Today’s readings remind us that no matter how in the dark, surrounded, or outnumbered we

feel in the face of evil, death, and sin, the Father will stand with us if we stand with Him and his

Son. In the First Reading, we are reminded that it was the knowledge that God was with him

enabled Jeremiah to remain faithful to his difficult task as a prophet. In the Second Reading, St.

Paul draws a contrast between Christ and Adam: sin came into the world through Adam;

abundant grace came through Jesus Christ, the Second Adam. Finally in today’s Gospel Our

Lord reminds the Apostles that they only need to stand with Him and not be afraid.

The history of the Church proves that this battle is real, not just symbolic, starting with the

Apostles themselves. Every one of Jesus' first Apostles died a martyr's death - except St John

the Evangelist, who miraculously survived even though being boiled in oil. Cardinal Francis

Xavier Nguyen Van Thuan, the Vietnamese cardinal who spent thirteen years in prison under

the Communists, used to say that this is one of the ever present signs of the true Church. He

used to say that the true Church founded by Christ is One, Holy, Catholic, and Persecuted. St

Paul also understood this saying, "For it is not against human enemies that we have to struggle,

but against the Sovereignties and the Powers who originate the darkness in this world, the

spiritual army of evil." (Ephesians, 6) The Holy Spirit gives us power and grace to live as true

disciples of Jesus Christ. For this we pray: “Lord Jesus, it is our joy and privilege to be your

disciples. Give us strength and courage to bear any hardship and suffering which may come

our way in your service.”

Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

In the gospel Jesus tells us that he is one with the Father and that the only way to know the Father is through knowing Jesus. He also says: "... for I am gentle and humble of heart." (Mtt 11: 29) Who would believe, from all the other religions of the world with all their terrifying, capricious and demanding images of God, that the ground of Being is truly revealed as being "gentle and humble" of heart! We can only know this and believe it through encountering, knowing and loving our Lord Jesus Christ. It is he who heals the estrangement of God brought about through Original Sin and opens our eyes to the love of the Father. The Feast of the Sacred Heart is the antidote to Jansenism and scrupulous, self-hating religion that denies the warmth of God's loving heart and keeps us from approaching him to accept His mercy for what it really is. Mabuhay everyone and welcome to your youth corner. The youth night is up and running well. Last Friday was our 3rd night of gathering after lockdown. Sacred Heart College's School Chaplain, Mrs Vo, continues to bring young people from Napier which makes the night more special and fun. Thank you to all parents and volunteers who turned up to support our young people. One of our active members is looking after the food. Thank you, Julian Nielo, for taking care of that hard job. Everyone enjoyed your yummy cooking. Our Confirmation program will begin next term and registration is now open. Please let us know if you are interested in joining this journey. Our heartfelt thanks to Fr Brian for all he did for our Youth Ministry. His prayers and support always touched the hearts of our young people and their families. He will be deeply missed and we wish him all the best in Waitara. Youth Mass: Sunday 12 July, St Peter Chanel, 10am. Youth Night: Friday during school term, St Peter Chanel 6-

Day of Prayer for Refugees and Migrants 2020

“Where is your brother or sister?”

Today marks the Day of Prayer for Refugees and Migrants. This year, with

a post-COVID society as their context, Caritas is encouraging

communities to reflect on the issue of migrant exploitation. This is

influenced by Pope Francis’ concerns for the victims of various kinds of

human trafficking, including the exploitation of migrant workers. During

Pope Francis’ apostolate, he has always expressed his concerns for

migrants and refugees, and particularly so during the COVID-19

pandemic. In his Apostolic Exhortation Evanglii Gaudium (2013), he

references Genesis 4:9 and asks us, “Where is your brother or sister who

is enslaved?”. He challenges us to not look the other way.

St. Mary’s Primary School

St Mary's has had our middle and senior students experiencing hockey skills training. Our sports teams are getting ready to go, with teams being put together and coaches sort after. The children are enjoying their lives getting back to near normal again. All the best for a great week.

God bless. Rachael Quinney (DRS)

St. Joseph’s Primary School It was with sadness that we farewelled Father Brian, last Friday. The whole school sang The Blessing Song for him and it is our prayer

that he will be blessed in his new posting to Waitara.

Next term we will open a second New Entrant Room and welcome back Mrs Catherine Cawston as classroom teacher for our new five year olds. Yesterday we received the exciting news that approval has been given by the Diocese for the building of two new classrooms at

St. Joseph's. It will be wonderful to have the space needed for our growing roll.

Aaron O’Neill,

Principal

Sacred Heart College This week we will celebrate both Matariki and Library week. The theme is ‘Shoot for the Stars’. We focus on highlighting women who have done just that and achieved their dreams. We are looking forward to having Fr Barry say our first House Mass at school on Thursday. Winter

sport is now fully underway with teams competing in netball, hockey, football and badminton.

St. John’s College . This week we celebrated our St John’s Feast Day. We brought the day forward given that we have a 12 week term and we wanted the students to have a break. The boys had Mass in the College gym followed by Interhouse sport. We were delighted to have Fr Trung celebrate Mass for us in the College chapel on Tuesday. It was two years ago that he was working with our students as a seminarian. A reminder again about our College Open Day which is on Sunday, 2 August at 2pm. Our “Taste of St. John’s Day” will be held on Wednesday 29th July. This is for Year 8 boys who are looking to enrol at St. John’s College in 2021. Please phone the office to register your son.
