INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK God’s fidelity is at the heart of Scripture. Trusting in God’s all-encompassing and abiding presence is what true faith is really all about. The sincere disciples always have their eyes on Jesus Christ and are not distracted by what others are doing or what is happening around them. We know that the world had a beginning, and we know that it will one day end. Trying to predict when that end will come or becoming too preoccupied with the business of others are futile endeavors. All they do is divert us from our main purpose and goal: to live and act in the person of Christ. Being a faithful son or daughter and witness to God’s faithfulness is all that is required and all that we need. If we do this well, it does not matter whether the world as we know it comes to an end tomorrow or at some unforeseen time in the future. We will be ready and properly prepared.

A ROSE was placed near the Holy Family by Holy Redeemer’s Bereavement Committee in memory of John Steineman. Please remember John and his family in your prayers.

Religious Education

Last week during Third Grade CCD class my class sang the songs they were singing for the Veteran’s Day Program. They were fantastic and I was very impressed. They all sang their hearts out, even the boys, and that is unusual.

We are planning on starting two, one for children and one for adults, outreach singing groups. Our plans are to sing at nursing homes, possibly hospitals, and other locations. During the Ministry fair last weekend at church, we did get several people to sign up, but we are still in need of many more. If you have any desire to serve and entertain others, please let me know. Parents, there is nothing more precious than the sound of children singing, so please consider signing them up. You can call either church 419-629-2543 or Kathy at 419-953-6420 to sign up.

This past Wednesday our 10th and 11th grade religious classes visited residents in Elmwood. We pray that by helping our newly confirmed students focus on living out what they have learned, they may discover a bigger God-given purpose in their life. The students were asked to listen to the residents’ stories and then asked residents if they had 3 wishes, what would they be. It is our hope that we can somehow translate these wishes into a special Christmas gift, as we plan on a return visit in December. I believe some of the students were caught off guard by what the residents wished for. The wishes included books to read, candy, Buckeyes to go undefeated, to go home, chocolate cake, get health back, the sound of music, and my favorite…"for you boys to stay for another half hour”. In this time of year when the days grow shorter, and we see less of the sun how fitting it is to be a mirror reflecting God’s radiant light.

A: We hear the phrase “the end of the world” casually today. Often in film or media, it means the end of civil society or the threat of human annihilation by natural disasters. For the Christian, our perspective is distinctly Christ-centered. Numerous times through the Gospel, Jesus notes that he will come again, even after he has ascended into heaven. The Church typically refers to this as the Second Coming of Jesus or the Latin “Parousia,” meaning “presence” or “arrival.” We believe that Christ will come again, and at his Second Coming, temporal time will end. Human history will end, at least as we know it. However, it doesn’t mean that creation will be destroyed. The book of Revelation speaks of a renewal, indeed a “new heaven and a new earth” (Rev 21:1). Christ will come again in glory. Our souls will be reunited with our bodies. While our lives were judged individually at our deaths, which we call the particular judgment, something new will happen here. Theologians call it the general judgment or the last judgment, in which our deeds and the effects — for good or ill — will be known to all. For the early Christians, this second coming was hoped for! They knew it was the completion of God’s work of redemption for the human race. We, too, should pray with them, “Come Lord Jesus!”

