The fundamental principle of scientific pedagogy must be, indeed, the
liberty of the pupil;such liberty as shall permit a development of
individual, spontaneous manifestations of the childs nature. If a newand scientific pedagogy is to arise from the study of the individual, such
study must occupy itself with the observation of free children.

Ideas Central to the Montessori Method
y Areas of the Classroom.y The Montessori classroom is set-
up into eight different areas:practical life, sensorial, math, language, culture/geography,science, and art.
y Mainstays are practical life, sensorial, math, and language.Montessori stressed the
importance of learning throughthe senses (sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell) andincorporated them into thematerials.

y Prepared Environment.y The goal is to have a place where
the child would maximize andfacilitate independent learning.
y It is a calm, well-ordered spacewhere the child is able to carryout tasks suited to their varyingneeds and abilities.
y
Elements of a preparedenvironment include: freedom, structure, order, beauty, nature, social, and intellectual.

y Age Range.
y In Montessori classrooms youll find
that children are grouped by a 3-
year age range (3-6, 6-9, 9-12, etc).
y The benefit of this is so that the
older children can model and lead
the younger ones and the younger
children are propelled on in their
own learning by observing what the
older children are doing.

y Respect.
y Montessori believed thatchildren should be treatedwith respect, as capable
beingsnot just little adults.
y Respect is incorporated intoevery aspect of the Montessorienvironment. The children are
taught and then expected torespect their environment, thematerials, world, themselves, and others.

y Order.y Order plays an important
aspect of a Montessorienvironment, because it allowsthe children to focus during
times when they areexperiencing rapid growth anddevelopment.
y The ordered environmentallows the child to focus on
their work and task they areinterested, which in turnenables the child to absorb theexperience and learn quickly.

y Rewards & Punishments.
y Montessoris called external rewardsand punishments the bench of thesoul, the instrument of slavery for the
spirit (The Montessori Method, 21), butthat the process and discovery in thework itself would be reward enough.
y An occasional external reward might
be a smile from a teacher or a quietacknowledgment of an appropriatebehavior.

y The MontessoriTeacher.
y The role of a Montessori teacher,
also referred to as a directoress, is
to inspire, demonstrate, and
facilitate, but not to lecture.
y She (or he) does this by maintaining
a prepared environment, providing
the opportunity for formal and
informal learning, and modelingthe behavior the teacher desires to
see in the child.

y Presentations.
y The elements of a formal presentation include that the teacher
believes the child is ready for the new activity, the activity is
presented and treated as the childs work instead of play, the
caregiver presents the activity in sequence, and finally the childperforms the activity as many times as he/she likes.
