Customer centricity is taking hold across thecompany. Thanks to your efforts we are finding new and innovative ways toimprove the customer experience.

As I review this month’s issue, I’m inspired by our team’s commitment toothers. Community Connection, our employee-run philanthropy program, ismaking a positive difference in our community. This issue highlights some ofthose efforts and reminds us how we can each help. As we celebrate theseason of giving, let’s take time to help others through volunteerism, support for your local food bank or charity and of course please rememberthe children through the ever popular Toys for Tots or your local organizationfor children.

As always, I encourage you to find time during the holidays to relax andrefresh yourself. We have a lot of work still to do this year, and we’re gettingready for another exciting year ahead!

COL Web SiteReskin The Citrix Online Web site used tobe the red-headed stepchild in thefamily of COL-related sites. Foryears it stood stagnant and drabwhile GoToMyPC.com,GoToMeeting.com and the restreceived regular content anddesign updates.

But look out – CitrixOnline.comis back, fresh from a makeoverworthy of “What Not To Wear.”

The site now matches the style of the other product sites and comes equippedwith content tailor-made for search engine optimization (what we in the industrycall “SEO”). CitrixOnline.com now has the ability to create revenue, recruitemployees and generally make us look cool.

Erik Kreis, who spurred the initiative along with Brent LaSala, said theredesigned site will work wonders for the Citrix Online image.

“It’s the first point of contact for lots of people looking into our services for thefirst time,” he said. “The new site shows them that we care about and maintaineverything we do. “Plus, the old site looked outdated.” Kreis said the redesignwas a team effort, giving props to Sarah Brown, Diane Soini, Luke Mooney,Mircea Oprea and others for their contributions.

“Community Connectionis a way to participate in fun and interesting events while also contributing to the community and raising the profile of Citrix Online.”

– Derek Piasecki

“Community Connection gets stronger with every employee who gets involved.”

– Liz Werhane

Connecting with our Communities Community Connection is Citrix Online’s employee-run corporate philanthropyprogram, chartered in 2005 to encourage employee volunteerism and supportcharitable and cultural programs for nonprofit organizations that reflect thepassions and interests of employees.

Through Community Connection, we donate money, employee-volunteerhours and goods to dozens of charitable organizations in our communities.Although we’ve made tremendous contributions already, we’re not even closeto reaching our true potential. Community Connection can multiply individualefforts. So if you’re willing to put in a little effort, here are some of the waysyou can, quite simply, help your community.• Pitch in! Citrix Online has 673 employees worldwide and a generouscompany-sponsored Volunteer Day policy. If everyone used their volunteer dayin a year, that’s potentially 5,384 hours of community service that we couldbe providing in the various communities where we live! If you don’t knowwhich organizations need help, Community Connection can help match youwith a project that you’ll care about. • Citrix Online budgets thousands of dollars to give to nonprofits. Employeescan help nonprofits they care about receive grant money for special projects bysubmitting an application to the employee-run task force. A few minutes of yourpaperwork could turn into hundreds of dollars for a nonprofit who needs our help. • Full-time employees who personally donate to nonprofits can double theirdollars through corporate matching from Citrix Systems. Contribute up to$1,000 total to one or more organizations, then send a donation receipt alongwith this corporate matching form to our corporate offices in Ft. Lauderdale. • Community Connection makes giving convenient. It organizes the collectionof your food, toy and blood drives at our office buildings, and coordinatesdelivery to the appropriate agency.• When community projects like the Team Bike Challenge come up, CommunityConnection provides leadership to organize teams and employee participation.• COL also works with Gifts in Kind International to deliver product donations.

It’s pretty fantastic! In California, Santa Barbara is one of the highest-ranked counties in the

number of nonprofits per capita. And that’s just one of many communities thatCOL employees live and work in. We can do more.

You can get involved in all of the ways listed above and if you want to takeit one step further, you can join the Community Connection Task Force. TaskForce members lead Community Connection projects and review fundingproposals submitted by employees and outside organizations. The committeemeets four to six times per year during lunchtime and meetings often hostguest speakers from nonprofit groups.

