Between the Eden Town Board preliminary budget and the passed budget of November 14, 2013, an increase of about $66,379.00 oc-curred. This budget will result in an increase to a homeowner with a $100,000.00 assessed evaluation of $1.00.

Most Eden residents that I have talked to were not aware that the salary of the Code Enforcement Officer, Scott Henry, has been reduced to half time. Why? Comments made to me by some of the Town Board mem-bers were, “We needed to make cuts; many departments were trimmed slightly to meet our goals; we no longer need a full time code enforce-ment officer.” These were a few of the comments. In my opinion, there has been a vendetta against this employee for some time.

The cost of keeping the code enforcement officer on full time would result in adding about 50 cents to the $1.00 mentioned previously for a $100,000.00 assessment.

The possibility of losing a 20 year competent code enforcement officer to part time will probably result in delay of issuing building permits, curtail the needed time to properly review permit requests, spend time with residents and contractors to answer their questions, and finding ample time to properly do inspections. The responsibility of this posi-tion has increased rather than decreased as some may have suggested. I challenge the Eden Town Board to check the records as to past and current activities of the code officer.

Brother of late Raymond, Dolores Crowe and Joan (Lawrence) Fro-elich. 19 grandchildren, three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Don was known for his full Irish sense of humor. He was a parishioner and Eucharis-tic Minister of Immaculate Conception Church; where he served on many com-mittees. He was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Eden VFW # 8265 and the American Legion Newell-Faulkner Post # 880. He worked at Buf-falo Crushed Stone and be-longed to the International Union of Operating Engi-neers Local 17 for 40 years. He served his country in the United States Navy and was a member of Navy SeaBees Construction Bat-talion. A Memorial Mass was held Saturday, Decem-ber 7, 2013 at Immaculate Conception Church, Eden. BREAKFAST WITH SANTA The Sons of the American Legion hosted a Breakfast with Santa on Sunday, December 8th at the Eden Legion Post 880. About 300 people enjoyed a pancake breakfast, visit with Santa, and an ornament craft. The legion family decorated the hall beautifully for the holiday event. Next Spring, watch for details on Breakfast with the Easter Bunny. Thank you for the community support.

Pictured here is a group of workmen in front of the Eclipse Building in Eden. It is thought the picture was taken about 1948. The Eclipse Factory is across from the present Kazoo Factory and is still in use today. Leland (Drag) Richardson, who invented a portable picnic grill, manufactured the grills in this building. In 1935 the Ford Motor Company became interested in marketing them through their dealers. This created a national interest. By 1951, he was producing 2200 a day. For more information on this building, see Doris Anderson's History (1975), vol. 2, p. 31-32. ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCEMENT Patrick and Yvette O'Brien of Eden are happy to an-nounce the engagement of their daughter, Alexandra O'Brien to Luke Phillippi. Allie is a graduate of Cornell University with her BS in Animal Science. She is em-ployed in the family business as a commodity trader. Luke, the son of Kim Pecora and Mark Phillippi is a graduate of Southeast Lineman Training Center in Trenton, GA. He is employed at Kandey Co Construction. The couple is plan-ning an August 2014 wedding.

COMING TO AMERICA Social studies students in Greg Miller's class at SS. Pe-ter & Paul School in Hamburg, recently had the opportu-nity to experience what it was like for immigrants coming through Ellis Island at the turn of the century. Students were given a real person to impersonate and and experi-ence the various check points the immigrants had to go through before being granted citizenship in America. Pic-tured above is eighth grade student Maura Casey being interviewed by Miller at the psychological examination station.

EDEN STAMPEDE CLUB CELEBRATES WITH CLYDE'S FEED

The Eden Stampede 4-H Club had a fun time Reining in the Holiday’s with Clyde’s Feed in Hamburg! Our mem-bers had a good time baking yummy treats with their fami-lies for the event. We really liked watching all the kids, dogs, and cats sit on Santa’s lap. Thank you for supporting our club!
