History of Flight Simulators

History— Early Simulators

Made of two half barrels— Link Trainers

First simulator Pitch, Roll, Yaw

— Visual Displays “Motion board”

– Move camera through terrain model

— Modern 6 degrees of motion Full video screen

Advantages of Flight Simulators

Less dangerous— Learn to fly without risk of crashing

Navigation Instruments

Emergencies— Simulate different scenarios without risk of crashing

Stall Engine failure

Less expensive— Gasoline prices— Airport fees

SU Flight Simulator

Fidelity MOTUS 622i — Donated by Ted Frantz

Class of 1980— Installed in summer of 2008— 6 degrees of motion— Can install new panels to simulate cockpits of aircraft

Currently set up for Cessna 172— One of three universities to have this system

Imperial College London, West Virginia University, and Syracuse University