Q&A with Boris AlvesSr. Integration Engineer

Q: How do you stay active in the SB community as well asthe broader community?A: I’m involved with Community Connection and have beenvolunteering to help with projects. We look at grants and evaluateproviding funds to non-profit organizations and projects likeHabitat for Humanity. I was involved with helping to motivatepeople to get involved in the I Madonnari street painting festival atthe Santa Barbara Mission. Q: What other projects have you worked on recently?A: About four months ago, two others from Citrix Online and Iwent to Vons Supermarket on Calle Real to collect food for theSanta Barbara Foodbank. Vons had pre-printed bags thathighlighted suggested donation items people could shop for. The food drive endedup with 2,400 lbs of food, 800 of which were collected through our efforts. Q: What are you working on currently?A: We recently organized a Citrix Online Food Collection which lasted for threeweeks, through November 12. We put green bins across the various COL buildingsto collect canned and non-perishable foods from Citrites. We placed a bag inemployees’ mailboxes which suggested what foods were best to donate. Q: What was the process of planning and executing a large-scale food drivelike this?A: Community Connection needed volunteers to put on the food drive and Ivolunteered. We contacted Jane Lindsey of the Foodbank who is the liaison betweencompanies and the organization. It’s really about interfacing the needs of theFoodbank and what COL can provide. Then Facilities places the bins across the COLcampus and distributes the bags – they really do a lot of the legwork to make ithappen. Once we collect the food, we need volunteers to create packages and makesure that the food is in a good, safe condition and not tampered with or damaged. Then we’ll put it into rations and send it off.Q: What do you hope to do in the long run with Community Connection andprograms like the food drive?A: It would be good to establish a team to work on special programs. CommunityConnection is a great venue to get to know others and provide help. Ideally, we coulduse a Volunteer Coordinator within Community Connection to help with thescheduling. What’s great about Community Connection and projects like the fooddrive is that it makes it easy to give. It’s very simple!

Monique Miller and friends lend helping handsfor the gradual rebuilding of Gentilly.

Monique Miller Returns toPost-Katrina New OrleansIn October, I had the pleasure of getting together withtwenty of my closest friends from college for a five-day reunion in New Orleans, where we attendedLoyola University more years ago than any of us care

to admit. In addition to a full social and gastronomic schedule, we had allagreed to devote one day of the trip to assisting the recovering residents. Uponseeing the destruction left by flood waters, which had flowed over the brokenlevies on that fateful day in August of 2005, I was simply broken-hearted. Evennow, two years later, recovery seems a daunting proposition.

After Katrina, residents of the flooded areas did not know where to turn forhelp. Communication was almost nonexistent for weeks, further hindering theresponse by government and humanitarian agencies. The Gentilly district ofNew Orleans was 80% flooded and its 40,000 residents were among themost-severely affected by the Katrina levy breaches. Out of the doom andgloom, however, rose local heroes that are demonstrating to their neighborsthat recovery, while hard, is absolutely possible. One such hero is Gentillyresident (and GoToMyPC customer), Scott Darrah.

Recognizing that his neighbors were accustomed to looking to each other intimes of need, Scott founded the Gentilly Civic Improvement Association (GCIA)and brought residents together to define their recovery plan. The association’searly successes have attracted an external recovery team of specialists, whichhave a proven track record of successful urban redevelopment of other areas inthe US that have experienced similar devastation. With more residentscommitted to rebuilding comes more schools and hospitals in the area, which, inturn convince more pre-Katrina residents to return.

My college friends and I spent our volunteer day making street signs forone neighborhood of the GCIA. Despite the residents’ gratitude, we could nothelp but feel that our efforts were trivial, given the enormity of theneighborhood’s needs. Once we learned more about their situation, we clearlyunderstood that we could help them the most by communicating their needs tothe rest of the country and providing information about how to safely makefinancial contributions, directly to those that need them. Our duty is to explainhow people can donate money, without fear of corruption or waste, which willfurther the projects of the GCIA and directly contribute to the recovery of itsstreets, schools, playgrounds and residences.

Start to Finish withThomas Moraitis,Communications Creative Manager

Q: Thomas, we normally don’t pry like this with ourinterviewees, but I know you want to tell us: whatare your stats?A: I’m 56, and my starting weight was 234 lbs. TodayI weigh 174 lbs and my target weight is 164 lbs. Thisyear, I achieved my big fitness goal which was tocomplete the Santa Barbara Triathlon last August.Q: What finally made you decide to begin a weightloss program? A: My daughter’s wedding and the triathlon.Comments like “you will feel better” and “you are atrisk for a heart attack” just didn't work for me. I haveonly one daughter and more than anything I wantedto make that special day as sweet as my love for her.I had an idea: lose some weight, record and sing

