By Our Staff Reporter LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N) stalwart Talal Chaudhry re- sponded to State Minister for Narcotics Control Shehryar Afridi’s presser on Wednesday afternoon over Rana Sanaullah’s legal proceedings, and stated that the minister has taken a u-turn by saying that he had “spo- ken of a footage and not a video”. “Shehryar Afridi has become a ‘u-turn Niazi’ […] he should apologise to the nation as neither evidence nor video is available [to him],” the PML-N leader said, while asking Mr Afridi to resign for speaking a lie. “The nation has seen that Rana Sanaullah was kept imprisoned for seven months on the basis of a lie,” he said, adding that he could see no sign of humiliation, shame and regret on the face of the minister, instead continued arrogance. “The nation was waiting for Shehryar Afridi to present the video to today." PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Au- rangzeb has also demanded resignation from whosoever had leveled false allegations against Rana Sanaullah, who is also a Mem- ber of the National Assembly (MNA). Talking to media at a ceremony held in connection with the birth anniversary of Quad-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif’s, Christmas Day, she said that Prime Minister Imran Khan has been “kidnapping his political op- ponents.” “The selected government is about to be toppled,” she said and added those swearing allegations against Rana Sanaullah should re- sign.” The PML-N spokesperson said that the prime minister couldn’t become a capable person by putting opponents behind the bars, adding that false allegations were leveled against the PML-N leaders, but courts granted bails to them. Marriyum Aurangzeb said Quaid-e-Azam had laid the foundation of the supremacy of the constitution and law and two-nation the- ory and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif had tried to run the country as per principles of the Founder of the Nation. “The former prime minister made the country an atomic power and laid the network of motorways and brought the country out of darkness and gave the gift of CPEC which has been closed down today,” she said. Speaking on the occasion, former national assembly speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said that instead of contacting the opposition over Army Chief’s tenure extension, the govern- ment has started targeting the opposition. The ceremony was attended by Marriyum Aurangzeb, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Pervzaiz Malik, Imran Nazir, Shaista Pervaiz and other party workers. Meanwhile, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) parliamentary leader Hasan Murtaza said that the life has to be given to the Almighty, but evidence has to be presented before the court. 'Footage' not a requirement in Rana Sanaullah's case: ANF Anti-Narcotics Force’s (ANF) Special Prosecutor Raja Inam – following bail granted to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Rana Sanaullah in a nar- cotics case yesterday – asserted on Wednes- day that provision of “footage” was not the requirement in the legal proceedings in the case and all evidence was submitted to the court. He further mentioned that all statements relevant to the recovery of the heroin from the vehicle of Sanaullah were also submitted in the court. “Statements of three witnesses were also submitted in the court […] we had filed an application for hearing the case on daily basis,” he added. ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has rejected the US State Department's unilateral and arbi- trary designation under the religious freedom report announced on 20 December 2019. The US Department of State on Dec. 18 re- designated Pakistan and several other coun- tries as “Countries of Particular Concern for having engaged in or tolerated “systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of reli- gious freedom.” “This pronouncement is not only detached from ground realities of Pakistan but also raises questions about the credibility and transparency of the entire exercise. The des- ignation is reflective of selective targeting of countries, and thus unlikely to be helpful to the professed cause of advancing religious freedom,” the Foreign Office said late Tues- day. A statement said Pakistan is a multi-reli- gious and pluralistic country where people of all faiths enjoy religious freedom under constitutional protections and all branches - - the Executive, Legislature and the Judici- ary -- have made concerted efforts to ensure that all citizens of Pakistan, irrespective of faith, denomination, caste or creed, can pro- fess and practice their religion in full free- dom. “The higher judiciary of the country has given landmark judgments directing on en- suring the sanctity and security of places of worship of minorities,” the statement said. It said Pakistan has also engaged with the international community, including the United States, for better understanding on re- ligious freedom issues. Earlier this year, Senator Samuel Brown- back, the US Ambassador-at-Large for Inter- national Religious reedom, was welcomed in Pakistan for dialogue to advance the mutual objectives of religious freedom globally. It is regrettable that this constructive engagement has been overlooked. “The subjectivity and bias of the State De- partment’s designations are further illustrated by the conspicuous omission of India, the biggest violator of religious freedom,” the statement said. It pointed out that the US Congress has held two hearings and more than 70 US leg- islators have publicly expressed concerns over India’s treatment of Kashmiris and pro- longed suppression of their fundamental rights in the Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOJ&K). The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva, the UN Secretary General in New York, and several European Parlia- ments have similarly expressed their con- cerns. In today’s India, people belonging to minority communities are being lynched, per- secuted and killed with impunity. The National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the recently adopted Citizenship Amend- ment Act (CAA) are the latest examples of the Indian government's actions to discrimi- nate against people and evidently pave the way towards cleansing of society on the basis of religion. The statement said challenges to religious freedom are a global concern and only coop- erative efforts can help address them. “For its part, Pakistan has also raised con- cerns over growing trend of Islamophobia in many Western countries including the United States. Working together in an envi- ronment of trust and understanding is the best way forward in realising the objective of promoting and protecting religious free- dom.” —DNA NAB recovers Rs 153b in last 27 months: Chairman ISLAMABAD: The National Ac- countability Bureau (NAB) has arrested 630 accused, filed 600 references, de- posited Rs 153 billion in the national ex- chequer in the last 27 months, said Chairman Justice (Retd) Javed Iqbal on Wednesday. In a statement, he said the overall ratio of conviction of NAB was 70 percent in the accountability courts, which was high- est as comparing to any other such anti graft institution.Right now,1,261 refer- ences, having accumulated value of Rs 943 billion, were in 25 different account- ability courts. NAB has no affiliation with any political party, group or individual but has affiliations with the state of Pak- istan and NAB officers were performing their national duty of eradication of cor- ruption with dedication. Justice Javed said the anti graft watch- dog was making vigorous attempts to eradicate the menace of corruption by pur- suing its policy of ‘Accountability for All’. NAB has already set its goal of tak- ing the cases of the corrupt, proclaimed of- fenders to logical conclusion as per law and ensure the return of looted money of the nation from them. The performance of the bureau has already been acknowledged by prestigious national and international institutions including Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development and Trans- parency (PILDAT), Mashal Pakistan, Transparency International and World Economic Forum, he said adding accord- ing to Gillani and Gallup International 59 percent people of Pakistan expressed con- fidence over NAB, which has encouraged the bureau’s officers as they have redou- bled their efforts for eradication of cor- ruption from the country. —APP PM to lay stone of Jalalpur canal today ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan will lay foundation stone of Jalapur-Kundwal canal project today (Thursday). Its passing on Dec. 11 triggered demonstrations in the east- ern state of Assam, where protesters fear it will make illegal migrants from Bangladesh legal residents. Elsewhere, critics say the law discriminates against Mus- lims and is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist agenda. The government denies that.
