Choice providers provide choice outcomes Among best practices in care, a key component is locating primary care physicians and specialists associated with the best outcomes, and utilizing them, as allowed by law, to treat workplace injuries. Utilizing provider benchmarking can ensure quality care for injured employees, which leads to quicker return to productivity and ultimately better claim outcomes. Specialized workers’ compensation telemedicine networks can play an important role as a new tool in this area. In addition, by proactively and preemptively identifying and avoiding fraudulent providers, costs can be impacted by millions of dollars. We will share the latest information and strategies for getting to the right providers for the best care.

Navigating the intersection of ADA, FMLA, leave and comp How can human resource and risk professionals successfully achieve compliance with the overlapping and ever-complex employment laws related to disability, leave of absence, workers’ compensation and accommodation? With the many nuances of federal laws like the ADA and FMLA and changing state mandates, employers should plan strategically in order to smoothly navigate rules and regulations and protect themselves from compliance fines, penalties and lawsuits. As part of our discussion, we will discuss trends and answer common questions to help make sense of leave of absence and accommodation laws, and share tried and true practices to help overcome challenges and implement valuable strategies.

The self-service boom: What’s next? New technology is reshaping how we connect and communicate. Once thought to be cold and impersonal, technology is redefining our expectations and how we view a quality customer experience. Today’s mobile user’s expectations are firmly grounded in the general consumer experience – they want to have goods, services and support at their fingertips, when and how they want them. It is no surprise that new tech innovations are also reshaping the claims experience as we know it. In the risk and benefits industry, at the center of these advancements remains one constant – the injured or ill employee. Technologies making a lasting impact will be those designed to improve and enhance the overall employee experience associated with the unanticipated and unfortunate workplace event or family health crisis. Join in this futuristic discussion of what is on the horizon that will improve consumer experience and produce results for employers and employees alike.

Not your dad’s liability risks The realm of liability risks has changed rapidly over the past decade. Areas like cyber have become somewhat of a “when” instead of “if” for many risk managers. Driverless cars, the use of robotics and artificial intelligence are being developed in part to make our society safer and more secure. But is that true? What are the risks of these new technologies to businesses and consumers? How do they open up a business to liability? Join us for a discussion on how to manage the changing liability risk environment.

Mind-blowing insights into the future | Joshua Cooper Ramo | co-CEO | Kissinger Associates

Removing complexity for the consumer through a whole health approach Imagine a single resource for all questions related to group health, workers’ compensation and disability claims, leave of absence concerns and clinical management from well-care to sick-care. Because healthcare can be complex and stressful, it’s very difficult for employees and their family members to know how to navigate all of the programs and health-related benefits their employer offers – and know who to call for what. And because so many benefits are dependent upon one another, but not necessarily integrated, a plan member may have to go to multiple resources to get their questions answered. Join a transformative discussion and learn how simplifying the complex requires new thinking and, above all, putting the consumer first.

The unicorn: A holistic approach to IDM Is the integration of disability, absence and workers’ compensation solutions back on the minds of employers? How can we break down barriers and build bridges between human resources and risk management to create a better model for managing employee health and productivity? Will an integrated approach increase employee satisfaction and engagement, reduce claim durations and lost workdays, and decrease claim costs? What are the barriers (real or perceived) to developing a singular approach to risk and benefits management? Join this esteemed panel to learn how they have reached across the aisle to create a bipartisan approach for the benefit of their employee populations.

Litigation: Strategies for avoidance and mitigation The cost of litigation to American employers continues to be a common concern. In the midst of the discussion on litigation avoidance and liability controls, what can we also do as an industry to make the system and the legal process less costly and more efficient to promote resolution? We will talk about how we can create practical solutions to this issue, regardless of the type of risk.

Metrics that matter: How we measure program success As technology provides a just-in-time look into areas like exposure, trends by specific geography, employee demographics and durations, answering the question of “What do we do with this information?” is a critical part of a successful program. Learn how to use data to drive program performance and change. We’ll cover areas like the consumer and customer experience in the claim process, how to measure “outcomes,” and how to use the information to drive your financial and customer service results.

