IT started as an idea to help discipline some boys in a SundaySchool class, but 125 years laterthe Boys’ Brigade is still goingstrong.

The organisation, founded by William Smith, is the oldest uniformedchildren’s group in the world … and itall began in Glasgow.

Smith was a teacher in theNorth Woodside Mission Sunday School. The boys in his classwere a bit of a handfuland he asked others ifthey had any ideas tohelp him keep control of them.

He was a lieutenantin the 1st LanarkshireRifle Volunteers andsomeone remarked a bit ofhis ‘Army discipline’ mightbe what was needed. That gaveSmith, later to become Sir William, theinspiration to start the Boys’ Brigade.

That group in the North WoodsideMission Halls became the 1st GlasgowCompany, and today there are companies and battalions all overBritain and as far afield as Malaysia,Nigeria and South Africa.

Smooth FM DJ Dave Marshall was a member in the 1950s“I was in the 128th Glasgow Company. We lived in Williamwood Avenue and it was based atWilliamwood Church, just across the road.

“My abiding memory was the uniform andmarching – the ‘pillbox’ hats and the amount of effort we put in to make sure we looked smartfor inspection.

“The hat had two white bands around it thathad to be pristine, and I was forever polishing mybelt buckle and my shoes, and using sandshoewhitener making sure those bands were clean!

“Part of the thinking was to teach you thingsyou would not be taught at school.

“I remember working towards certificates fordifferent things. I received one for semaphore andanother for Bible knowledge.

“But it was fun. It had to be, otherwise I wouldnever have gone.

“At that time every boy was a member of something, whether it was the BBs or the Scouts. There was a lot of rivalry between ourselves andthe Scouts.

“By the time we were in our late teens theScouts had the upper hand – they were closer tothe Guides so were nearer the girls!”

STV news presenter JohnMacKay was a member ofthe 167th Glasgow company“For me it was football and I think that was a big draw for a lot of members.

“Look at some of the famousnames who used to be in theBoys’ Brigade – Ally McCoist,Sir Alex Ferguson, MurdoMacLeod. A lot of those who

played football for the BB went on to become professional players.

“People make too much of the religious elementto the organisation. It played its part and weattended church and marched on certain days, but that was only one aspect of it.

“It was great fun - we went off to camp, youmade new friends and a lot of the people you wentto school with were also members.

“I have fond memories of it all and it was important socially because it gave kids somethingto do. It gave us the opportunity to play football in the middle of winter and we learned new skills in an enjoyable way.

“It is a great organisation and I am still involvedwith my company. We have an annual dinner toraise money for the BB. I’m proud of my association.”

towards their Queen’s Award – theorganisation’s highest award – memberstoday are involved in a wide variety of activities, from snowboarding in the Highlands, swimming in theMediterranean, and playing football, to helping numerous charity projects.

The organisation still has a Christian heart – its motto Sure And

Steadfast comes from the Bible –but the BB attracts people from

all faiths, places, schools andbackgrounds.

In Glasgow, more than4000 boys and teenagersswell the ranks of itscompanies, and in itscelebration year theorganisation wants toattract more.

During 2008 therewill be parties, marches

and events across the worldto celebrate its 125th birthday.

To mark the occasion, theEvening Times has created this celebra-tory pull-out, including photographs ofdozens of companies.

You will also find contact details onthe back page for the organisation, where your nearest company is andwhere and when they meet.
