It’s hard to believe that our sea-son is almost over. Many of our friends and neighbors will be leav-ing for their northern homes. It seems like they just got here. Our wonderful volunteers filled our season with great events, wonder-ful entertainment and just plain fun. If you missed the pancake breakfast, you missed something special. Over 250 people enjoyed a wonderful meal cooked and served by our volunteer “resident chefs”. (This was really a busy weekend.) With a full stomach, it was back to Trash and Treasures in case I missed something the day before. A change of shoes and I was playing golf in the Superinten-dent’s Revenge. (Paul, Ryan and Matt ReALLY DID get revenge). It was home to grab a sandwich, then on to our professional show, Donna & Dunning. This special day was just one example of the many activities made possible by our volunteers. There really is something for everyone.

The wall is on schedule as I write this article; they have cleared land on Garden Boulevard, in-stalled a temporary security fence, and begun construction of footers for the wall. The section on De-Navarra Parkway should be com-pleted by May 24, 2013. It looks like we should plan a party in June to celebrate.

Our attorney has sent copies of the Prospectus 10 lawsuit to the first group of individuals (involved in the lawsuit) for confirmation. We are delaying the filing in the hopes that the Tara Woods case will be decided. Bart DeGraaf is heading up our Legal Committee. If you have questions regarding P.10 or think you received it in er-ror, please give Bart a call.

Some of you have expressed concern regarding the resignations on the Board of Directors. Direc-tor, Gloria Buzanis moved to Bra-denton to be close to her brother.

Betty Wright, Secretary is mov-ing to Texas to be close to her

daughter due to health reasons. Bart DeGraaf, Vice President has resigned from the Board but will Chair the Legal and Insurance Committees. We will miss these wonderful people who gave their time and talent to our Del Tura Community. We wish them well in their new homes and adventures. Lastly, I will be resigning from the board as soon as a new president is appointed. Steve and I have de-cided to move to the Tampa area as both his brother and my daughter live there. We have loved living in Del Tura for the last thirteen years. My time on the board and as your president will always be special to me. Getting to know all of you, sharing laughs and even a few tears---the friendships will always be treasured. Please welcome to the Board, Donna Burns Phillips, and Kevin Wilcox. Both are full time residents and known for their volunteer work here in Del Tura. Paula will assume the duties of the Secretary.

Now on a personal note, a spe-cial thank you to all who sent cards and called me regarding my hus-band Steve’s back surgery. He is doing well and glad the surgery is over. J.D. Cat has lost a pound, (Only because I have found new places to hide his treats). His diet continues, Steve will never be able to pick him up and I will have to have back surgery from picking him up. Twenty-one pounds is just too much for a cat!

Look for J.D. and myself in the exercise room on the treadmill, if I don’t see you there, I’ll see you at coffee.

St. Paddy’s Day PartyDEL TURA

By Ruth Ann Blevins

For the last few years “Big” Mike Tally and “Buffalo” Bob Franz have hosted their annual St. Paddy’s Day Party. Approximately 250 friends attended this event held on Friday, March 8. Nine cooks - Jane Glancy, elaine Fitzgibbons, Diane Furlong, Jeanie Furlong, Bev Sunich, Ginger Kacmarski, Loretta Megan, Lorna Callan and Lucy Schaefer - prepared 220 pounds of corn beef. Many others brought dishes to pass and desserts. Preparing the “huge” corn beef sandwiches were Les Strat-ton, Bob Fitzgibbons, Joe Furlong, Tim Meegan, Mickey Kacmarski, Fred Furlong and Bob Franz. John

Shearer provided music and song for part of the evening. (If I missed anyone, please see Bob.) It was a fantastic job by everyone. A good time was had by all.

As in years past, Bob and Mike donated all proceeds from the raffle tickets sold – this year donations were made as follows: $300.00 to Avow Hospice in memory of Mike’s sister and Bob’s wife, Mau-reen; $300.00 to the Susan G. Ko-men for the Cure Golf Tournament; $300.00 to the Notre Dame High School endowment Fund in mem-ory of Tom Doyle; and $300.00 to Avow Hospice in memory of Don Wiegand, Joe Lynch, Stan Jaeger, Roy Martin and Norm Sewick.

May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be ever at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face and the rain fall softly on your fields. And until we meet again,

may God hold you in the hollow of his hand.

“Another opening, another show!”

As the 2012-2013 season of shows comes to a close, it is al-ready time to think about the shows that will be presented next year. Cathy Wallace, Chairperson of the entertainment Committee, states, “My hard-working commit-tee members have already booked the shows for the 2013-2014 sea-son.”

For your planning purposes, mark your calendars.

November 9, 2013:Swinging Divas

January 18, 2014:Mary Ellen Hooper and Glen Johnson

February 22, 2014:Atlantic City Boys

March 22, 2014:Back Home Again

We hope you will plan to attend all four of these wonderful shows.

Cathy and the committee also encourage you all to attend the April 20, 2013, dance, which fea-tures Mike Glean, whom several Del Turians recommended after seeing him at various restaurants and clubs in the area. Ticket sales for this dance start on Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at 7:30 a.m. before Coffee. Ticket price is $5.00. The first day of sale is for HOA mem-bers only. Remaining tickets will be on sale at 7:30 a.m. on April 9 and 16. A reminder that this dance is HOA sponsored, and there are no refunds.

Cathy is committed to offer-ing dances during the off-season for those who remain in Del Tura year round. The only way it is pos-sible to do this is if those who re-main here support these off-season dances. Upcoming dances sched-uled are:

July 13, 2013: Karen Dee and Danny

September 13, 2013:Eric

Additionally, the Halloween Dance will be held on October 26, 2013 and will feature Greg Miller and his seven-piece band.

