WORK BREAKOUT STRUCTURE (WBS)

No, really… What is it?

A work breakdown structure (WBS), in project management and systems engineering, is a deliverable oriented breakout of a project into smaller components. It defines and groups a project's discrete work elements in a way that helps organize and define the total work scope of the project.

A work breakdown structure element may be a product, data, a service, or any combination. A WBS also provides the necessary framework for detailed cost estimating and control along with providing guidance for schedule development and control.

A WBS is not an exhaustive list of work. It is instead a comprehensive classification of project scope.

A WBS is neither a project plan, a schedule, nor a chronological listing. It specifies what will be done, not how or when.

A WBS is not an organizational hierarchy, although it may be used when assigning responsibilities.