“Unforgettable” with her, and then play the recording for our father-daughterdance. It was, as I hoped, the most beautiful moment we ever shared. InSeptember 2006, I was sitting in a booth at the Santa Barbara Triathlon, where Citrix Online was a sponsor. I watched the crowd and said to myself,“Here are people my own age, fit and running a triathlon. What’s keeping mefrom doing this next year?”Q: What diet program are you following? A: The Hospital Diet, which is my own invention. We work next door to a hospitalcafeteria and they have food for lunch that you don't really want to overeat:soup, salad, meat and vegetables. My dietician, Lillian Salazar, a cafeteria chiefhas watched my transformation. I told her one day we’d be on Oprah! Mondaythrough Friday I have a breakfast bar from the Zone Diet (against my doctor’sadvice), but I have some meat and veggies or salad for lunch. I eat a normaldinner but leave food on my plate (against my mother’s advice).Q: How long have you been on your weight-loss program? A: For two years. The first year I lost 30 pounds for my daughter’s wedding. The second year I lost 30 pounds for the triathlon. Q: What were the most difficult obstacles? A: There were three: 1) being lazy – I would watch a sports activity andwonder where do they get the drive? How do they get the energy? 2) beingfat. It’s hard to run when you’re fat. So it helped to first lose some weightbefore going full steam into getting fit, – and 3) being comfortable. I wasn’thappy being fat, but it didn't hurt either. I had accepted being husky.

Q: What kinds of physical activities do you do?A: 1. Swimming. I swim at the UCSB pool four times a week at lunchtime.

2. Biking. after ten 24-mile trips to Ojai from my home in Ventura, it wastime to make the big purchase: a carbon frame road bike. I started biking with the Channel Islands Cycle Club. I would ask Neil, “Do you think I can do55 miles?” He would say, ”Yes Thomas, you can.” I surprised myself over and over again.

3. Running. This was the most difficult for me, but a few months ago I bought an iPod nano and Nike sensor system. This was a big help in getting my feet to move. I love to dance, so running to beats-per-minute music was a motivator to up the pace.

4. Walking. I enjoy walking on the beach and listening to the waves. I walk a half mile to the hospital for my lunch. I also enjoy walks with my wife.

Q: And how do you keep yourself motivated? A: I set new goals. After the Santa Barbara Triathlon, a friendat work asked if I was going to do the Carpinteria Triathlon. Ithought about it and said yes. I am keeping up the workouts.Getting compliments has been encouraging, and I‘ve boughtsome new clothes. I went from a 44 waist to a 33. I wore alot of loose camp shirts to cover the fat. Now I enjoy wearinga belt and tucking my shirt in. When I run and see mysilhouette, I can’t believe it's me. I finished a 100-mile bikefor MS in October. At work I manage our CommunityConnection program, and instead of just sponsoring athleticevents, I want to participate in them. I went to the doctor toget some questions answered over a year ago. If I lost weightand got fit, I could be weaned off my high blood pressuremedications. Recently, he reduced my meds. There’s stillmore to lose, so I’m not there yet.Q: Do you have any weight-loss tips for our readers? A: 1. Find your motivation – look at the road ahead. Is there a wedding, a

high school reunion, a triathlon, a marathon or something BIG that can help motivate you?

2. Get help – at the start you’ll want to learn the right way to do activities. 3. Make a few good choices each day – get used to splitting a meal when

you go out. Order soup. Eat slowly. Leave food on your plate. Don’t eat all the bread. Enjoy a burger without the bun.

4. Enjoy chocolate once in a while, but not every day – I did something great for myself this year. Is it time for you to take that first step? All those who know you and love you want the best for you and will support you. Amaze them with your progress. Amaze them so they can in turn amaze others. Amaze YOURSELF!

Citrix fills Empty Bowls COL helped fill “Empty Bowls” at the 10th annual benefit luncheon held at theSanta Barbara Woman’s Club-Rockwood supporting the Foodbank of Santa Barbara.Raising funds for the Foodbank is integral in their mission to collect and distributenutritious foods to over 100,000 people from Carpinteria to Santa Maria.

Empty Bowls generated over 500 supporters who donated $25 or more tochoose a handmade ceramic bowl to fill with donated soup and bread.

Citrix Online donated $2,500 to the cause and was recognized in the event’spromotional posters and printed material as a corporate sponsor. “It’s reallywonderful to be part of a company that supports important community endeavorslike Empty Bowls,” said Citrite Elizabeth Cholawsky who, along with Bernardo deAlbergaria, gave their time to serve food at the event. Bernardo said, “it remindedme of my college days as a waiter, nothing beats a thankful smile when servinggreat food! It’s great to see the difference we can make in our own community.”

Proceeds of Sale Benefits Local CharityAfter witnessing the ‘Bulletin Phenomenon’ characterized by the ability of anyitem, however practical or obscure, to find an immediate new COL owner, theFacilities team coordinated a moving sale for a major pre-move downsize.