Cathy also wants you to know that “due to popular demand,” Brylcream has been booked to perform at the 2014 Valentine’s Dance, and she is working on booking the Del Prados for the St. Patrick’s Dance in 2014. Since both Brylcream and the Del Pra-dos are unavailable for New Year’s eve, the Committee is continuing to attempt to book an act that will provide us with a show and dance that will rate five stars.

Cathy and the Committee want to thank all who have supported the shows and dances this year. The Del Tura audiences definitely rate five stars.

Do not hesitate to contact Cathy with questions, comments, and suggestions.

I know it is early, but I have already received the reservation form and I would like to reserve a block of seats early in order to get choice seating. If you go back home and are interested, please

call me with your northern address and phone number and email ad-dress so I can keep in touch. Hope you decide to come with us.

This is a Christmas Spectacular you won’t want to miss. I guar-antee you will have a great day filled with wonderful music, sing-ing, dancing and a most wonder-ful ending. I have a DVD of last year’s show, and if you would like to borrow it just give me a call.

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Golf Tournament was held on March 16, 2013. As the tour-nament was held after the deadline for articles to be submitted for the Tower, therefore all winners, amount of money raised, and pic-tures will be reported in the May issue.

One hundred and fifty six (156) golfers participated in the “Brag-ging Rights Only” 4 -person scramble golf tournament. The morning started with registration and continental breakfast. each player received a “Goodie Bag.” Pink Ribbon Mulligans, 50/50, and Raffle tickets were available for purchase. Six new golf bags were donated for the closest to the pin prizes held on all three courses for men (3 West, 3 South and 3 North) and ladies (8 West, 7 South and 6 North). Winners of the clos-est to the pin will be in the May issue of The Tower. In addition, the winners of the Co-ed Team, Ladies Team and Men’s team will be in the May Tower.

This year M&B Travel/Gol-fAhoy sponsored two Hole-in-One prizes; both are ten day VIP land AND cruise packages including three days at Doral (or compa-rable) AND seven day western Caribbean with golf in three ports. Designated Hole-In-One holes are 6 South and 8 North. Both cours-

es have identical prizes and both may be won in the tournament. each player will have one chance. M&B Travel/GolfAhoy is a cruise travel agency with a specialty for golf cruises. In case you are won-dering what M&B stands for, it is our very own Marlene and Bart DeGraaf.

Many thanks to all the ladies who provided goodies for the continental breakfast before golf. Lunch following golf was pro-vided by the Fountain Grill - ham, turkey and chicken salad wraps with all the trimmings and pasta salad, with chocolate sheet cake for desert. Ice tea was also pro-vided. Special thanks to our food servers - Jayleen and Pete Ruffalo; their service was invaluable.

A special thanks to my Co-chair, Joyce Cuffe; and course photogra-pher Paula Lafreniere. Pictures taken on the course and winners will be submitted for the May is-sue of The Tower.

I cannot thank enough all of the volunteers for helping make this event a success - parking lot at-tendants, Dave Blevins, Ron Flu-ett, Dave Denman, John McKeen, Mike Overholser, Joe Mikesh, John Difillippo, “cart barn em-ployees”, registration table, Gail Flynn, Lynne Miller, Ruth Wedge and Ann Degrande; mulligan and raffle tables, Marianne Denman, Maria Buco, Sandy Rolando, Penny Mikesh, Joyce Cuffe, Peg-

gy Deems, elaine Deraney; Deb-bie Overholser and all the ones who just stepped in where help was needed. Last, but certainly not least, special thanks to Paul Taggert, Director of Golf; Ryan Gilbert, Head Golf Professional; Mike Ulhich, as well as Shirley, Scott and Steve for all of their help and assistance. I apologize if I have forgotten anyone.

A very special thanks to every-one who participated in the 2013 Susan G. Komen for the Cure Golf Tournament. It is everyone’s dedi-cation and hard work that helped make this event a success. We look forward to seeing everyone next year.

All proceeds will stay in South-west Florida and benefit our local Komen for the Cure Affiliate.

To make a donation only, make check payable to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

DEL TURA Prestigious Award

By Dianne Conlon

Rich Symes was the recipient of Lee County RSVP Outstand-ing Volunteer Award. Lee County RSVP selected four recipients for the year 2013. Rich Symes of Del Tura was the first to receive his award, FISH of Del Tura is so proud of Rich. Anyone who knows Rich and the hard work he does for our community realizes he should have 1000 rewards.

Thanks Rich you deserve this recognition.

Below is the letter submitted by Betty Scheetz in behalf of Rich Symes.

January 7, 2013RSVP OUTSTANDING VOLUNTeeR AWARD,

What can I say about Richard Symes other than he is a blessing to our Community.

He has been a FISH member for 7 years. He takes care of our medi-cal supplies and equipment. Our community provides wheel chairs,

walkers, commodes, crutches, canes etc. to anyone who need them all they need to do is call Rich.

Rich keeps all the records of what is in and out. He also keeps everything in good working order.

The “above and beyond” duty is he is on call 24-7 and encourages anyone who is in need to call him, at any hour.

Not only does he do for Del Tura FISH, he also does for his church, and he is a first-responder in case of a hurricane or disaster for our community. He is always there with a smile and words of encour-agement.

I truly hope you consider him for the outstanding volunteer award. He does more than most people even know without wanting or expecting recognition.

I believe it’s time for him to be recognized. He truly deserves it.