Return to work programs: Consistent application Returning to work after an injury or illness can be difficult. Keys to ensuring success in the process include clear and steady communication, defined expectations and consistent application of the process for all employees. We will discuss options for getting engaged with employees early in the process, strategies to ensure consistent application of return to work programs, the ADA interactive process, transitional return to work, and ways employers are communicating to ensure they’ve built an ideal program, compliant across their organizations.

Tapping into talent: Gain, train and retain employees Many industries today share a similar dilemma: how to bridge the talent gap and retain valued workers. As seasoned professionals retire, recruiting new workers to take their place can be a challenge. Leveraging technology to improve business operations is vital to attracting talent. Understanding the unique value each individual brings to achieving the shared mission and goals of the organization encourages colleagues of all ages and work styles to deliver excellence every day. Setting clear, realistic expectations from the outset and keeping the lines of communication open show all colleagues that they have a voice and the organization is listening. In this session we will discuss strategies to attract talent, unique benefits that retain employees, and how to engage the diverse nature of today’s workforce.

Decision optimization: It’s a game changer Decision optimization does more than just reveal meaningful trends in claims data. The effective use of analytics can help change the course of a claim. The ability to use book of business data to drive decisions ultimately leads to smarter outcomes. Using this analytical approach, it is possible to harness the value of information to prompt different actions at the right time, resulting in continuous improvement and better overall satisfaction. Employer-specific modeling can be used to identify claims in litigation, large losses and claims with potential for extended disability duration. These models contain custom interventions based on pre-determined criteria. Looking beyond the numbers and having the ability to interpret the information associated with managing 2.6 million claims a year is game-changing. In this session, explore how decision optimization and book of business data can be applied for the advancement and improvement of virtually any claims program.

Broaden your mind: How inclusive design can change the world | Elise Roy

Rising above the epidemic All too often, we see the effects of chronic pain and addiction trickling down to our workforces and our communities. What can we do to address the epidemic that is different and impactful? One side of the coin is tried and true prescription intervention and utilization review, where allowed, but the other side should be more personal. Safe and effective methods for treatment and recovery can benefit from support. We can do this with the help of behavioral health specialists to help remove barriers, a pain coaching process with employees and an overall approach to treat the whole person. We can also explore the viability of alternative pain treatments. We must think bigger and dig deeper to develop personalized plans to help employees address the issues preventing their recovery and help them find new ways to return to work and to life.

The alphabet soup of government compliance Many recent industry-related regulatory changes and others on the horizon will introduce additional compliance requirements for employers on the federal, state and municipal levels. Some of these legislative updates and rule changes will become effective soon; others were announced more recently and are still pending final approval. We will discuss key changes including OSHA’s electronic reporting requirement, new liability Medicare set-aside arrangements (LMSAs) and no-fault Medicare set-aside arrangements (NFMSAs) announced by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), changing paid parental and family leave laws and more.

Improving the claims experience and empowering the consumer Nearly all businesses have interest in improving the consumer experience. Negative experiences can result in loss of business and – in the case of claims – a potential loss in productivity. But, a positive experience, where we treat the person the way they want to be treated, can reduce friction, confusion and duration, and improve overall satisfaction, as well as the bottom line. Whatever you call it – consumer or claimant experience – communication and engagement are the keys. Learn from a team of experts how the shift in approach can impact morale, compliance and return to work goals.

Through the looking glass: Claims technologies and innovations As technology advances, it’s easy to imagine how quickly the daily reality of risk and benefits management will change. Every day, we are presented with new possibilities for impacting claims – but also new potential risks. Employers have access to more data than ever before and are better equipped to take action, thanks to smarter systems that utilize machine learning and data modeling. Doctor’s office waiting rooms may become a thing of the past as telemedicine and remote patient monitoring become more readily accepted options in treatment. Looking ahead, telepresence could expand to include the use of video chat for recorded statements, and personalized video will also become a more common tool in delivering customized claim explanations. Telematics and artificial intelligence are already impacting the liability claims process and will continue to evolve. Drones, which can now be used in surveillance or property claims investigations, may one day be used to transport settlement packages, time-sensitive correspondence – or even people. We will explore a wide array of technology advancements and their potential impact on claims today and into the future.