With little storage in the new building; patio furniture, chairs, and much more weresold on October 23rd at the PTC Patio to facilitate the upcoming move. It was a zooout there with about 150 employees scrambling to buy a hot bargain.

Instead of listing a price, shoppers were asked to give a donation whichwent to the Teddy Bear Foundation. Over $900 was raised for this local charitywhich provides financial support for the families of children who have cancer.

COL EmployeesGet on the BallIf you see a bouncing head in the cubenext door, don’t be alarmed. It’s not a left over Halloween decoration but rather a

product of the latest ergonomic craze. At the recent EasternErgonomic Conference in New York, a facilities director from Googlementioned that they had begun using “ball chairs” for their noveltyas well ergonomic benefits. A physical therapist reiterated thebenefits of the chairs by explaining that the balls force you to sitproperly, utilizing core muscles and balance through “active sitting.”

Morgan Pinney brought this idea back to consider the role ofthese balls in preventing back and neck problems among Citrites.“We want to be the type of company leading the pack on how weprovide for our employees.”

So far, about 50 ball chairs have been delivered, with Financebeing the first department to catch the craze. There are the two types of ball chairs:the large green balls and the smaller purple balls on a stand with a backrest foradditional support and stability. There have been no reports of Citrites flying off theirball chairs or incidents of death by large rubber ball, so no need to worry. As Morgansays, “You pretty much have to lose your senses to fall off.” If you’re interested inmaking the switch, submit a ticket to Facilities.

The Science of Successby Charles G. KochWhen Charles Koch writes a book on how to manage, we should listen.Charles Koch is the CEO of Koch Industries, the largest privately-held companyin the world. He led the company from revenues of about $40 million in 1961to $90 billion in 2006, a 2100-fold increase. In The Science of Success, Kochgives us the 30,000 view of how he runs Koch Industries.

Koch is an MIT trained engineer who experimented with and infusedeconomic principles into the policies of Koch Industries. He looked at societiesfor guidance, finding that property rights motivate people to obtain, protect anddevelop resources; that incentives tied directly to societal goals (of course)encourage people to improve their society; and that, in a competitive market, the highest-cost producer who reduces production when it is unprofitabledictates product pricing.

Koch brought capitalist economics to corporate management, with somevariations. For example, in Koch Industries, compensation is tied tocontribution—did your actions bring the company higher long-term value? Ifso, you are rewarded with spot bonuses and “decision rights” in relation toyour accomplishments. “Decision rights” are a corporate substitute for society’s“property rights”. Encoded in an employee’s “roles, responsibilities andexpectations,” decision rights normally come with a management role, butKoch Industries grants decision rights to employees who draft and executeeconomically successful proposals and who demonstrate the urgency, discipline and sense of accountability needed to make good future decisions. You don’t have to manage people to gain authority.

Most companies approximate economic principles in their policies, but fewmake broad economic principles explicit in their mission and drill them intoevery employee. There are many management ideas discussed in this too-briefbook. I found myself wanting more at the end: wanting to know the details ofKoch’s incentive program, wanting examples of how people gained decisionrights and what they did with those rights, wanting to see how these principlescould be applied in my own efforts. I want more from Koch. In this case,“wanting more” is an endorsement.

Pack it Up!If you haven’t moved yet, you will soon! Here are a few tips for getting amove on.

1. Plan aheadWith a million other things to occupy your thoughts, it’s easy to put alooming office move on the backburner. But being prepared will save youthe stress of last-minute sorting through your piles of ancient files whichhave taken on a life of their own through the years…or weeks. And let’sbe serious, nobody needs stacks upon stacks of old documents secondonly to the National Archives of D.C. Time to shred those three year-oldemail print outs. Start organizing now and condense the materials you willbe boxing up for the move – it will make the task of unloading andorganizing much less daunting.

2. Mark your territoryAlthough your little brother may have utilized this technique on hisHalloween candy when you were kids, simply licking your possessions isnot enough to claim ownership and ensure the protection of your personalbelongings. Make sure you put moving labels on everything. With so manyboxes floating around each department, it’s easy to confuse the big brownbox containing your important records with your coworker’s big brown boxcontaining Billy Joel records.

3. Know what to pack whereCondense smaller and light objects into largerboxes, while saving the heavy items forsmaller boxes. Make sure to use plenty ofbubble wrap or newspapers to protect yourfragile belongings in boxes. Give specialattention to plants and personal items and, when in doubt, move them yourself.

4. Clean up and clear outDon’t leave your office like you left yourcollege dorm upon departure – clean up alittle before heading out! Here’s to moremoving adventures ahead!
