The following first ap-peared in the September 21, 1897 edition of The New York Sun. It was in response to a question mailed to The Sun by eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon. She wrote, “Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, ‘If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.’ Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?” The letter was given to veteran editorial writer Francis P. Church, who wrote the following response.

Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except what they see. They think that noth-

I am so glad to report that my great grand-daughter, Delaney Rho-den, has been able to re-turn home and is hoping to go back to school for a few hours before the Christmas break.

Sheldon friends were happy to hear that Betty Houdeshell is now home following several days in Freeman Hospital for surgery.

The food pantry re-turned December 18, for the residents of Sheldon and Bronaugh. It was held at the community building in the park at Sheldon.

The Sheldon R8 music program was held De-cember 18, at the school. The class that collected the most canned food items were recognized, along with the winner of the lighting contest.

Sheldon students were dismissed at 12:30 p.m. on December 19 and will remain on break until

January 5, 2015.The Sheldon Chris-

tian Church Christmas program was held Sun-day morning, Dec. 21. A candlelight ceremony will be at 7 p.m. on December 24.

The United Methodist Church held their Christ-mas program on Decem-ber 7 and their Christmas dinner was December 17.

Several trees have been planted in the park and the project should be completed soon, with the additional trees being planted.

Congratulations to the Lamar Tigers on their fourth state football championship. Fam-ily and friends are very proud of the players and coaches.

While in Joplin Tues-day, it was wonderful to see gas prices below the two dollar mark.

We were thankful to hear that a gentlemen found east of town in a remote area by Michael Rayburn is in the hospital and doing better.

Tuesday evening the Sheldon Panthers hosted

the Bronaugh Wildcats. A good crowd was on hand, as the Sheldon boys and the Bronaugh girls won the games.

Everyone is busy get-ting ready for Christ-mas. If you have items or news that you would like to have included in the items, please contact Darlene Sheridan at 884-2445.

Maxine's Musings

By MAXINE MORIN

Hi everyone, it's Donna again.

Last Sunday, Dec. 14, was the VFW Post 3691 and Auxiliaries Voice of Democracy and Patriot's Pen Christmas dinner. It was held in the Memo-rial Hall basement, with a large crowd. Winners of the VOD were first place Hunter Vos, second place Reed Leasure and third place Keegan Duncan. Pa-triot's Pen winners were first Faith White, second Lauren Compton and third Travis Bailey.

Thursday, Dec. 11, mom and I attended Red Hats at Tractor's. We played Bingo and everyone won a red hat prize.

Last night, Jamey and I attended the Oakton Unit-

ed Methodist Church's outdoor living nativ-ity pageant. This was the 57th year for the pageant. Thank you Oakton UMC for all your hard work continuing this moving event. If you have not seen this pageant, be sure to mark your calendar for 2015. You'll be glad you did.

I was looking up a sweet potato recipe on my cell phone when the stupid thing quit. I bought a bet-ter phone in September when my other one died. My son said I needed one where I could use the in-ternet. What! I don't even know how to take a pic-ture with it. I was having a lot of fun with google. That's only because all you have to do with google is talk into the phone. That I can handle. Now I have a dead phone after only four months. I was smart enough to take out insur-ance, but I still have to call the company and deal with them. I hate dealing with insurance compa-nies. Wish me luck.

We will be spending Christmas at my brother, Max Orahood's home. I wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year. Re-member those who might be alone this holiday sea-son.

We wish all our military troops a Merry Christmas and God bless you!

FRIENDS & FAMILYShiloh 4-H GearChangers compete in robotics

In the small town of Liberal, big things are happening. When asked what they are up to these days most fifth grade boy would respond some-thing like, “basketball” or “Oh, not much,” but for seven boys in the Shi-loh 4-H chapter you may get a response that might surprise you.

Since late August the GearChangers have been building, programming, problem solving and hav-ing a great time prepar-ing and competing in the 2014-15 FLL (*FIRST Lego League). The team had only eight short weeks to prepare for their first competition, which consisted of four different areas, robot design, ro-bot competition, a proj-

ect idea and core values (teamwork).

When the playing field was released the boys had to tackle the task of designing a robot to go through the field com-pleting specific tasks. The robot had to be able to go forward, and backward, have turning abilities, have attachments to pull levers, push down han-dles, through a ball and pick up items off the play-ing field and place it on a hook and much more. The robot consisted of touch and color sensors, three motors and many attachments.

The robot had to be programmed to perform tasks autonomously. The boys used a computer to program the robot

to complete tasks at the push of a button. In two and a half minutes the robot had to complete 15 plus tasks specific to the guidelines of the compe-tition.