Respectfully Submitted,

Betty Scheetz, Administrator of FISH of Del Tura

and neighbors who sent me cards, well wishes, and prayers during my hospital stay and recupera-tion. I miss you all.

Alice BarrettThank you All

Thank you, Joyce Cuffe, and the HOA Board members, for choosing us as your “Couple of the Year”.

It is such an honor, especially since there are so many people in our community who also deserve to be recognized.

Thank you everyone for the “congratulations” and “job well done.” When you do things from the heart, you never expect to be recognized for it. It just comes naturally to want to help.

We live in a wonderful com-munity and as long as we all work together, it will stay the best place to live.

God Bless and thank you all again,

Betty and Dave ScheetzBittersweet

On a bittersweet note, after 15 years, we are leaving Del Tura and our many dear friends and acquaintances. It has been an in-credible and enlightening experi-ence living here among so many wonderful, generous and talented people.

So, with sadness we leave you. In looking at our future, we have taken the necessary step for what we expect to be our last move. Our goal is to enjoy every mo-ment of every day at Shell Point

When I arrived at one of the Good Timers’ dinners recently, I noted how many people were hav-ing conversations regarding their favorite TV shows, so I decided to take a poll to see what shows were the most popular with our members. I discovered that Danc-ing with the Stars, Downton Ab-bey, and NCIS were the winners. Drama, comedy, news, and talk shows were all included in the fa-vorites. Movies, in general, were also a favorite of many members including Jan VanAmburg, Marge Applebaum, Barbara Simmons, and Judy Fehrman. Other favorites included: Revenge, Anna Gessner; Shark Tank, Marge Nosach; Mike and Molly, Gerri Camburn; Blue Bloods, Pat Gilmour and Lillian Klopp; Judge Judy, Jean Cochran, and Gloria ellis; Nashville, Barba-ra Boyd; The Today Show, Millie Ciccorelli; Jeopardy, Joan Whaley and Alice Harris; Masterpiece Theater, Alice Gash; The View, Nancy Skorlinski; Grey’s Anato-my, Lorna Callan; and The Good Wife, Susan Maginn. The fact that

there are such a variety of favorites makes for lively conversation.

We celebrated the March birth-days of Debra Alt, Lyn Bailey, Gerri Camburn, Pat Clemens, Bev Krueger, Mo MacKinnon, Fran Pouliot, Kathleen Quigley, and Barbara Simmons at our annual jaunt to Clancy’s for the “wearin’ of the green.” Our hostesses were Alice Harris and Gerri Camburn. The corned beef was yummy.

The April birthday bash will be hosted by Alice Gash and date, place, etc. will be announced at the April 2 meeting. After the meeting, the sign-up sheet will be placed on the bulletin board. Members celebrating their birthdays at this dinner are Jean Cochran and Alice Gash.

Our annual Golf Cart Road Rally will be held on Wednes-day, April 17, at 3:00 p.m. esther Kuntz, a past chairperson of this event, will serve as consultant to Pat Gilmour and Bonnie Sharp-less who will chair this event for the first time and prepare the list of items our “Sherlocks” must find. Those wanting to attend can sign up for this activity at the April 2 meeting as well. If more informa-tion is needed, please call Pat at 731-9561, or Bonnie at 567- 0926. There will be a Pizza Party follow-ing the hunt. Members not taking part in the race can sign up just to attend the Pizza Party. Gloria el-lis, Millie Ciccorelli, Alice Har-

ris, Barbara Boyd, esther Kuntz, Louise Dodge and I are among the winning multi-time sleuths. On many occasions, however, “rook-ies” have been the winners. Re-gardless of who wins, those who have participated report this is a fun activity.

New members are welcome to join the Good Timers at any time of the year and are encouraged to attend a meeting at anytime throughout the year to determine if they want to join. Prior to the April 2 meeting, there will be a “Meet and Greet” hour from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. for those interested in finding out more about the activities, ben-efits of membership, etc. All single and widowed residents of Del Tura are eligible to join and will be hap-pily welcomed. It is an informative gathering and does not require that you join if you attend.

Members, be sure to mark Sat-urday, May 4, on your calendar for the Kentucky Derby party. De-tails will be discussed at the April 2 meeting and in The Tower next month. Giddiup and Away!

With all that is going on at Del Tura on a daily basis, I suggest you keep watching your favorite TV show, but also take advantage of the many activities available here that give you an opportunity to in-teract with others by sharing Good Times. Hope to see you around.

On Sunday, February 24, 2013, we celebrated these three won-derful states. We had over 200 people enjoying great food, new friends and a fun game of Music Trivia with DJ Jerry.

We want to thank all the people who helped us out for this event. It took a lot of work, but it was well worth it. Now the trouble will be to make it even better for next year! Let us know any sug-gestions you may have. We are always open for ideas.

If Indiana would like to join us in the future, we could call it the “Lake Michigan” Party. Howev-er, someone needs to step up and take over the job. The three of us

will happily help you get orga-nized and we’d love to have you on our team. So until next year....enjoy!

Why did a person with an un-spayed female cat have to go to court? For kitty littering.

The goal of the S.O.S. Com-mittee is develop, launch and maintain a comprehensive feral cat management strategy for the Del Tura community. The Com-mittee consists of the following members: Dottie Brown, Russ Geren, June Malonson, Jolene Kilmer and Helen Wythe. Our goal is to create a healthy feral cat community in part by reduc-ing the number of litters of kittens born in DTCC. Our work is sup-ported by Robyn Geren and Rod Harder.

There will be three compo-nents of this feral cat management strategy.

