Rex may still have sightsvset on Cape YorkREGIONAL Express (Rex) has addeda Saab 340 aircraft to its Townsvillebase and is setting its sights on growthin Queensland following the shutdownof Skytrans.

Rex had planned to start new servicesto Cape York ports in North Queenslandafter Skytrans stopped flying.

However, it later dropped those plansafter consulting with local communities.

However in a statement on January30, Rex general manager of networkplanning and strategy Warrick Lodgeclosure of Skytrans gave Rex, "theeconomies of scale to further service themore remote parts of Queensland likethe Cape Peninsula, as well as respond tothe solicitations of other cities that havebeen crying out for our great hospitableair services at affordable fares".

"The past 30 months have seenpassenger numbers declining due to theeconomy and the increased competition,"Mr Lodge said.

"Rex needs to respond to this chal-lenge by finding growth in other areas.Queensland represents the perfect op-portunity for us given its size, geographyand absence of quality regional carriers.

Mr Lodge said Queensland was afocus for the airline given difficulties inother parts of Australia and the potentialfor new opportunities in the state afterSkytrans closed its doors in January.

"Rex will continue to inject moreaircraft into Queensland in tandem withnew opportunities opening up in thestate."

The airline currently operated fiveQueensland government route contracts, with its total network in the state compris-ing 23 destinations.

The aircraft brings to 52 the numberof Saab 340s in the Rex fleet, the airlinesaid in a statement on Friday January30, this Saab 340 was acquired fromVincent Aviation, which collapsed inMay, 2014. NEWS

Koala creations to show offamazing animal attitudesCURRUMBIN Wildlife Sanctuaryare giving Gold Coasters the chanceto get up close and personal with anAustralian icon – but you won’t beable to cuddle these giants.

About 30 koala statues will pop-ping up around the Gold Coast nextmonth as part of the Animals WithAttitude Sculpture Trail event.

The last sculpture trail attractedplenty of interest in 2013 and raised$97,000 for the Currumbin WildlifeHospital.

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuarysales and marketing director GregDaven said he hoped to raise evenmore money when the latest sculp-tures go up for auction in May.

“The last auction was a great suc-cess in both exposure for the wildlifehospital and the foundation,” he said.

“We decided after our first

sculpture trail that due to the size andscope it would be best if it happenedevery second year.”

Gold Coast-based visual effects art-ist John Cox who won an AcademyAward in 1995 for his work on themovie Babe, is the man behind thisyear’s sculptures.

“There will be some superhero-themed koala sculptures this year, aDigger sculpture commemorating theAnzac Centenary, someenvironmental-themed koalas andBlinky Bill as well,” he said. “This yearthere will be a much greater activationacross the Gold Coast.”

The Animals with Attitude koalatrail will take place between themonths of March and May with 10 ofthe sculptures to be featured at QueenElizabeth Park Coolangatta, in con-junction with Bleach Festival.

Direct China flights to Cairns ‘are now critical’

NICK DALTON

A TOURISM leader is callingfor urgent action to get regulardirect flights from China toCairns.

Tourism Tropical NorthQueensland chief executiveAlex de Waal said internation-al links were the quickest andeasiest way to get Chinese tothe region as domestic servicesget tied up in bottlenecks.

“Domestic services are fastbecoming a bottleneck, con-straining international visitoraccess to Tropical NorthQueensland with airlinesfocused on building returns,”he told more than 200 peopleat the ANZ Bank Yum ChaBusiness Lunch yesterday.

Mr de Waal said the bottle-necks at Sydney, Brisbane andMelbourne airports were theresult of airlines focusing onensuring their aircraft were fullinstead of adding more flights.

“Sometimes there are noseats available (on domesticflights to Cairns),” Mr de Waalsaid.

He also warned that Aus-tralia was not getting a goodshare of Chinese tourists.

“Growth to Tropical NorthQueensland has been strong, however Australia is not get-ting an appropriate share ofthe huge growth in total travelout of China,” he said.

