult the bulletin to see even more details about Christmas in the Fall.
As September rolls over into October this week I am also conscious that we have transitioned into the season of autumn. I hope you enjoy these days as we not only transition seasons but we also transition temperatures---praise God!!
Have a great week and God’s blessings to you. Fr. Mick Egan, CSV

STM CATECHUMENATE Inquiry Session
Monday September 28th, 7PM
Have you been thinking about
becoming Catholic? Or perhaps you are
simply interested in learning more about Catholic
beliefs and practices? Do you need more time to
discern your initial decision to explore what the
Catholic Church offers?
St. Thomas More Catholic Community
cordially invites you to the initial meetings for
“Inquirers” on the second and fourth Mondays of the
month. The next Inquiry session will be Monday, September 28th, at 7:00 PM in the Chapel.
TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN
ORDINARY TIME
NOT AGAINST US Like Moses before
him, Jesus corrects his
disciples’ misunderstanding
of the gift of the Spirit. They saw people who were
not of their company casting out demons and doing
other works such as Jesus had done. Jesus points out
that no one who does a good deed in his name can
be opposed to him at the same time! He goes on to
point out the importance of the “little ones”: the poor,
simple people, children, the meek ones who are not
important in the world. It is to them that he was sent,
not to the wealthy and the self-righteous. He
underscores the importance of small works done in
faith, as well as big works like driving out demons.
“Anyone who gives you a cup of water . . . because
you belong to Christ . . . will surely not lose his
reward” (Mark 9:41). God builds the coming reign
little by little in our actions, however small and
unassuming, when they are done out of love of God
and neighbor. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

SAFE ENVIRONMENT MINISTRY
Are you a Medical Professional, Doctor, Nurse, EMT or Paramedic? If so, would you like to be on our Medical Response Team?
It’s very simple: you sign-up for the Masses of your choice each month and sit in a designated pew. If there is a medical emergency, a member of our Lead Team will call upon you to use your skills to attend to the sick or injured person until the Paramedics arrive. Please contact Ken Rosania at 702-361-3022.
THE PRESENCE OF GOD
In all our thoughts and actions we ought to remember the presence of God, and
account all lost in which we think not of God.
—St. Bernard of Clairvaux
St. Thomas More's Bereavement Ministry will begin the Fall/Winter sessions for the Bereavement Support Group on Thursday, October
1, 2015 at 6:30 PM in Room #8B of the Community Center. This first night will be an Information and
Registration night to learn about the program offered at St. Thomas More. All are Welcome. The hope of this ministry is to bring together those who are grieving to share tears, stories, discussion, prayer and reflection in order to not walk the journey of grief alone. This ministry will continue to meet on subsequent Thursday evenings until mid January. If you have any questions, please email Deacon Mike at [email protected], or call the parish office at 702-361-8840, for further details.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
From its earliest days, the Church has had an interest in the education of young people. In ancient Rome, teachers of boys had to resign their pos t s in order to become catechumens, since the education of
boys was so keyed to the lore and worship of the gods. In other ages, public education has been so attuned to other values that creative solutions have arisen. In late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Ireland, government schools had a goal of “Anglicizing” the Irish in culture and religion. Most Irish Catholics opted out in favor of “hedge schools.” In these largely secret schools, meeting not just in the shadow of hedges but also in cottages and barns throughout Ireland, schoolmasters provided eager students with a classical education grounded in Greek and Latin, Irish literature, the banned Gaelic language, and the catechism of the Church. The so-called penal laws forbade Catholics from teaching young people publicly or privately, and “civil disobedience” ruled the day. In 1826, a British government study showed that of half a million Irish children enrolled in schools, 403,000 were in hedge schools! A woman named Nano Nagle defied the law by opening schools for the poor. Eventually her companions became the Presentation Sisters. A layman named Edmund Rice, inspired by her courage, founded the Irish Christian Brothers for the same purpose. By 1820, the situation eased, since Irish Catholics had shown that they would defy any law that diminished their love of learning and threatened their faith.

Altar Team Members Needed
St. Thomas More incorporates members of the Parish to participate in the Liturgy by
setting the Altar and bringing the gifts forward. We need more volunteers at all Masses, and a reaching out to you to consider serving as a volunteer. What type of commitment are we asking for? We need you serve at one Mass per month, preferably the Mass you already attend. Who do we need? Every member of the Parish is eligible to serve. Families often work together, but you can sign up with friends or all by yourself (we will put you with a team). Why do we use Altar Teams? It is very symbolic of the earliest church to have its members participate representing the entire community. If you would like to demonstrate your faith through good works as St. James calls us to do, please contact Deacon Bob at 702.300.1602 or send him an email at [email protected]. Finally, we will have a training session for ALL NEW and CURRENT ALTAR TEAM MEMBERS on Saturday, October 3, at 11:00 AM in the Church.
For your own sake, please be considerate…
For your own sake, please be considerate and NOT park in the spaces reserved for the customers of
the adjacent shopping center. In the past several vehicles received written warnings...citations will be issued in the future ($187.00 per offense) or the vehicle will be towed at the owner’s expense.
PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN THE ADJACENT SHOPPING PLAZA.
A PRAYERFUL INVITATION
Looking for some peaceful, quiet time with the Lord?
The chapel is open from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM Monday through Thursday and Friday from 7:30 AM to 12 noon. Votive candles are available.
MINISTRY TO THE HOMEBOUND
Our parish is in need of additional volunteers to take Communion to those who are homebound due to illness, age, or disability. This ministry of
visitation and care is vital to help the homebound participate in the Eucharist and to remain connected to the parish community. Those who bring Communion also bring a friendly face, news of the parish, a concerned listener and often a personal care and compassion that translates into the visible presence of Christ.
If you would be willing to give some time for this ministry, please call the Coordinator of Homebound Ministry, Dona (456-4830) or the parish office (361-3022).

Pope Francis tells us, “Every consecrated person is a gift for the People of God on its journey.” Many of us can recall special women or men religious who played meaningful roles in our lives. This may have been the
sister who taught us in second grade, supporting our educational development, or perhaps it was the religious brother who led us on retreat and nourished our spiritual growth.
As a way of expressing our appreciation for the many sacrifices and the many gifts these men and women have shared with us, a special Mass honoring our Religious Priests, Sisters and Brothers will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at 5:30 PM. at Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic Church, 3050 Alta Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89107. Bishop Pepe invites all to join in this celebration of thanksgiving.

AROUND THE DIOCESE
Sharing the Gospel
If a girl is doing good things and helps you to do good things for God, she is a good friend. If a boy reminds you of how much God loves you, he is a good friend. If a child really is being helpful, don't push him or her away because he or she is not part of your family or church. God is very happy when you accept others even when they are not like you.
Prayer
Lord, help me understand that everyone is part of your family.
Mission for the Week
I will invite a friend to come to church with me and my family.