First a Communications fea-ture to inform and educate the residents of Del Tura on the Lee County bylaws pertaining to fe-ral cats, the feral cat strategy for DTCC and how we as humans can live in harmony with the wild

and tame animals in this area. The second part will be the de-

velopment and maintaining of a Trap Neuter/Spay Return (TNR) program to assist and support the Del Tura resident’s participation in the Lee County TNR program.

The third component will be the development and maintain-ing of what is called “Caregivers” to ensure that the DTCC has a healthy feral cat community.

The DTCC is on record as be-ing part of the Lee County Trap Neuter/Spay Return program and as such it is a requirement that we provide a level of care to ensure a healthy feral cat community. For those part of the Lee County Trap Neuter/Spay Return program it is not against Lee County bylaws to feed feral cats in conjunction with taking these feral cats to be neutered and/or spayed at the Lee County TNR program.

The trapping and/or abandon-ing, poisoning, shooting etc. of feral cats is however illegal and in contravention of the Lee County bylaws. The fines for such activi-

ties range from $500 and up.We are just getting started and

so we would ask for some pa-tience from the residents of DTCC while we get this figured out. By reducing the number of kittens born each year we will reduce the number of cats in the DTCC to a healthy feral cat community.

Our first appointment with the Lee County TNR resulted in four females being spayed and returned to the Community. This means that we have prevented up to 32 kittens over a year being born. We are waiting for our next set of appointments.

In the meantime, we would welcome any donation of funds to support this initiative and a few large dog kennels. If anyone is in-terested in adopting a young feral kitten – please let us know.

What do you call the cat that was caught by the police? The purrpatrator.

The most current movies available on DVD are in the Del Tura Video Library. You can go to the movies in the comfort of your own home for $1.00 and see that movie as often as you like for an en-tire week. every dollar that you contribute goes to our HOA. The Video Library is open every Saturday afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. All you new owners and seasonal visitors can take advantage of more than 750 old and current movies.

My recommendation for this month is ARGO, starring Ben Af-leck, Alan Arkin and John Goodman. During the Iran hostage crisis that began in late 1979, CIA extraction specialist, Tony Mendez, concocts a scheme in which he and six hostages will pretend to be a film crew on a location scout, passing through the country over the course of two days. This is one of the most suspenseful movies in quite some time. It won the Academy Award for the best movie for 2012.

DEL TURA book Review

“My Father’s Secret War”By Lucinda Franks

Lucinda Franks Morgenthau married to Henry Morgenthau, NY County District Attorney lives and writes in New York for the New York Times, the New Yorker, and the Atlantic Monthly.

This is a deeply personal book about her quest to uncover the secret services of her father, Tom Franks, did in the name of his country during the Great War, World War II.

Sworn to secrecy, Tom Franks hid from his wife and two daugh-ters the horrendous effect of his wartime activities. It affected his personality and caused enormous problems in his marriage and his parenting.

He was forcefully instructed to carry the knowledge of his activi-ties to his grave, and he was deter-mined to do so.

His daughter, desperately seek-ing answers for his lack of affec-tion, his drinking, and his constant withdrawal, began exploring the war souvenirs she uncovered as he aged, and began interrogating him, at times rather ruthlessly.

As Tom slips into frailty and se-nility, he becomes less aware of his vow of secrecy and begins to give Cindy a glimpse of the horrors he endured in his Army career.

It’s a sad story. Cindy does, however, succeed in uncovering her father’s honorable service to

the United States and retrieves some recognition for him from the country he served, even if it hap-pened posthumously.

She is, of course, aided by con-siderable wealth and influence from her prestigious husband, and able to use his contacts to obtain records I doubt the average re-searcher would be able to uncover.

But, it is an interesting journey, rich in history of a very chaotic period in our lives, and a glimpse into some of the records never re-leased to the public in spite of the Freedom of Information act.

If you’re interested in history, it is an excellent read.

Most of you are aware that once a year during the Annual Meeting of the HOA, the President has the honor of announc-ing who has been chosen as our COUPLe OF THe YeAR and our PeRSON OF THe YeAR. In mak-ing this year’s announce-ment, Joyce Cuffe, Presi-dent, said that they were all people without whom she couldn’t imagine being here in Del Tura. She told us that DAVe and BeTTY SCHeeTZ of San Miguel Lane are our new COUPLe OF THe YeAR and DO-RIS MeYeR of Las Palmas Boulevard has been named our PeRSON OF THe YeAR.

Joyce described the Scheetz as people who don’t know how to say “no” when they’re asked to take on a job that is important to our community. Although they had assisted at many events, they usually preferred not to have the full responsibil-ity of running the activities. This all changed, however, when the chairman of our Thanksgiving and Christ-mas Outreach Projects had to be out of town during the crucial preparation time. Dave and Betty immedi-ately stepped in to fill the gap and led a large group of volunteers through the process of gathering mon-ey, foodstuffs and presents to help the many families we assist each year. They felt that Del Turians came through in a heartwarming way to help make the holi-days brighter for at least a small part of the less fortu-nate population.

Both Betty and Dave are often found in our kitchen assisting with such events as the Pancake Breakfast, the Spaghetti Dinner, and the Italian Booth at the In-ternational Food Festival. From cooking to dishwash-ing, no task is too big or

too small for them to tack-le. Betty also finds time to volunteer for the FISH organization and as the ad-ministrator keeps track of all the volunteer hours their members donate. They have also worked as tireless volunteers at both the Trash and Treasures Sale and the Craft Fair.