Another area of compe-tition was the project idea. The team had to develop a solution to a real world problem. They researched how to develop, market and manage an app that would aid in transporta-tion for schools. This idea has been entered in the world competition, along with 25,000 other teams/ideas. The winning team receives $20,000, product development possibilities and a EV3 robot for each team member. Three fi-nalists will be announced in February and the win-

ning idea will be released in Washington DC in March 2015.

In any area of the com-petition the boys are ex-pected to have positive, equal teamwork and have fun. They would meet after school three nights a week, sometimes as a whole, but mostly in small groups of two to three. At competition, the judges looked for these core val-ue traits when tasks were being performed.

On November 22, the GearChangers competed in the Kansas City Region qualifying tournament. In the robot competition they finished 20th out of 34 teams. Of the 34 teams that competed, only 12 received awards. The GearChangers received the Innovative Solution award for developing the transportation app. Al-though the GearChang-ers received an award and performed well above ex-pectations for their first competition, they did not qualify for the champion-ship. However, their sea-son is not over.

The team will be com-peting in the Mid-Mis-souri region tournament at the University of Mis-souri on January 31, 2015. They will also continue robotics for the 2014-15 4-H season. Anyone that would like to see the robot in action should watch for the Shiloh 4-H robotics group at the 4-H demonstration booth at the Lamar Fair in August.

Shiloh 4-H GearChangers are, back row, left to right, Treyton Bright, Noah Endicott, AJ Banwart, Team Coach Sara Trout; front row, Caleb Moreno, Kaden Johnson, Jon Beaman and Connor Trout.

said that was not good enough. The bid policy should be in writing in ordinance form even if it is exactly the same as state guidelines.

The second recommen-dation pertained to a cash management policy. In the past, the city’s general fund has had a negative balance at times due to expenses incurred by the police and fire depart-ments. Decker recom-mended journal entries be made to transfer a per-centage of sales from the electric fund to the gener-al fund, thereby eliminat-ing the negative balances. He described this book-keeping procedure as a “fee in lieu of tax,” and it would not translate into any increase in customers’ electric bills.

It is expected that the mayor, council, and ad-ministration will meet in a work session in the near future to determine how and what parts of the rec-ommendations to imple-ment.

The automatic reading of electric meters was a topic for lengthy discus-sion for the second suc-cessive meeting. It was revealed that numerous meters were under re-porting the amount of electricity used during discussion at November’s council meeting. At the December 15 meeting, it was confirmed that the monthly loss of rev-enue was approximately $10,000. This would be

eliminated by replacing the present system, which reports consumption fig-ures over wire commu-nications, with a wireless system that would be in-stalled in two phases. Fin-ley Engineering estimates the total cost, including meters, network infra-structure, network tools, and hosting fees from the vendor, would come to approximately $388,500. Finley further estimates that the city could com-mence capital recovery from installing phases one and two with a sur-charge on each meter in the city of $3.07 monthly. This surcharge would be on each meter, not just a residence. It would also be a flat rate regardless of residential or commercial meters.

Looking ahead, the new system could be expanded to phase 3, which would

include water meters. Representatives from

Finley Engineering will be asked to attend the next council meeting, January 19, 2015, to answer fur-ther questions.

During the public good and welfare portion of the evening’s meeting, a citizen inquired about raising the speed limit on the west portion of 1st Street from the current 30 miles per hour to 40, citing that there were no crossing streets to pose any possible danger and no residences. The coun-cil demurred on the issue, citing that one lane is in Lamar and the other is in Lamar Heights, making it a complicated matter.

It's a Christmas mira-

cle... after going a month without, I finally have a working phone at my desk. Truth be told, it

was kind of nice on my end and I got a lot more work done without hav-ing to stop to answer the phone. However, the op-posite was true for Melis-sa, who ended up having to answer the majority of the calls! I'm sure me getting a working phone was probably tops on her Christmas list, as now

she will be able to get her work done without interruption. Christmas is a busy time of year, between special sections being sold and people wanting to take advan-tage of the Christmas gift subscription. It is a time of year that I always look forward to hearing from people that I normally don't hear from, except at Christmastime and unfortunately, since hav-ing no phone, Melissa has been able to speak to the majority of the peo-ple that I normally do and truth be told, I miss them!

We at the Democrat have been trying our hardest to get into the Christmas spirit, but unfortunately we don't seem to be succeeding very well. Maybe it has something to do with the dark, dreary days with no sign of sunshine. Melissa has been playing Christ-mas music the last couple of days and we even had a “mini” Christmas party yesterday, complete with Melissa's girls, McKinley, 8 and Emily, 2, as well as Heather's little Maltese, Nala. If nothing else it was fun watching the girls opening their gifts, as well as us “big girls” getting to open ours.

