Everything begins when you ship your dentalscrap to Argen via FedEx. Argen supplies youroffice with a FREE shipping kit and pays allshipping costs, including insuring your shipment forno extra charge. When your scrap is received
at Argen, technicians carefully document thecontents of your package under strict securityprotocol and send you a confirmation E-mail of thepackage’s arrival along with an estimated date ofcompletion. What follows is an intricate proceduredesigned specifically to maximize the value of yourprecious scrap.
In preparation for the first melt, a disk mill isused to crush the scrap, and proprietary flux isadded to extract even the smallest particles ofprecious metals. After the first melt, the materialsare cooled, the slag is removed, and the metals go
back into the fire for a secondmelt. During the second melt avacuum pin tube sample is takenwhile the metals are in a moltenstate. This insures a homogenousmix and a true representation ofthe amounts of each metalpresent in the scrap. Threesamples are then dissolved andanalyzed by expert chemistsusing a sophisticated ICP
machine that reads with 99.995% accuracy. Eachbatch is tested against controls, giving a perfectlyclear reading of how much precious metal is in alot of scrap and how much it is worth.
The superior customer service that accompaniesthe process also sets Argen’s refining services apartfrom others. patient education
san diego review I 5
Do you find that many of your patients areapprehensive or unwilling to accept your
recommended treatment? Are you losing patientsat a rapid rate? Leading dental consultants havesuggested that the average case acceptance rate isonly from 30% to 40%, and that number drops to13% on cases costing more than $5,000. Ninetypercent of patients don’t accept treatment becauseof a lack of education.
The best way to combat the down economy, say the consultants, is to focus on your existingpatients through improved patient education.Better understanding equals higher treatmentacceptance. Let Guru help!
Guru is a company that provides educationalsoftware to determine proper dental care. With Gurusoftware, you can present colorful, easy-to-understandvideo animations to your patients. If a picture is “worth
a thousand words,” then avideo is worth a million. WithGuru’s patented “Stop, Drawand Teach” technology, it isquick and simple for you toinvolve your patients in theirown dental needs. You can drag each patient’s X-rays and images into acustomized treatment plan. Animations are saved, sowhen your patient comes back six months or a yearlater, you both can easily review the information.
Even with this powerful communication tool, doctors are faced with the problem that 87% of allpatients’ significant financial decisions are made athome with their loved ones. Since patients onlyremember about 10% of what has been presented, the probability that all the important informationgets conveyed to the spouse is minimal.
Guru: The Link to a HealthyPractice in a Down EconomyBy Jerry Babcock
Guru is education software.
Educating one patient with Guru.
Fortunately, Guru not only allows you to e-mailthe presentation to the patient but also allows youto include your voice, thanking your patient fortheir trust in proceeding with the necessarytreatment. After the patient reviews the e-mailedpresentation with their spouse, both can betterunderstand why the patient’s dental needs far
outweigh the flat-screen TV they mayhave been considering.
A 2011 study showed a 27.83%increase in case acceptance forpractices incorporating Guru into theirstandard of care. It is the link thatcreates healthy patients and a healthypractice.

1. You traveled to Pelton & Crane in Oregon
to participate in a Driven to Excellence course.
What are your thoughts on that trip and
what impact did that have on the buildout of
your practice?
It was a great experience! I know how to performdentistry, but I have no idea about the flow/form/function of the dental office. Instead of trial anderror, I learned the principles of design that allowmaximum production and decreased stress. Ourdoctors, staff, and patients love the flow of theoffice. I’d recommend going to the equipmentmanufacturer’s factory (Pelton & Crane) to anydoctor who is thinking of starting or remodeling a dental office.
2. What were your reasons for wanting to move
and expand your practice?
We simply outgrew our old space! My sister and I worked together for almost 2 years and decidedto partner up. We provide excellent service to ourpatients; love the community we are in; andwanted a bigger space that would allow us todeliver our services to a larger patient base.
3. Tell us about the timeline of your project from
starting to look for a location to completion.
The entire project took one year and three months.Dr. Janice and I decided to partner up in January2011. We then started looking for a location. It tookus a while to find the right location: not too far from
A + Family DentistryDr. Justene Doan & Dr. Janice Doan, www.aplusfamilydentistry.comInterview by: Christy Conway, Field Sales Consultant; Photography by: Wander Aguiar
our old office and easily accessible from the mainfreeways (8, 15, and 805). We secured the locationlast September and started space planning andconstruction right away.
4. Why did you decide to work with Henry Schein
as a partner for this project?
The staff at Henry Schein Dental San Diego madethe difference. Christy, Brent, Matt, and Landon aregreat. They always stayed in close communicationwith us—and we felt that they always had our bestinterests at heart.
5. What technology do you currently have in the
practice and what are your plans for future
technology?