When she is not volun-teering, Betty enjoys water aerobics and zumba, and together she and Dave play shuffleboard and bocce ball. They also like go-ing to the pool together. At home, she knits, crochets, makes greeting cards and does scrap booking. Dave is a very talented artist and enjoys painting pictures for his family and friends and also doing pen and ink drawings.

Both Betty and Dave were born in Trenton, NJ and went to school there. Following high school at the age of sixteen, Betty learned to be a hairdresser and that work became her career. She eventually

owned her own business and only missed one or two days in all of the twenty-six years she had her shop. With her obvious “people” skills it is easy to imagine how she could listen to her clients and hear what they had to say, but be slow to offer her own opinions. She developed an early work ethic and this is undoubt-edly part of her success as a volunteer today.

Meantime, Dave went in the Army immediately following high school and served in Vietnam for a year, a subject he doesn’t speak about very much. When he was out of the service he took a temporary job with a corporation called Ho-masote, which made prefab building board. His tempo-rary job turned into a forty-year career as a millwright with the same company.

The Scheetzes have been married for forty-five years and still consider each other their best friend. They have two children. Their son Christopher lives in Geor-

gia and their daughter Jen-nifer and her husband Jay with their three children, Avery, Colton and Amber, live in Pennsylvania. Dave and Betty often visited their cousin, Agnes Byrnes who lived in Del Tura, and when they were looking for a re-tirement community they kept coming back to Del Tura and eventually bought here in August 2009. Dave learned long ago that when Betty says, “I’ve been thinking” it means she has a project in mind for him to do. When she says, “How much do you love me?” it means she wants him to volunteer for something. We can only say that we hope they both continue to say, “yes” to the many proj-ects they engage in at Del Tura.

Joyce Cuffe described our new PeRSON OF THe YeAR, DORIS MeYeR, as someone who always says “yes”. Doris describes her-self as a confirmed “volun-teeraholic” and both these descriptions are undoubt-edly true. Doris willingly steps to the plate whenever there is an apparent need in our community and her un-failing energy, talent, and perseverance take over to do the job she has agreed to assume.

Wearing two big hats, Doris has been Member-ship Chairman of the HOA for several years now and is known to everyone as the lady who col-lects and tabu-lates our yearly dues. Having served about fifteen years as Co-editor of The Tower, Doris recently was named editor when that position became vacant. Admitting she didn’t know too much about the computer pro-

gram The Tower used, she plunged in to learn its intri-cacies and is currently turn-ing out the paper ten times a year.

Doris has a long history of volunteering at Del Tura. She served for two years as Treasurer and one year as President of the HOA and has also been a member of the Statutory, Financial, Rules and Regulations, and Policies and Procedures Committees. Whenever there is a play or entertain-ment she is hard at work in the Lighting Booth. The Pancake Breakfasts and working at the Ice Cream Socials are other functions where you will see her hap-pily assisting. Her love of playing tennis has led her to become the Co-Captain of our Bronze Tennis Team and on the Tennis Associa-tion Board. She also par-ticipates in playing shuf-fleboard with her husband Bob.

Her interest in food has led her to be active in the Italian Booth at our Inter-national Food Festival and to assist with the Bake Sale at our annual Craft Fair in the fall. How many of you know that she is responsible for choosing the recipes for our monthly “Chef’s Cor-ner” in The Tower? Besides all the activities she partici-pates in at Del Tura, Doris and Bob find time to usher at the Florida Rep The-atre and enjoy going to the

Royal Palm Dinner Theatre and Gulf Coast Symphony concerts. In her really, re-ally spare time, Doris likes to cook and bake, do crafts such as making afghans for charity, work jigsaw puz-zles, and read.

Doris and Bob both grew up in Fairfield, CT. and met at a Catholic Youth Organi-zation dance while in high school. They knew each other about five years be-fore they married in 1956. They lived in Ansonia, the valley area of Connecticut, for 40 years. Doris had four children but lost a son and now has three daugh-ters and five grandchildren all living in Connecticut. Her little Pomeranian dog Crystal is part of her fam-ily here. Doris’ career was in nursing, and for twenty years she worked as a psy-chiatric-mental health nurse in a psychiatric unit of a general hospital.

What a good choice was made when Doris was named our Person of the Year.

By Betty Wright

Del Tura Country Club is a community of some 1296 homes, some of them unoccupied during the summer months; however, there are a variety of activities that take place all year long. There are dances, professional shows, a play, a pageant, a craft fair, a food fair and a rummage sale. Those activities do not in-clude the ceramics, bingo, card clubs, scrap booking, wood carv-ing and – well, the list goes on and on.

While all that activity sounds wonderful, the one thing that may end some of those enjoyable ac-tivities is the lack of volunteers. None of our activities are pos-sible without our resident volun-teers. And the community is be-ginning to experience difficulty in finding new volunteers. Some of our older residents are expe-

riencing health problems, others are moving out of the commu-nity, and we are not seeing new faces to replace those we are los-ing or have lost.

Why should you volunteer? Volunteering gives you the op-portunity to meet new friends and it helps you to stay mentally alert and physically active. A volunteer makes a difference in the community. New volunteers offer new ideas and methods that can influence our choices and im-prove our activities. Volunteer-ing gives you an opportunity to try something new and can be fun and fulfilling.

Not every activity fits every individual. If you are planning to volunteer, be sure to ask ques-tions. Learn what a committee does; know what will be expected of you, and what your time com-mitment will be. Some activities only occur once a year, while oth-

ers may occur more frequently. The advantage to the volunteer is that you can choose to spend a little of your time or a lot of time, depending upon the activity or committee chosen. Consider a committee or activity that shares your interests, where you feel you will be comfortable. You may decide to join a committee that will be able to utilize your skills and/or experience or where you can learn something new. If you do not choose a committee, you may decide to participate in a specific activity; there are still benefits – making new friends, trying something new and having fun.

