FOREWORD This Malaysian Standard was developed by the Technical Committee on Floriculture under the authority of the Industry Standards Committee on Agriculture. This Malaysian Standard is the first revision of Fresh Cut Chrysanthemum - Specification (First revision). Major modifications in this revision are as follow; a) Change of Table 1 Grade requirements; and

b) Change in Table 2. Orchid Cut Flower Length Code

This Malaysian Standard cancels and replaces MS 1354:1994. Compliance with a Malaysian Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations.

Fresh cut orchids - Specification (First revision)

1 Scope

This Malaysian Standard prescribes the quality requirements of fresh cut orchids for all genus in the family Orchidaceae for commercial purposes; 2 Normative references The following normative references are indispensable for the application of this standard. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the normative references (including any amendments) applies. MS 1784, Crop Commodities - Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) MS 1784: Part 6, Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) - Part 6: Flowers and Ornamentals Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority Act, 1965 (Act 141) and Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Grading, Packaging and Labelling of Agricultural Produce) Regulations, 2008 3 Terms and definitions For the purpose of this specification, the following terms and definitions shall apply. 3.1 Appropriate stage of development The number of opened flowers that show their colour. 3.2 Clean Free from extraneous matter such as pesticide residue, spider web, dirt and other foreign matters. 3.3 Damage Any injury caused by mechanical and pests which affect the overall appearance, shelf life and quality of the orchid. 3.4 Defects Injuries due to developmental damages (deformity, abnormality and marks of recovery from pests) and physiological factors (chlorosis, scar and chilling injury). 3.5 Floral preservatives Gas or substrate containing sugar (sucrose or glucose), germicide, acid and anti-ethylene agent for treatment of the orchid allowing buds and flowers to retain their freshness.

3.6 Fresh The orchids shall be free from wilting due to water loss 3.7 Normally formed Free from biological deformation, such as irregular shape of stem and flower, that affects its original form. 3.8 Pests Pests are insects, fungi, bacteria, virus, plant origin and other organisms that are harmful and cause damage to the orchid. 3.8.1 Mechanical damage Damages such as bruises, cuts, blemishes and breakage on buds, flowers and stem. 3.8.2 Pest damage Damages due to pests such as chlorosis, necrosis, rot, decay, cuts, holes and wilt. 3.9 A unit of presentation The smallest unit in each presentation (box and the like). 3.10 Whole Each flower (inflorescene) shall be complete with stem, flowers and buds (if any). The whole fresh cut orchid shall be referred to as the orchid. 4 Minimum requirements 4.1 The orchid shall have been carefully harvested, reached an appropriate stage of development and may have been treated with acceptable floral preservatives. 4.2 The orchid shall be whole, fresh, clean, free from damages, normally formed and free from pests. 4.3 The number of opened flowers shall not be less than 40 % of total flowers on the stem. For Cattleya, one flower is acceptable. 4.4 The development and condition of the orchid shall be such as to enable them to withstand handling and transport, ensuring that they arrive in satisfactory condition at the place of destination.

5 Grading 5.1 Grade requirements The Orchid shall be classified into three grades according to their general appearance and physical characteristics.

Premium The Orchid shall be of superior quality, fresh, clean and free from damages and defects of development. Stems shall be strong to support the flowers and buds. All parts of the Orchid shall have the flower form and color typical of the genus except for the number of opened flowers which shall not be less than 65% of total flowers on the stem.

Not more than 5% of the Orchid, by number, does not meet the requirements of Premium grade, but shall meet Grade 1 requirements.

1 The Orchid shall be of good quality, fresh, clean and practically free from damages and defects of development Stems shall be practically strong to support the flowers and buds. All parts of orchid cut flowers shall have the flower form and color typical of thegenus except for the number of opened flowers which shall not be less than 55% of total flowers on the stem.

Not more than 10% of the Orchid, by number, does not meet the requirements of Grade 1, but shall meet Grade 2 requirements.

2 The Orchid shall satisfy the minimum requirements. Stems shall be reasonably strong to support the flowers and buds.

Not more than 10 % of the Orchid, by number, may vary from the requirements of Grade 2. The damages and defects must not impair the utility of the Orchid.

5.2 Classification and sizing 5.2.1 Size Sizes of each species of orchids are based on the length of flower stem, the total number of flowers and number of blooming flowers per stem. Size specifications are outlined in Tables 1 and Table 2 below:

5.2.2 The difference in the maximum and minimum length of the orchid The difference in the maximum and minimum length of the orchid in a unit presentation shall be as follows:

5.2.3 Classes In all classes, 10 % of the orchid, by number, may vary from the length requirements of the length code, but shall not exceed 10 cm provided the length does not fall below the lower limit of the length code.

6 Packaging 6.1. A unit of presentation shall consist of 1,2,3,4 or 5 of the orchid and each package must consist of multiple of ten. NOTE. However these above provision shall not apply if seller and buyer have expressly agreed to derogate from them. 6.2 A unit of presentation shall contain the orchid of the same genus and variety (cultivar), and of the same grade and size code. 6.3 Each package may contain the orchid of all genus and of various size codes but shall be of the same grade.

6.4 The orchid shall be packed in clean, non-toxic and suitable protective packaging materials and boxes to provide protection from hazards of handling and transportation.

7 Labelling The package shall be labeled with the following particulars: 7.1 Name of produce including variety (cultivar); 7.2 Grade and size code; 7.3 The number of orchid per unit of presentation and number of units, or total number of

orchid; 7.4 Name, address and code of growers; 7.5 Name, address and code of exporter and/or importer; 7.6 Place and country of origin; and 7.7 Label ‘PRODUCE OF MALAYSIA’ (for export purposes). 8 Sampling The number of samples for certification purpose shall be based on accepted statistical sampling scheme as agreed upon between the certifying agency and the supplier and/or exporter. 9 Compliance with the standard Each produce which is inspected by a competent authority and found conforming to the requirements of this Malaysian Standard at the time of inspection, shall be deemed to comply with this standard. 10 Certification mark Each package, may by arrangement with a recognised certification body, be marked with the certification mark of that body, provided the product conforms to the requirements of this Malaysian Standard. 11 Farm requirements The farm practices should be in accordance with the requirements described in MS 1784 and MS 1784: Part 6. 12 Legal requirements The produce in all other aspects shall comply with the requirements of the legislation currently enforced in Malaysia.
