Unblessed Ego

A.W. Tozer

I have not said that religion withoutpower makes no changes in a man'slife, only that it makes no fundamen-tal difference.

Water may change from liquid to va-por, from vapor to snow and back toliquid again, and still be fundamen-tally the same.

So powerless religion may put a manthrough many surface changes andleave him exactly what he was be-fore. Right there is where the snarelies.

The changes are in form only, theyare not in kind.

Behind the activities of the nonreli-gious man and the man who has re-ceived the gospel without power liethe very same motives.

An unblessed ego lies at the bottomof both lives, the difference beingthat the religious man has learnedbetter to disguise his vice.

His sins are refined and less offen-sive than before he took up religion, but the man himself is not a better

Selfishness still throbs like an en-gine at the center of the man's life.True, he may learn to "redirect"his selfish impulses, but his woe isthat self still lives unrebuked andeven unsuspected within his deepheart.

He is a victim of religion withoutpower.

The man who has received theWord without power has trimmedhis hedge, but it is a thorn hedgestill and can never bring forth thefruits of the new life.

Men do not gather grapes ofthorns nor figs of thistles. Yet sucha man may be a leader in theChurch, and his influence and hisvote may go far to determine whatreligion shall be in his generation.

JESUS LOVES ME

This story came from the Inspirational

Messages from the Internet. Yes, it did

occur in America but there is no reason

that it can’t work for us.

It was a very hot day, sweat & irritation wasin abundance. Traffic was hectic & theAirconditioning in my car was not co-operatingeither. I had to run many errands, & since thebaby sitter was on leave I had to take a day off& take my 4yr old son wherever I went. I wasjust hoping that he behaved well the entire day, because I was definitely not in a good mood. I had to pick up a book for my friend whowas celebrating her birthday the next day, so Iran to the bookstore, (Remember, I was literallydragging David, my son along with me) & thecheckout line was very, very, very, long. I didnot want to drive to another bookstore to avoid

the long line, because I did not want tosuffer the heat again. The checkout line looked like a giantsnail to me. I looked at my watch somany times that I thought that even thewatch looked like it had stopped. I couldnot smile at anybody nor could I interactwith my son because “I was too irritated,”& I just wanted to finish all my errands.Everyone around me also had a tired &irritated look on them. My son was tryingto get my attention by talking to me abouthis school, his friends, the beautiful sun, butterflies, & a little girl; which allsounded too boring to me. (How rude canI get, huh!!!!!)/ I finally had enough & I turned towardsmy son to tell him to just be quiet becausehis joyful chatter was giving me aheadache, but he just smiled at me &started singing “JESUS LOVES METHIS I KNOW…YES! JESUS LOVESME, YES! JESUS LOVES ME….” Bynow he was LOUD . At first I wasembarrassed, because people turned theirheads towards us, but then I noticed thatneither the heat, the long line & my mooddid not affect my boy; & the joy of theLord, made him sing. Everyone turned &looked at David & smiled at him;everyone was smiling, (even I was), theline seemed to get shorter, the checkoutperson was wishing everybody “have anice day” so sweetly.

My errands list looked shorter, mymood was better, I picked up the book& hugged my son who reminded methat Jesus Loves me & I need to passon His Love and not my irritation toothers, because He is there to take careof me – I should just enjoy all thesituations & keep praising Him. WhenI stepped out of the store, I thought Isaw a cool cloud passing by. The joy of the Lord can change anybad situation into a pure joy. The nexttime you are feeling depressed or justirritated, start humming: “Jesus LovesMe….” (it worked for David & it willwork for you too; because Jesus isdefinitely there to take care of us). Romans 1:7(NLT) “…God loves you dearly, &He has called you to be his very ownpeople. May grace & peace be yoursfrom God our Father & the LordJesus Christ.”

There are too many of you tothank for the hard work that you

did so Jeanette and I withoutpointing anyone out in particularjust want to say thank you. I can

tell you that at this stage wehave raised and banked

$72,251.00 This is around$9,000.00 up on last years totalat the same time. We still have

more to bank and so as soon asother figures are in we will let

you know.