Please consider volunteering; contact an HOA Board member or a Committee Chairperson to-day. Remember: “Volunteers aren’t paid, not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.” ~Anonymous

Another spring is once again upon us. Hard to believe that the first quarter of the year has passed! The days and weeks seem to fly by so swiftly - especially here in Del Tura. Our busy lives keep us on a continuous treadmill, leaving little time to think about the seasons. Let’s get off our treadmills for a short while and think about how the springs here compare to the ear-lier spring times of our lives.

For each season there is a reason to celebrate life and all of its gifts. Spring allows us to pause, reflect, and watch the beauty of nature un-fold before our eyes. Like an artist that brings a blank canvas to life, nature blesses us with so many wondrous gifts. With each spring comes a chance to focus on the new life and rebirth of the fauna and flo-ra that surrounds us. How do these miracles compare to our own lives?

Like the gentle spring rains that

will quench the thirsty grass, spring also gives us a chance to cleanse our hearts and souls, a chance to celebrate the new life surrounding us here in “Paradise.” We can all agree that spring is certainly quite different here than it is was up north. I can remember getting so excited about the daffodils popping up in April, then a frost would ap-pear and those beautiful, hopeful spring flowers would disappear. We are so blessed to awaken each day to these continuous miracles of nature.

Imagine that we are artists with large, blank canvases in front of us. We are asked to paint a mural that would depict the springs of our lives, past and present. After a brief recollection of our thoughts, we dip into the palette that holds all the special colors of our lives. Our brushes are suddenly filled with el-egant greens to create a lush green field. Next our sky is covered with the most beautiful shades of blue.

These colors may be the only simi-larities between you and the other artists. each mural will tell your story and the shades of each color that you choose will tell a unique story of your life’s journey.

In my mind’s eye the earlier springs of my life up north bring me back to those carefree days of my youth. Finally saying farewell to those cold, dark, gray days of winter, and looking forward to the brighter, longer days of the new season. More time to spend outside playing with our friends --- flying our kites, playing baseball, or rid-ing our bikes.

Kite flying! That memory would definitely have a special place on my mural. The colors would be bright and depict happiness, and unfortu-nately some sad, dark colors, too. I remember our Dad patiently show-ing us how to make our own kites out of newspaper, and old pieces of sticks. Then going to Mom’s old rag bag sack (nothing ever went to

waste) to find some material for the tail. We couldn’t wait to get that tail and ball of string attached! We would be so excited--- so careful to find the right spot, so very cau-tious. Then....you guessed it! In no time our beautiful soaring kite was tangled on a tree limb, or telephone wire. Well, we did have fun while it lasted!

Of course it wasn’t all play. each spring brought changes--- and with each season came more responsi-bilities. Our murals of the past are filled with colors that represent our struggles and accomplishments, they define who we are. The scen-ery may change along the way for each of us but each new spring gives us an opportunity to renew and reflect on our lives. Like a new blossom, spring gives each of us a chance for new beginnings; perhaps fill your next blank canvas with more vibrant colors!

every Monday and Friday, all year long, we have Jane Fonda Aerobics from 10:00 to 10:35 a.m. where we stretch and strengthen various parts of our body. As we get older our muscles weaken and tighten up so this is a great exer-cise class to give our muscles more strength, increase circulation, and stretching our tight muscles.

On Wednesdays, all year

Jane Fonda Aerobics and body SculptingDEL TURA

long, we play a Jane Fonda Body Sculpting DVD, starting at 10:00 a.m. and ending at 10:45 a.m., which uses weights to strengthen our muscles. There is a warm-up section in the beginning and also a cool down at the end that also has stretching for our muscles. This is good for those of us need-ing more weight exercise to help strengthen our muscles and build up our bones, since as we age we lose bone mass. Come join us and

don’t be afraid that these exercises are too much for you, because you can do them at your own level, do-ing fewer repetitions and starting out with no weights or one pound weights. We have some weights and mats that can be borrowed during the class and I offer free a Jane Fonda Aerobics Workout CD that we play on Monday and Fri-day. So come and join the fun and the opportunity to exercise. Here are some pictures of our group.

Our Turazumba classes will continue to be held all summer Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 9:30 a.m. or 9:15 a.m. if the previ-ous class of Tai Chi is finished ear-lier. During the winter months we have three instructors and, in the summer after they go back to their homes up North, we play DVDs of the three instructors. This class is a fun way to get your exercise to help you lose weight, get stronger, have better coordination, better balance, and get healthier. Join us for lots of great fun and laughs.

Don’t worry that these exercises may be too much for you because we all do it at our own pace. The idea is to come and move around the best you can and don’t overdo. Our first goal is to not have an ac-cident or an injury. In the summer it is getting too hot to do much exercising outdoors, so this is a perfect activity to have fun with others and get all the benefits of exercising and staying cooler in-doors. Del Tura has so many dif-ferent activities where you can be

active, so if Turazumba is not for you, please get involved with oth-er activities for exercise. We also

have free DVDs of the Turazumba if you want to do it at home. So please come join us.

As the month of April decends upon us, the certainties of Del Tura continue; that is, the “Snowbirds” will be leaving us to their northern homes and the MGA‘s 9-holers and 18- holers will continue their weekly scheduled competitions each Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. respectively. If you have not been part of either group and are interested, the 9-holers can contact Jack Riordan and the 18-hole con-tact is Ray Rowe. There are also sign-up sheets placed in the Dun-geon that are available until early Monday morning for each Wednes-day’s tourney.

