TRANSCRIPT
We have new digs! Aft er a year of planning and several months of construction, we are fi rmly planted in our new offi ce, and we couldn’t be more excited or happier with the outcome. It’s been an adventure for sure. Just like many of you who have lived through a remodel, we also worked through ours, meeting every printing deadline so you never missed a word. It took a bucket of patience and a barrel of good humor, but it was totally worth it.
We moved into these offi ces in summer 2003. Our furniture came from a friend who had bought a truckload of offi ce furniture from Purina in St. Louis. While wait-ing for a buyer, he had stored it all in his barn for quite a while. We spent days clean-ing out rat nests, spider eggs, cow something or other, hay and mud. It was such fun! But, we thought we had moved on up to the east side. It was our DE-lux apartment in the sky.
Back then, there were fewer than 10 of us. Aft er two expansions and 10 years, there are now 23 full-timers and a bevy of part-timers. As our numbers changed, so did our needs. Example: At one time we had more than 40 fi ling cabinets, and they were all overfl owing. We’re down to about 15 and could consolidate to fewer, but we need them to set stuff on. We print magazines but we’ve embraced the digital age.
We were spurred into remodel-action by two events. Th e fi rst was an open house at ADsmith Advertising in Springfi eld to see their newly remodeled offi ces. We were impressed. And, okay, jealous. Th en, we went to a magazine conference in White Plains, New York, where we saw Westchester Magazine’s new offi ces. It got us think-ing: “If we could remodel our offi ces, what would we want the outcome to be?”
More collaborative space. More private meeting space. A real reception area. A full, working kitchen. Departments grouped together instead of spread out. Upgrad-ed interiors that more accurately refl ected the magazines we produce. Oh, we had no shortage of ideas.
One thing led to another, and the next thing you know, we had a building permit and were on our way to a new offi ce.
Our design and construction team was second to none, and at times they pulled off miracles. We are so grateful for them and all the suppliers who worked to make our remodel happen. Th roughout the project, we invited you to follow our progress with daily updates on 417mag.com, and now we invite you to see the results. In the next pages you’ll learn about our needs and how they were met by the best in the biz.
I think you’ll agree we fi nally got our piece of the pie. I hope you fi nd it as delicious as we do.

Before the RemodelIt wasn’t a horrible office. Then again, it wasn’t great. It had been put together in the way a sightless person might sew together a suit. At best, it was haphazard.
In 2003 we bought a single 1,200-square-foot office suite. With only 10 employees, it worked just fine. Then we out-grew it and bought the space next door, which added anoth-er 1,200 square feet. Room to stretch! But not for long. We then bought the space next door for a total of 5,000 square feet. Perfect. And, space wise, it was for a long time. But useful? Not so much.
Take a look at the before pictures on this page, and then see the dramatic changes our team of experts, led by Kathe Bruton of Bruton Design Services and Shannon Lee of Rock Solid Construction, created.

Now
After 10 years in our office space, we went from a hodge-podge floor plan and used furniture to a
vibrant, beautiful office and event space.
In creating our new space, we had lots of wants and even more needs. In the next few pages you’ll see how Kathe Bruton’s design skills, coupled with Shannon Lee’s construction management know-how, met both. Specifically, we wanted a beautiful lobby, something that offered a wow-factor for visitors. We needed more meeting space that was separate from our break area. We needed more visitor waiting space for when photography sessions take place. We wanted an office that could double as an event space for us as well as our clients. We desperately needed storage space. We wanted more security on our entries for when we work late into the night. We wanted technology throughout the office for webinars, training videos, group meetings, showcasing our event videos and, okay, probably watching a little March Madness.
We invite you to turn the page to see the results and to come by and see us when you’re in the neighborhood. We are so proud of our new office and would love to give you a tour.

Our lobby now more accurately reflects the tone and feel of our magazines and is much more welcoming. We
absolutely love the sleek, stainless steel sign created for us by Amelex. The gallery joins church (the editorial
side) and state (the business side) and provides the perfect space to display Susan Sommer-Luarca’s painting
of the October 2013 cover of 417 Magazine. Two sets of sliding barn doors from Southern Supply Company create an open, circular traffic pattern for events, and
allow us to close the rooms for private meetings.

Our new conference rooms, coupled with the kitchen, are the heart of our offi ce. Instead of large conference room tables, we went with small tables that can be put together for large meetings or broken apart for smaller gatherings and events. An accordion door between the two rooms gives us the fl exibility to hold more than one meeting at a time, as each room has its own fl at screen TV. Here’s a confession: We dearly love dry-erase boards, but that doesn’t mean we want our laundry out for all to see. Kathe cleverly hid our dry-erase boards behind drapes that coordinate with the accordion doors. Because the perimeter walls are alive with color, Kathe purposely chose a neutral palette for the conference room walls. In fact, it’s called Barren Plain. However, trendy lighting from Metro Appliances & More keeps things from looking plain.

The kitchen is our favorite part of the new office. From the Jenn-Air appliances and
the Kohler large-basin sink and faucet, to the useful small appliances and utensils
from Everything Kitchens, it is such a treat to have a full, working kitchen.
Southern Supply designed the kitchen cabinet layout with a combination of deep
drawers for cookware and cabinets for storage. And, check out the leather and chrome cabinet hardware. Wowza. The
granite counters provide us an (almost) damage proof prep and serving surface.
Another accordion door allows us to close off the kitchen when not in use. Our new
kitchen will get tons of use when we prepare and style food for photos or have
catered events and staff potlucks.