We are fully computerized with Dentrix and Dexis. In the future, we would like to purchase E4DCAD/CAM technology to provide our patients withmore diversified treatment options while increasingour productivity and efficiency.
12DF7063_SanDiegoReview #4 6/4/12 8:30 AM Page 6
6. What Social Media platforms are you currently
using to promote your practice?
Our main social media platforms are Facebook,Twitter, Google +, and YouTube. These sites havebeen a great way to communicate with our currentpatient base and attract new patients through ourexpanded online presence. Our Web site has beena great spot for us to connect all of these sites.YouTube has been especially useful to post andshare video testimonials from our patients andplace them on our Web site along with other socialmedia platforms. We post regularly on all of theseplatforms (at least once a week) on topicsincluding, but not limited to, dentistry. In addition,we also started our own blog page on variousdental topics that some of our patients want tolearn more about. We have also made an accounton an up-and-coming social media platform calledPinterest, an online pinboard that allows you to pin, organize, and share things that are important to ourpatients. The world of social media and onlinecommunities is always changing so it is extremelyimportant to stay current. We keep our eyes open
and join online communities with help from ourvery own Henry Schein Consultant Christy Conway. We also attend her quarterly “Christy’s SocialMedia Study Club” meetings at the Henry ScheinDental branch in Sorrento Valley to learn moreabout ways to expand our online presence.
7. What is your favorite aspect of your new
office?
It’s set up for enhanced production and reducedstress. We use our consultation rooms and stafflounge, which we didn’t have before, all the time. The new equipment is easy to use andcomfortable. It provides a pleasant workenvironment. We are very proud of it.
8. Your business is about creating healthy,
beautiful smiles. What differentiates your
practice and how do you make your
patients smile?
We truly care about our patients and view them aswe do friends or family. We take all the time it
needs to raise a patient’s awareness of what’sgoing on in their mouth; gain their commitment totreatment; and work with them to achieve the bestresults possible. We don’t give up on any patientwho values their teeth.
9. What did you like most about designing your
office from scratch?
We could take inventory of how we’ve beenpracticing dentistry; plan on where we want to goin the next 5–10 years; and design the office tosupport our plan.
10. What is it like working with your sister
every day?
I couldn’t ask for a better partner! We are similar in many ways, but also act as balance wheels foreach other. We each have various strengths andperspectives that work together to produce a veryfine partnership.

OralDNA
OralDNA Labs was founded in2008 to provide clinical diagnostic
testing to dentistry. Medical doctorsutilized the clinical laboratory as adiagnostic tool, dentists had not. Six months into OralDNA’s existence,Quest Diagnostics, the world’s leading provider of diagnostic testing, information, and services acquiredOralDNA Labs, Inc. Ourcompany’s goal is to help thedental profession achievebetter clinical outcomesby providing reliable, definitive, and cost-effectivediagnostic tests thatdrive the detectionand prognosis ofdisease at an earlier, more treatablestage. OralDNA currently offers threesalivary DNA tests; two related toperiodontal disease and one for thehuman papillomavirus (HPV).
In an effort to make a moreinformed assessment of patients withperiodontal disease, we offer twosalivary DNA tests for dentalprofessionals—MyPerioPath® andMyPerioID® PST®. This reflects theimportance of accurate patientassessment. Patients may be at riskfor tooth loss and emerging researchsuggests that periodontal disease islinked to certain systemic diseases. The MyPerioPath test detects thespecific type of bacteria that ispresent in the oral cavity. Once the
dental professional knows whichbacteria are in the mouth and at whatrelative quantity, the office candetermine a treatment plan that’s rightfor the patient. The MyPerioID® PST®
test can tell the clinician if a patienthas differences in his/her DNA thatmight mean he/she is at greater risk of more serious disease. The
information provided by these two tests helps the cliniciancome up with a treatment planthat’s right for each patient.
One size does not fit all.OralDNA also has
a test for the HPVvirus—OraRisk® HPV.Traditionally, patients
presenting with oralcancers were older in age and hadalcohol- and tobacco-use risk factors.Recently a much younger subset ofthe population has presented with oralcancer. The HPV virus has beenimplicated in these oral cancers.
TheOraRisk® HPV test can tell if a patient has an HPV infection in theoral cavity. If so, they might have agreater risk of getting HPV-related oral cancer. Like most cancers, it’simportant to strive for early detection. If the clinicians know that the patienthas an HPV infection, they canmonitor them more closely for signsof oral cancer and consider furthertesting or referral.