During the month of March, two most interesting competitions took place on the West and South courses. The annual Member-Guest was played on March 2 and 3 and

the ABCD tournament dubbed as the “Superintendent’s Revenge” on March 9. In the Member-Guest Flight 1, the brother team of Vaughn and Bruce Wedge were in complete command. On day one, that had a best ball format, they were tied for 1st with Tom and Matt Gould and Pete DeWilde and Henry Powell with scores of 54. Saturday, how-ever, they really put it together as Vaughn shot 62 and Bruce 66 for a net score of 113 and a final of 167. They bested Steve Doyle and Mark englert who shot 123 and a total of 181 and John Duffy and Jerry Bei-ermann at 183 and Dave Denman and Robert essex’s finished 5th with a total of 184. The finish of Flight 2 was even more exciting as the brother team of Mike and Robert Uhlich and Larry Brown and Tony Duffy finished in a dead heat and had to go to a playoff to determine

the champion. The brothers pre-vailed by winning the second hole to secure the championship at 173. Third place went to John Shearer and Ray Croteau at 175.

The ABCD tournament featured the pin placements in the most dif-ficult spots on the greens that the course Superintendent could find for the scramble format. The greens were no problem for the team of Tim Trout, Ruth Ann Blevins and Joanne Iannuzzelli as they conquered the West and South in a formidable 3 under par 58. Bob Deems, Brenda Sharp, Bill Kelly and Joan Gervase finished 2nd at 60 and the team of Rick Antaya, Kay Rolander, Moa Shearer and Barb Jones along with Dave Blevins, Ann DeGrande, Gail Flynn and Ruth Pfarr and the team of Rick Robbins, Chuck Reese, Ron Raming and Liz Flanagan all tied for 3rd at 62.

February is our shortest month but we managed to stay very busy. Un-fortunately, The Valentine’s Tourna-ment lasted only a few holes with all of us running for cover as the rains and wind came. Many of us returned to the Pub for a cookout after drying out.

We had much better luck for the Member-Guest on the 28th. Dianne Bevilacqua, Sandy Rolando and Ar-lene Kelly organized our tournament around the theme of “The Days of Wine and Roses.” every table includ-ed beautiful bouquets of white and red roses, a bottle of wine and choco-lates. There were many winners in this putts-only contest.

First place in the three flights were:Flight One: Kay Rolader and

Mollie BrownFlight Two: Sherry Fitzgerald and

Bette LanglaisFlight Three: Sandy Rolando and

Bernie DeanIn addition, many other prizes

included closest to the pin, longest drive, closest to the line and, for those clever enough to get on Four West, hitting the putter off the tee! Four golfers were successful and, in a drawing, Alice Kelly won golf for four at Magnolia.

Congratulations to all the winners and a special thanks to Dianne for the beautiful table settings and all her hard work.

HEALTH NEWS

Mirror, mirror on the wall, why do I look so old after all?

As the days go by, priorities change and we may not take care of ourselves as well as we deserve. Following is a checklist of things you can do to make sure you’re putting the best “you” for-ward.

Start by Smiling: Forget the pricey night creams and “anti-aging” magic serums. A simple smile can make you appear years younger. Smil-ing and looking on the bright side can also help boost your immune system, as it decreases stress chemicals.

Take a Timeout for Yourself:Stress can do great damage to not

only one’s appearance, but also one’s body as a whole. Create “me time,” which can simply be a few minutes of deep breathing exercises, meditation or writing.

Get Active: Besides not smok-ing, watching your weight is the most important step in starting anew. A healthy body leads to healthy skin and a clear mind. By exercising for at least 30 minutes each day, you can release repressed stress and anxiety in the body.

always very busy in Del Tura as we wrap up activities for another golf season. The highlight was the Presi-dent’s Cup (all a.m. starting times on March 13, 14, 20, 21). In addi-tion “The Susan G. Komen for the

Cure” Golf Tournament was March 16. (Men and Women formed teams for this as well as players from other courses.)

We ended the month with the Men’s Jack and Jill tournament.

Ryan Gilbert continues to have Wednesday afternoon golf clinics as well as offering private lessons. Check in the Pro Shop for more de-tails.

What to eat and drink on the course? Golf Digest’s top foods include cool water, nuts, raw fruit, natural beef or chicken jerky, peanut butter and sunflower seeds. You can be sure that adult beverages and hot dogs are close runners up!

Have a great month!

As of my writing today we just finished week 17 of our 18-week league. Next week ends our regu-lar season with the last week of play, followed by our new 8-team Tournament and then followed by our 9th Annual Bust-Up Party on March 29. Of course this will all be old news by the time you read this in the April The Tower and our Tournament will be over along with our Bust-Up party at the end of the month but I will have a letter in the May issue of The Tower giving our final stand-ing along with a report on our party.

After today's play, March 8, the standings are as follows: The "A" flight leaders are still Ben Hargraves/Bob Crawford at 44/7, followed in 2nd place by Jack and Janet Blevons @ 40/11, and followed by Pete Slusarski/Doris Thurber @ 38/13 in 3rd place. The "B" flight leaders are still Len Fleming/Donna Craw-ford @ 34/17, followed by Stan Peters/Don Mummert @ 30/21, followed by two teams, Mollie Brown/ellen Slusarski and Mary Pimental/ Cindy Forest (who has been subbing for Carol Vigilante for the past 8 weeks) in 3rd place

@ 24/27. As you can see, as you read

this, the race for the 6-trophy spots is still wide open and again will come down to the last week of play, which is next week. Seems every season comes down to just that, which shows just how keen competition is in our 20-team league. It is always fun and also very competitive.