It will be nice to take time off during Christ-mas, if nothing else to just sleep in and be lazy. We have no plans, as ev-eryone is so scattered. Jud's wife Meghan is a nurse and is scheduled to work that day, so Jud and grandson Landon will probably stop by for a Christmas brunch, com-plete with stewy cheese. My great-grandmother, Della Sherman, was a product of the Depres-sion and one of the foods she always made, that was passed down from generation to genera-tion, was stewy cheese. Sounds crazy, but all it is is cheddar cheese cut up in biscuit size pieces, sea-soned with salt, pepper and garlic salt, and then water is poured over it all. Cook it in the oven until the cheese is melted and serve over hot bis-cuits.

I had made a Thanks-giving brunch for all the gang and in my addled

state of mind had for-gotten all about stewy cheese until I saw Jud's disappointment at me not making it, so.... guess our Christmas brunch will have to feature stewy cheese. At least that's easier than a complete, traditional turkey din-ner!

The weekend after Christmas we will have Kobyn, so will have our family gathering at that time. It will also be Gary's birthday the day after Christmas and Landon's second birthday the day after that. Maybe by then I will be moved by the spirit enough to enjoy the season. After all, it does all come down to the reason for the sea-son, and what a blessed reason it is.

So Merry Christmas to all and may all my read-ers enjoy spending time with family and friends and here's to wishing ev-eryone a very happy and prosperous new year.

Letter to editorDear Editor:Please don't bah-hum-

bug Christmas this year, It's a season of giving, of love and good cheer. Think of the good things with which we've been blessed. It's a time to be thankful, not a time to

be stressed. Christmas is giving in unconditional love. The way that God gave us His Son from above. The gift that He gave was a true sacri-fice, yet He never once whined that the price was too high.

Freely we have received and so should we give, showing the world that through us Christ still lives. Hasn't He given us all that we've needed? We can give gifts to others, if His word we have heed-ed. Gifts of our funds,

of our talents, our time, Christians it's Christmas, let's let our light shine!

Please don't be bah-humbug Christmas this year. Rejoice and be glad for it's good news to hear!

JOHN R.BRENNAN, JR.

LAMAR-Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, at Daniel Funeral Home for John Ritchey Brennan, Jr., 52, Lamar, who died Sunday evening, Dec. 14, 2014, at Barton County Memorial Hospital. Hon-oring his wishes, crema-tion took place following the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Barton County Memorial Hospi-tal, in care of the funeral home.

Condolences may be shared at www.danielfu-neralhome.net.

Survivors include his wife, Sherri, of the home; a son, Travis Brennan and wife Blair, Grain Valley; a stepson, Courten Eador, Texas; a sister, Patti Bren-nan, Caddo Mills, Texas; a niece, Megan Dawson and husband Nathan, Caddo Mills, Texas, sev-eral cousins and a large extended family.

Mr. Brennan was born Nov. 22, 1962, in Kansas City, Mo., to John Sr. and Mary (Howarton) Bren-nan. Growing up in the country his natural abil-ity to care for livestock and break horses pre-pared him well for his

lifelong career as a ranch manager. He worked for Owen-Good Ranch, first near Belton and later in the Jerico Springs area.

He married Sherri Wil-son on May 23, 1998, at Arcola.

KEITH ALDEN PAGE

Keith Alden Page, 82, Lamar, Missouri passed away on December 15, 2014 at his home sur-rounded by his family. The family will meet with friends and family to the celebrate the life of Keith from 1 to 2 p.m. in "Rob-erts Hall" located at West-minster Presbyterian Church in Ottawa, Kan. The graveside cremation memorial service will im-mediately follow at Ever-green Mound Cemetery, Ottawa, Kan. That date will be announced at a later time.

He was born on March 30, 1932 in Ottawa, Kan. to George Abraham and Lottie Fay “Hoopes” Page. On September 2, 1951 in Ottawa Kan. Keith married his high school sweetheart, Betty “Betsy” J. Farris (she survives of the home). They enjoyed over 63 years of life to-gether.

Keith graduated from Ottawa High School in 1949 where he was Mr. OHS and captain of the football team his senior year. After high school he was a member of the Kan-sas City Golden Glove Boxing Team and won the Golden Glove award for his boxing achieve-ments. After graduation he worked on the R.B Ranch in Rantoul, Kan. until 1954. When his fa-ther became ill he went back to work on the Page Dairy Farm, northwest of Ottawa, Kan., where he

was born and raised. He then co-owned and op-erated the Grade A dairy farm that included farm-ing over 500 acres and milking at least 100 head of cattle a day along with his brother, Harlan Page.