All three tests are performed usinga noninvasive oral rinse sample that is
collected in the dental office. Thepatient simply swishes (in the case ofOraRisk HPV; swishes and gargles) asterile saline solution in his/her mouthand spits it into a tube. CAMLOG, Henry Schein’s implant division, recently moved its U.S. base to Carlsbad,
California to allow more efficient operations andincreased support for the growing implantbusiness. The support you need to grow yourpractice by offering the surgical placement ofimplants in your own practice with the support ofHenry Schein is right here in San Diego. Today, only 3%–5% of the cases that couldappropriately be treated with an implant are beingperformed. get fit @ work!
During my years as a healthand fitness professional, I
have found that assisting clientsin achieving optimal health mostoften requires change in areasthat are often undermined andoverlooked. Lifestyle habits, mental fortitude, discipline, education, and the application ofkey techniques are centralelements that dictate
the potential of the individual’s healthand well being.
Here are my top 10 tips for laying the groundwork of optimalhealth. Upon this foundation, recommendations for nutrition andexercise can be capitalized on much moreeffectively than without these guidelines in place.
1GET ORGANIZED: Why? If we are out oforder our lives are less productive.
Why take on a new fitness program if we can’teven find the time to stay consistent with it or seeit through thoroughly? Start with this process firstas life can easily throw many distractions our waythat can sabotage progress.
Let’s clear out the clutter from the office, thecar, the home, etc. Let’s be as efficient and asorganized as possible; it will also lend itself to agreater sense of control, which breeds confidenceand increases the likelihood of compliance with anew health initiative.
2SLEEP: Now that we are sure that our time is being managed efficiently and we are
organized in the home, office, and at work, we canfocus on being more diligent about sleeping a full night to give our bodies the much neededrecovery time from all of our days’ stress. Isuggest making the bedroom a sanctuary that isfree from any distractions. Turn off any visualstimulation such as TV, cell phone, iPad, etc. wellover 30 minutes prior to bedtime. Making a
conscious effort to get at least 7–8 hours of sleepwill have a profound effect.
3MORNING ROUTINE: Getting up alittle earlier than usual to make sure that
we have plenty of time to get ready withoutrushing, breathing deeply, and enjoying a full
breakfast are very important. This time of daysets the tone for the rest of our day and, if it
is riddled with stress, we can expect therest of our day to be stressful as well.Stress is detrimental to health, so let’snot even put ourselves in a position tosuffer its consequences.
4HYDRATION: Carrying a waterbottle around and ensuring that we
are drinking at least 64–96 ounces per dayof filtered water is vital for optimal health. Why try to exercise harder or improve nutritionalhabits if hydration is not even addressed?
5LOW-GLYCEMIC EATING: Let’s take thetime to learn about eating foods that have a
low immediate impact on blood sugar so that we

can keep blood sugar steady throughout the daywithout spikes and insulin crashes. Seek
the education; it is a worthwhileinvestment.
6NUTRITIONALSUPPLEMENTATION:
Ensuring that your body is fully and optimally nourished simply
requires supplementation. Consumingnutritional support items that are
90%–95% bio-available, such as isotonic-capable supplements are the most idealmethod of doing so. Getting complete nutritionfrom food alone in the United States is nearlyimpossible. Did you know that an apple today onlyhas 20% vitamin C activity when compared to thesame apple from only 50 years ago?
7PREPLAN & PREPARE FOODS:Eating every 3 hours is also extremely
important for maintaining health and energy.Haphazard eating really doesn’t work. Itemsthat can be easily packed and carried to theoffice that make great staple foods are: soft-boiled organic eggs, washed and
chopped fresh fruit, nut butters, bean salads, lentil soup, rice pilafs, yogurt
parfaits, brown rice proteinsmoothies, mixed walnuts/almonds/raisins, choppedvegetables, etc. If all elsefails, sign up for a good meal delivery service to getcomplete meals.

8HIGH-INTENSITY CIRCUIT TRAINING:Barring any pre-existing limitations, moving
from core exercises to lower body and upper bodypull and push exercises in a quick fashion with
minimal rest is an ideal methodof exercising for a variety of
reasons. It results in greatermuscular endurance, increased cardio-respiratorycapacity, maximal fat burn,
and strength/hypertrophygains—all of this in 25–30
minutes per session. Regardless of age, gender, or physical limitation, I have all of myclients working through some form of circuittraining; it also keeps the time engaging.
9RECOVERY: Massage, Epsom salt baths, steam baths, jacuzzi baths, stretching,
meditation and breathing, and yoga are all veryimport and effective methods of recovering fromthe stress of life and from exercise. Spacing outexercise sessions andemploying recoverytechniques are essentialfor optimal health.
10EMOTIONALHEALTH: Life
balance; creativeexpression outlets; andpositive, supportiverelationships are also highlyimportant for an individual’s sense of well beingand for achieving optimal health. My tip is to stayconnected to close friends and family; laughfrequently; and find one or many outlets forcreative expression to engage in often.
