Key arguments presented by

Team A included: America’s re

sponsibility not to tolerate such

things as drug production and

malnutrition; the surge will pro

mote education in Afghanistan;

!"#$%&'($)$%*'$+,,-*'*.,/0&'1"#*.'the work in progress in Afghani

stan; the United States is helping

Afghanis establish a sustainable

livelihood for themselves.

“This is not a conventional

war,” Herrera said during the de

bate. “Afghanistan is the largest

producer of heroine in the world,

[producing] 92 percent of the

world’s heroine… We’re [in Af

ghanistan] to help and to teach.”

Debate Team B, which con

sisted of Danae Caldwell, Au

rora Smith, Sara Semani and re

searchers Heather Kelley, Tyler

Hamilton and Sharmaine Ramon,

argued for the exit of the United

States troops from Afghanistan.

Key arguments presented by

Team B included: Exiting Iraq

would help the U.S. economy by

not allowing war spending to ex

ceed the almost $3 trillion already

spent; Few positive accomplish

ments have been made during

the war; exiting Afghanistan will

reduce military fatalities and inju

ries.

“The exit [of United State troops

from Afghanistan] is essential to

the economy and national image,”

Aurora Martinez said during the

debate. “If they couldn’t make a

difference [in] nine years, what is

18 months going to do?”

Each team selected an expert

adviser to provide additional in

formation and advice on their

respective debate stances. The

expert chosen by Team A was

Katherine Graham, NMSU Com

munication Studies instructor.

The expert for Team B was Lt.

Col. Robert Rossow, NMSU gov

ernment professor.

The debate was not judged, but

members of the audience were en

2,/+)3%&'$,'+%4%2$',"'$.%',--,*ing arguments and submit feed

back.

Boothe said participating in the

&%5)$%' 6)*' )' 5%"%12#)0' %7-%+#ence.

“I want to be an attorney,”

Boothe said. “It was good prac

of what I have to work on to [suc

The debate was sponsored by

the NMSU Communication Stud

ies Department in association

with the Physical Science Labora

tory.

Eight members of the New Mexico State University DanceSport met their local community star partners on Nov. 15 and are preparing for the secondannual Look Who’s Dancing! competition. Look Who’s Dancing! committee member Janet Clements said the idea for the Look Who’s Dancing! competition came from the Big Band Dance Club. “We wanted to put on a competition like ‘Dancing with the Stars’ and involve community leaders,” Clements said. Clements said instead of planning on raising money for the Big Band Dance Club, she and her husband Dave went to the director of the NMSU DanceSport team, Eric Fierro. “We wanted the DanceSport team to be involved with choreography, training, and dancing with the community leaders,” Clements said. “And in return, the money raised would go to DanceSport.” Clements said the 2009 competition raised more than $12,000 for the DanceSport team, which helped the team attend a competition at Stanford University. “Before, they would take an old van to competitions,” Clements said. “But with the fundraiser contribution, they were able to !"#$ Clements said the response to the competition was more enthusiastic than the committee had anticipated. “We didn’t know if we’d have %&&'()*(+)',*'-++',.)'/0*'12345)'Theatre,” Clements said. “But then two weeks before the per6*27348)9' :)' 2)3+0;)5' ,.)' /0*'Grande [Theatre] wouldn’t be big enough.” Clements said over 2,070 people attended the event to see District Attorney Susana Martinez win the competition. “It was so exciting to see the families and kids involved,” Clements said. “It’s a great event.” According to an event press release, participants will compete

The audience will also be able to buy tokens to vote for their favorite competitors in the People’s Choice category in the 2010 competition. Fierro said the event will attempt to get local community leaders involved with the community. “I’m looking forward to getting various leaders to try something they aren’t comfortable with,” Fierro said. Fierro said the pairs set up practice times, but usually rehearse for 510 hours a week. “Everyone had a blast last year, so we’re all looking forward to this year,” Fierro said. “The committee found the people to invite to partner with the DanceSport team members,” Clements said. “The response has been really great.” Fierro said the 2010 event will
