DEVELOPMENT OF NURSING
EDUCATION IN INDIAThe Auxiliary Nurse Midwife Programme:
The 1st course was started at St.Marys Hospital Taran taran,
Punjab in 1951.
The entrance qualification was raised from 7th to matriculation.
UNIVERSITY LEVEL PROGRAMMES:
Basic B.Sc Nursing:
The need of nursing at university level was felt in 1940 by TNAI
members.B.Sc Nursing was started in July 1946 in School of Hospital
Administration later known as College of Nursing then called
Rajkumari Amrit Kaur College of Nursing, New Delhi in 1972.
Started in CMC Vellore,in1946

Post-Basic/ Post-Certificate B.Sc Nursing:
Training for certificate nurses was stressed by
Mudaliar Committee in 1962.
2 yr degree program was started in Dec.1962 by
School of Nursing, University of Thiruvananthpuram.
Post-Graduate Education:
M.Sc Nursing:
2 yr Degree course was started at RAK College of
Nursing, New Delhi in 1959. Started at CMC Vellore in 1969.
M.Sc Nursing in Psychiatry was started in Sept.1983
at NIMHANS, Bangalore.

M.Phil Programme:
Suggested to RAK College principal by INCinspection committee on Sept.13,1977.
Started on Oct.15,1986
1 yr for regular and 2 yr for part time candidates.
Ph.D Programme:
Started from 1990 at PGI Chandigarh, CMC Vellore,
RAK New Delhi etc.
At NIMHANS, Bangalore for their own faculty.

Nursing program must meet the criteria
established by National League For Nursing
Accrediting.

RN candidates must pass National CouncilLicensure Examination For RegisteredNurses in U.S.
CERTIFICATION: National Nursing Organizations e.g. ANA
provide many type of certificates.
Validation can be continued by ongoingcontinuing education & clinical oradministrative practice.

MASTERS DEGREE PREPARATION:
After completing graduation in nursing one
can receive Master in Nursing or Master of
Science in Nursing.
M.Sc Nurse can work as Nurse Educator,
Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse
Administrator or Nurse Practitioner.

Started in 1953 at University of Pittsburgh.
Emphasize on basic Research and Theory.
CONTINUING AND IN-SERVICEEDUCATION:
Continuing education involves formal,
organized and educational programs. Help Nurses become specialized in
particular area.
