5 The 12th Symposium on Lactic Acid Bacteria

The 12th Symposium on Lactic Acid Bacteria will be held in the Congress Centre “Hotel Zuiderduin”, Zeeweg 52 Egmond aan Zee, the Netherlands from August 27 to August 31, 2017. The Symposium will start with an opening and keynote lecture, followed by a Welcome Reception and a buffet dinner on August 27th at 17.00 h. The official closing will be on August 31 at 13.00 h.

Aim of the SymposiumLactic Acid Bacteria play important roles in the production of food and feed throughout the world in addition to being used as health-promoting probiotics. The incessant scientific interest in these microorganisms by academic research groups as well as by industry has resulted in many important scientific breakthroughs and has led to new applications. A series of tri-annual symposia on Lactic Acid Bacteria was started in 1983 in order to communicate and stimulate research on Lactic Acid Bacteria and their application. The aim of these state-of-the-art symposia is to offer a unique platform for researchers active in this area of biotechnology, from academia and industry alike, to present recent work, to obtain information on new developments and to exchange views with colleagues from all over the world on scientific progress and applications.

Scientific ProgrammeThe programme will include invited plenary lectures providing overviews of state-of-the-art developments in five selected scientific areas; short plenary lectures that cover the most recent advances in LAB research and application; as well as several poster sessions.

The scientific areas that will be covered are [1] Microbial Communities, [2] Genetics and Metabolism,[3] Fermentation and Industrial Applications, [4] Host-microbe Interactions, [5] Bacteriophage and Antimicrobials.

In addition, leading scientists from outside the LAB-community will be included in the Programme for coverage of important emerging fields. Finally, the Programme encompasses two thematic sessions and two plenary poster-flash sessions.

All participants will receive an Abstract Book containing extended abstracts of the invited short lectures and poster abstracts, as well as the Proceedings Book that will be published as a special edition of FEMS Microbiology Reviews.

Poster contributions in all areas of research on Lactic Acid Bacteria, especially on industrial applications, are encouraged. There will be ample time for poster viewing and the posters will be on display during the whole Symposium.

Special LAB12 Journal PublicationAll invited lecturers are offered the opportunity to contribute to a special issue of the journal FEMS Micro-biology Reviews. Guest editors for this special issue will be, Michiel Kleerebezem, Eddy Smid and Oscar Kuipers. A hard copy of these Proceedings and a poster and short lecture Abstract Book will be provided to all participants. The cost of these books are included in the registration fee.

PostersPoster abstracts should be submitted via the website (www.labsymposium.org) where instructions on abstract format and requirements can also be found. The deadline for submission of abstracts is April 8, 2017. Abstracts should be written in English. The Organising Committee reserves the right to reject poster proposals that do not meet a sufficiently high standard or that are beyond the scope of the Symposium.

Authors will be informed about the acceptance of their posters by May 30, 2017. The size of the poster boards will be 100 (width) x 120 (height) cm. The posters will be on display throughout the Symposium. Some posters will be selected for a short lecture by the authors, or will be presented in plenary Poster-Flash sessions or in one of the two Thematic Sessions. The selection will be carried out on the basis of the overall quality of the abstract and special interest.

Poster abstracts will be made available on the Symposium website to registered participants only, from Sunday August 27, 2017 onwards.

LABIP AwardThe Lactic Acid Bacteria Industrial Platform (LABIP) will offer an award to a mid-career senior researcher based on outstanding excellence in LAB research with industrial relevance. In addition, there will be three poster awards based on the same criteria.

LanguageThe language of the Symposium will be English.

Venue The recently renovated Congress Centre “Hotel Zuiderduin” is in an attractive coastal setting near the city of Alkmaar, about one hour by train from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. Information on reaching “Hotel Zui-derduin” by car, train or bus can be found on the Symposium website (www.labsymposium.org). The hotel can accommodate most of the participants and has ample space for lectures and poster exhibitions. It also has indoor and outdoor recreational and sports facilities and it is within walking distance from the North Sea beach. The number of participants will be limited to 650. In case the number of applicants exceeds this limit, the Organising Committee will prioritize participants presenting a poster.
