The Dirty Dozen10
Tried before judge and jury
The lawyers and attorneys try the case. The judge hears and assesses the case. “If there's a reasonable doubt in your minds as to
the guilt of the accused, a reasonable doubt, then you must bring me a verdict of not guilty. If however, there is no reasonable doubt, then you must in good conscience find the accused guilty. However you decide, your verdict must be unanimous,”
An open and shut case (?)
Hispanic boy from a slum Violent and criminal history On trial for stabbing his father to death Two ‘witnesses’ A murder weapon – switchblade knife A questionable alibi
“I don’t know” – “Suppose…”
Inside the jury room
The judge: "one man is dead" and "another man's life is at stake."
First vote 11-1 Juror 8: “We can't decide in five minutes. Supposin'
we're wrong?"
The power of words
Juror 12 suggests that the other jurors
should attempt to "convince" Juror 8 of the defendant‘s guilt
- "that he's wrong and we're right."
Going around the table, each of the
jurors is given a minute or two.
"You couldn't change my mind if you talked for a hundred years."
Yakety-yakAnd other unusual phrasess
“What difference does it make how many seconds it took before the old man heard the screams - nobody can be that accurate.”“Well, I think testimony that could put a boy into the electric chair should be that accurate.”
“How many times have you said ‘I’m gonna kill you?’.”
Language differentiatesThe great American melting pot
Juror 10: He's a common ignorant slob. He don't even speak good English!Juror 11: He doesn't even speak good English
Juror 10: Why are you being so polite?Juror 11: For the same reason you are not – it’s the way I was brought up
It explodes like 12 sticks of dynamite
A reasonabledoubt
Still to come in November