Mr de Waal said Australiawas getting just 464,000 visi-tors a year from 100 millionChinese outbound travellers,or 0.46 per cent, yet SouthAfrica was attracting 4 percent, 10 times Australia’s share.

Cairns Airport chief execu-tive Kevin Brown said the in-crease in daily China Easternflights from Shanghai for Chi-nese New Year celebrationswere proving their worth, in-creasing from 12 last year to 28in 2015.

“Last year direct flightsbrought 6000 people of the20,000 who came to the re-gion,” he said. “This year I ex-pect 15,000-16,000 to comedirect, 13,000 of those onChina Eastern flights.

“To make new direct servi-ces from China to Cairns areality we now have to lobbythe Federal Government to

lend their support by providingincentives for airlines andreducing passenger movementcharges. Chinese visitors willstay in a destination for an av-erage of five nights if they can

access it by non-stop flights. Ifthey have to reach the desti-nation by a connecting dom-estic service their average stayis only 2.5 nights.

“That means we have the

potential to double our yieldfrom Chinese visitors by push-ing them from connectingflights to non-stop. Chinesevisitor numbers to Guam areshowing strong growth, so we

need to ensure they are awareof the direct services to Cairnsfrom Guam as another accessroute to our destination.”See the Chinese New Year guide in the Weekend Post on February 21

EDITORIAL

Parallelshighlightdilemma REMARKABLE parallels exist betweenthe oil city of Edmonton and the tourismcity of the Gold Coast.

Until yesterday, Edmonton was biddingfor the right to host the 2022 Common-wealth Games – an event to run four yearsafter the Gold Coast hosts its Games.

But it was not as though the Canadiancity rushed into lodging its bid with its eyesclosed. Edmonton hosted a previous Com-monwealth Games – 37 years ago – andremains committed to doing so again.

With its 2022 bid derailed by oil prices,Edmonton now intends mounting a chal-lenge for the 2026 event. When it first putup its hand to run a $1 billion-plus event for2022, oil was selling at $100 a barrel, but thecity reported yesterday that with theplunge in price to $50 a barrel, the provinceof Alberta withdrew and left the way clearfor Durban to host the African continent’sfirst Commonwealth Games.

Edmonton is acknowledged as one ofthe fastest growing cities in North America,if not the fastest, much like the Gold Coastis seen as one of the fastest growing cities inAustralia.

The Canadian city’s population is nowalmost double what it was when it ran itsfirst Games in 1978.

Similarly, the Gold Coast-Tweed is ontrack to double its population between nowand 2050, taking it from more than605,000 now to 1.2 million – a growth ratepresenting significant opportunities thatwill be highlighted in a presentation to theGold Coast business community thismorning by demographer Bernard Salt.

Edmonton was banking on investmentand development in preparation for 2022to provide the infrastructure revamp need-ed to keep up with its booming population.

Back in 1978, the city was able to open itslight rail transit system in time for theGames, and its Commonwealth Stadiumbecame home to the Canadian FootballLeague’s Edmonton Eskimos.

Our city’s main Games stadium at Car-rara, where track and field events will bestaged in 2018, is already home to the GoldCoast Suns AFL side.

Gold Coast commuters and tourists al-ready enjoy the benefits of the first stage ofour light rail, but the city understands theneed to extend that transport system tolink with heavy rail from Brisbane and itsinternational airport in time for the 2018Games.

Our challenge is to make the govern-ment-in-waiting, whichever colour it maybe, and the public service mandarins inBrisbane, understand how and why that isso important.

Like the economic, sporting and socialbenefits Canada enjoyed after 1978, theGold Coast and Queensland stand to ben-efit from the Games legacy for decades be-yond 2018, provided sensible decisions aremade now.

With the city’s population taking off likea rocket, it is puzzling that the Gold Coastshould have to fight to be heard in its callsfor infrastructure development.

Surely the reason should be obvious.