We have a great league that has been playing together for the past 9 years that I have been League Captain and we pretty much stay together year after year unless health issues or graduating on to a higher league up in Heaven takes team members up there. We have a great bunch of people and have a lot of fun. We always ap-preciate all those who sub now and then to fill in for regular team members who can't play every week for one reason or another and I have to say, you all are a very important part of our league and we are so happy you are will-ing to play when we need you. It's been another awesome and fun-filled season.

In The May issue of The Tow-erI will tell you how both "A" and "B" flights top three finished and also the 8-Team Tournament results. Hopefully we will have

some pictures not only in The Tower but also on Ron Raming's Del Tura website. Again, I want to thank Hometown and John Ruttman for supplying the glass beads needed to use on our courts not only for our Friday League but also our Travel League, where we represent all of you and Del Tura. Janet and I both try to maintain all the shuffle-board equipment down there and to maintain and repair things as they are damaged. We do our best so that anyone who wants to en-joy and use the courts and equip-ment can do so. We appreciate the people who power-wash and keep our courts in good shape so that not only our two leagues, but also everyone else can come down and enjoy playing on our courts. We just ask that you re-spect the rules as posted on the shuffleboard shack and respect and treat the equipment you use as your own. It costs money to replace things that are damaged or broken due to negligence by people who come down to play. Thanks for your time and space in The Tower. See you again in the May issue of The Tower. I enjoy writing these articles, so hope you enjoy reading them.

DEL TURA Friday Shuffleboard League

By Jay Flanagan

As The Tower goes to press, the Del Tura Men’s softball team is readying for their final two games (Pine Lakes and Old Bridge Vil-lage People) and the season-end-ing tournament. The Amigos go into the remainder of the season deadlocked for first place with the 2012 champions, Old Bridge Rookies. Both squads have iden-tical 14 and 2 records.

The Amigos are hoping to put together both offensive and de-fensive games like they have been playing over the second half of the schedule. The defensive effort has been led by shortstop, Rick Bourquin; first baseman, Dave

Denman; and outfielders, Don Vadeboncouer and John Rutman, along with the steady pitching of Tommy Walsh.

On the offensive side, the team has an overall batting average of .510 and has thirteen different players with an average over .400. John Rutman leads the team with a .813 average having compiled 26 hits in just 32 times at bat. Others in that elite group include Joe Angelilli (.718), Craig Lin-dahl (.609), Rick Antaya (.592), Rick Bourquin (.578), Dave Den-man (.541), earl Boss (.487), Mike Stark (.457), Rick Robbins (.452), Jerry Beiermann (.409), Jesse Leverre (.409), and Rob Fringuelli (.407). Antaya has been

the most productive with men on base by knocking in 38 runs and he also leads the team with 29 hits, 5 doubles, 3 home runs and 6 triples. Others on top of the hit pa-rade include Angelilli and Lindahl (28), Bourquin and Ruttman (26) and Stark with 21. Lindahl, Bour-quin and Robbins are also among the power hitters with 9, 6 and 7 extra base hits each. Defense and timely hitting will be the key to the Amigo’s finish.

The season to date has been a success and the team appreciates the community following and fan support we have had and it is the envy of all other teams. Your at-tendance at games has been vocal and very loud. THANKS!!!

Be Aware of Risks of Not Investing You’ve no doubt heard about the risks associated with investing. This investment carries this type of risk, while that investment carries anoth-er one. And it is certainly true that all investments do involve some form of risk. But what about not investing? Isn’t there some risk associ-ated with that, too?

In fact, by staying on the investment sidelines, or at least by avoiding long-term, growth-oriented investments, you may incur several risks. Here are some to consider:

• You might not keep up with inflation. If you put all your money under the proverbial “mattress,” or, more realistically, you keep it all in “cash” instruments and very short-term investments, you might think you are “playing it safe.” After all, you might reason, your principal is protected, so even if you don’t really make any money, you’re not losing it, either. But that’s not strictly true, because if your money is in investment vehicles that don’t even keep up with inflation, you can lose ground. In fact, even at a relatively mild three percent annual inflation rate, your purchasing power will decline by about half in just 25 years.

• You might outlive your money. For a 65-year-old couple, there’s a 50 percent chance that one spouse will live past age 90, according to the Society of Actuaries. This statistic suggests that you may need your investments to help provide enough income to sustain you for two, or even three, decades in retirement.

• You might not be able to maintain your financial independence. Even if you don’t totally run out of money, you could end up scrimp- ing by — or, even worse, you could become somewhat dependent on your grown children for financial assistance. For most people, this prospect is unacceptable. Consequently, you’ll want to make appropriate financial decisions to help maintain your financial inde- pendence.

• You might not be able to retire on your terms. You would probably like to decide when you retire and how you’ll retire — that is, what sort of lifestyle you’ll pursue during retirement. But both these choices may be taken out of your hands if you haven’t invested enough to retire on your own terms. • You might not be able to leave the type of legacy you desire. Like most people, you would probably like to be able to leave some- thing behind to your family and to those charitable organizations you support. You can help create this type of legacy through the appropriate legal vehicles — i.e., a will, a living trust and so on — but you’ll still need to fund these mechanisms somehow. And that means you’ll need to draw on all your financial assets, including your investments.

Work with your financial advisor to determine the mixture of growth and income investments you need during your working years and as you move toward retirement to help you meet your retirement goals. However you do it, get into the habit of investing, and never lose it — because the risks of not investing are just too great.