Where would you go if the world was ending? What would you do? The last decade has seen a rise in doomsday prepping, the marketing of survival techniques, and a sea of products designed for you to weather the apocalypse. “The days will come when there will not be left a stone upon another that will not be thrown down,” Jesus warns in today’s Gospel. On the one hand, he is referring to the literal downfall of the city of Jerusalem. Indeed, many of his prophecies here have come true over the last few millennium. Nations have indeed “rise[n] against nation[s],” kingdoms against kingdoms. Surf any world news website today alone, and you will see stories of “powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues.” Jesus’ advice to his disciples, however, isn’t to build a bunker. It’s to persevere in faith … which won’t be easy. “They will seize and persecute you … you will be handed over … you will be hated because of my name.” This warning, too, has come to pass in the Church throughout history in state-sponsored persecutions and martyrdoms. Jesus is the Messiah, but his first coming was not a coming of earthly victory. Any disciple of his can expect a challenge. The coming of Christ didn’t disrupt our free will. Evil still exists and sometimes even appears to triumph. This does not mean God has abandoned His people! Jesus reminds the disciples - and us - of his constant presence. “I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking.” In other Gospel passages, Jesus promises and sends the Holy Spirit upon his followers. The presence of God is real in our lives, no matter what trials come our way. It’s tempting to be distracted or dismayed by natural destruction and moral evil in the world. But the Church has weathered greater storms. The sacredness of the human person endures. We can have hope! This day and every day, we can persevere in hope and trust in God.

GOSPEL MEDITATION

This Week: November 17 – Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading – Malachi 3:19-20a:

But for you who fear my name, there will arise the sun of justice with its healing

rays. (Mal 3:20a)

These closing remarks from the book of the prophet Malachi speak of the

approaching end-times and God’s judgment upon the world. Malachi teaches us that

those who “fear” God’s name will be saved. How do you show your fear of the

Lord?

Second Reading – 2 Thessalonians 3:7-12:

In fact, when we were with you, we instructed you that if anyone was unwilling to

work, neither should that one eat. (2 Thes 3:10)

Paul presents himself, Silvanus, and Timothy as “models” of the faith for the

Thessalonians. Who from your faith community do you regard as a model to

emulate?

Gospel – Luke 21:5-19:

“You will be hated by all because of my name, but not a hair on your head will be

destroyed.” (Lk 21:17-18)

Jesus speaks about the end-times in today’s Gospel: the destruction of the Temple,

false messiahs, and coming persecution. Jesus emphasizes the importance of

perseverance. What do you see as key to persevering in the faith?

Next Week: November 24 –Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

First Reading – 2 Samuel 5:1-3:

“You shall shepherd my people Israel and shall be commander over Israel.” (1 Sm

5:2b) Today’s reading records how God orchestrated David’s anointing as king of Israel,

a central figure in Jesus’ ancestry. What does this teach us about God’s divine

providence?

Second Reading – Colossians 1:12-20:

He delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his

beloved Son. (Col 1:13)

In today’s reading from Colossians, Paul preserves for us one of the earliest

Christological hymns (Col 1:15-20). How do you see this hymn affirming Jesus’

identity as our Lord and King?

Gospel – Luke 23:35-43:

[Jesus] replied to him, “Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” (Lk 23:43) For Luke, those who mocked Jesus on the cross failed to see how his suffering and

death were central to his identity as Lord and King of the Universe. Why do you

think this remains a mystery to so many?

November 21 we celebrate the

memorial of the Presentation of the

Blessed Virgin Mary.

Church tradition holds that at a young

age, Mary was presented to the Lord in

the temple by her parents Joachim and

Anna. It was there, in the temple, that

Mary was dedicated to the Lord and

made her vow of chastity. She lived and

grew up in the temple until she was

betrothed to Joseph.

What does the Feast of the Presentation

mean for the Church? What does it mean

to us?

We all are presented to the Lord in

Baptism. Mary entered the temple with

her parents and was offered to the Lord.

We are not only offered to the Lord at

Baptism, we become the temple of the

living God through Baptism.

Mary shows us what it means to be a

temple of the Lord through her

pregnancy. Just as, literally, Jesus was

within her, so, literally, the Holy Trinity

is in us through Baptism. Do you respect

yourself and others as temples of the

living God?

As Mary was conceived without any

stain of sin, and she remained so all of

her life, we, ourselves, are cleansed of all

sin at Baptism, but we fall and sin. Do

not be discouraged, though. Mary bears

the title "the Refuge of Sinners." In your

weakness, in your failings, go to your

Mother.
