M A Y • MIGHT
M a y /M ig h t - P o s i b i l i d a d
E n l a s unidades 1 y 2 vimos e l u s o d e c a n y could para expresar po sibi lidad. Tam bien
podemos u s a r m a y y might para expresar posibilidad
M a y y might pueden expresar ambos u n a posibilidad e n e l f u t u r o . S o n m u y parecidos,
pero, might es algo m as remoto, por ejemplo:
m ay sugiere entre un 50-60 p or ciento d e posibilidades d e q u e suceda algo.
might sugiere entre un 30-40 por ciento de posibilidades:
It m ay rain on Sunday. It's so cold that it m i g h t even snow.Puede que llueva el domingo. Race tantofrio que podria incluso nevar.
N o se suele usar m ay o might para
p r e g u n t a r sobre posibilidades. E n v e z
de ello se usa el verbo think:
D o you think you m i g h t leave your job?^Crees quepodrias dejar tu trabajo?
Se puede usar m ay y might para hablar sobre
la posibilidad en el presente. E n este caso, esta-
m o s haciendo una deduction basada en nues t ro
conocimiento de la situation:
S h e m a y / m i g h t b e busy today.
Puede que este ocupada hoy.
U n a v e z mas , might expresa u n a posibilidad q u e e s u n poco m a s remota:
It's not likely, but h e m i g h t be at the l ibrary. No es muy probable, pero el podria estar en la biblioteca.
S e puede usa r t an to m ay have c o m o
might have + participio para hablar so-bre una posibilidad en el pasado. Se pueden
u s a r ambos verbos para sugerir u n a incer-
t i d u m b r e sobre si una action sucedio o no :
S h e m a y n o t h a v e waited a t t h e
