12 CRITICAL ISSUES YOU MUST UNDERSTAND ABOUT HIGH PERFORMANCE COATINGS

by Creative Material Technologies, Ltd.

“Solving Today’s Problems with Tomorrow’s Technologies”

1 All Hybrid Coatings are Not Equal

One product is a 99% polyurea/1% polyurethane hybrid mix and another product is a 1% polyurea/99% polyurethane hybrid mix, but both products are labeled the same, “Polyurea Hybrid”. Be informed!

2 Open Time / Working Time The shorter the open time, the faster the

coating gels and is less able to flow. Of course, everyone wants a fast cure

product, but if it gels too fast to conform to the surface profile (wetting out), you risk catastrophic adhesion failure.

3 The “No VOC’s” Claim

Zero VOC’S does not mean “No Solvents”. True 100% solids coating systems, while being more expensive per gallon, have a low enough viscosity

to be sprayed without the use of any solvent. 4 Know What You Are Paying For

All solids are not created equal. Some manufacturers add fillers, additives, and other non-resin components to increase their own profit, that reduce the products cost and performance properties. Resins build physical properties, while fillers typically only build volume.

5 Solvents vs. No Solvents

Coatings containing solvents or water are inherently more porous than 100% solids coatings systems.

It has been said that “you get what you pay for.” However, with solvent / water based coatings systems, you actually get a lot less than you paid for!

6 The “Thicker Is Better” Tale Thickness alone does not determine performance. Quality of raw materials, formulation excellence, and

application equipment all need to be considered before comparing different coatings. A high performance coating that uses quality raw materials will not need the same thickness to match or

exceed the performance of a cheap, filler-laden coating.

7 Technical Support Direct access to the technical personnel that control and understand the product formulation is critical to

providing quality technical support. We are the direct source. CHAIN MAIL OR CHAIN LINK FENCE

8 Crosslink Density Coatings with NO solvents of any kind by design

have the capacity of exhibiting the highest crosslink density, but will vary by formula.

9 Where’s That Certificate of Analysis? The Certificate of Analysis is your frontline defense in assuring that you are actually receiving what you

think you ordered. AROMATIC ALIPHATIC

Grey to Green tint in under Still Grey after 6.5 6 months of exposure * years exposure*

10 All Aliphatics are Not Equal

Some products are 51% aliphatic and 49% aromatic are still labeled as an aliphatic product. Only 100% aliphatic is truly aliphatic. Be informed!

Equivalent exposure results through the use of QUV accelerated weathering equipment.

11 Safety Issues The factors that affect safety include not only chemistry and free monomer, but also particle size and

mist.

12 Product Development High performance coatings should be purchased based upon the application’s requirements… not sold

by a salesperson that just wants to make their commission or has nothing else to offer. A company with no product development forces the customer into an inappropriate “one size fits all” solution.

Look for a supplier that is willing to listen and spend time understanding your real needs, and if appropriate, develop a custom solution where no solution currently exists. When you find a company that can and will do this, you have found a "business partner"