He graduated from the Graham School for Cattleman, a school for breeding and herd man-agement for the dairy in-dustry. Keith also served on several boards for the Franklin County com-munity, was a member of the Mid-America Dairy-men Association and a 60 year member of the Ot-tawa Masonic Lodge No. 18.

One of Keith’s hobbies that he started as a young man, that involved his love of horses, was break-ing and training them. This hobby grew into breaking about four hors-es a year until 1978. The family enjoyed watching the “Keith Page Rodeo’s” in the farm barnyard and how he could transform a horse from a wild one to a gentle tame horse ready to ride.

In 1978, at the age of 46, he retired from the dairy farm and moved with his wife Betsy to Capitan, N.M., where he could return back to his love of ranching. In 1980 he managed the Flying W Diamond Ranch, a 15,000 acre cattle ranch located in the Capitan and Tuscan Mountain ranges of New Mexico. He also worked part time as a ranch hand on the O Bar O Ranch, a 260,000 acre cattle ranch located in the Sacramen-to Mountains of New Mexico. He so enjoyed the mountain life of New Mexico and spending time doing the things he loved to do such as camp-ing, fishing, snow skiing, traveling and horseback riding with the love of his life, his wife Betsy.

In 2000 he and his wife moved to Lamar, Mis-souri to be closer to their children and grandchil-dren, that he loved and enjoyed so much. Many of the Page holidays were held in Lamar and he looked forward to having his family all together and listening to all of the sto-ries being told. In 2001 he

was diagnosed with Mul-tiple Sclerosis and had fought it courageously.

Keith leaves behind his family to cherish his memory. His wife Betty “Betsy” J. Page of the home, his two sons Ran-dy S. Page and wife Deb-bie of Girard Kan., Benny K. Page and his wife Cathi of Ottawa Kan. and a daughter Vicki K. Whita-cre and husband Bruce of Ottawa, Kan. and a sister Norma “Page” Waymire and sister in-law Eliza-beth Page, all of Ottawa, Kan. Grandchildren, Wendy Johnson and hus-band Jack, Holland Mich., Holly Sagehorn and hus-band Kip, Pittsburg Kan., Brandon

Whitacre and wife Stephanie, Olathe, Kan., Brodi Gallick and husband Blake, Watsonville,Calif., Benny Keith Page Jr. and wife Felissa, Ottawa, Kan., Jo-sey Page and wife Saman-tha, Triadelphia, W.V. and six great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Harlan Page and Jack “Page” Leckliter.

“ I’m going home, I’m going home When my life here is over I’m go-ing home, Won’t it be so sweet, to rest at Jesus’ feet”...

Keith will be missed by his family very much but all will take great pride in his life, knowing that he did it “His Way” and “Job well Done.”

In honor of Keith’s love of animals the family sug-gests memorial contri-butions to Prairie Paws Animal Shelter, 3173 Hw K68, Ottawa Kan. 66067.

Pastor's NoteBy MARK TURNBOUGH

Lamar United Methodist Church

Ebola is a reminder that not everything in the world has a quick fix. Not to be overly dramatic, but it could wreak havoc in the world, as did the influenza epidemic of 1918. The first out-break of that virus struck a company cook, Al-bert Gitchell, at Fort Riley on March 4. In one week that virus hit over 500 men and reached to Queens N.Y. Ten percent of the world’s pop-ulation caught it and up to 1/3 of those died. That flu was most lethal in young virile adults. Could we imagine the deaths, all at once, of 150 people inside these city limits? We hope that stringent and careful measures will stop this disease right now! There is no alternative!

Nevertheless, ebola is a reminder, life is ten-uous. May we live each day with ebullience, kindness and faith. For me, my confidence is in Christ, “Whoever believes in me shall never die.” Jn. 11:26. Your church talks about eternal life every Sunday. While Barton County has a lower attendance rate than the rest of Missouri, five percent lower, why not be one of those who reverses that trend?

The board was apprised of the high school/vo-

tech advisory team which is addressing the prob-lems of at risk students. The team has adopted a program of question and answer sessions with at risk students to learn from their peers how fail-ure in their classes can be overcome. The advisory team plans to bring in various speakers each month to provide at risk students with additional insight and advice.

The board accepted the resignation of Sher-ri Luce, effective at the

end of the semester. She taught fifth grade at West Elementary. A teaching contract was offered to Dakoda Arens to teach special education at East Primary. He is a Decem-ber, 2014 graduate of Missouri Southern State University. Four more names were added to the list of substitute teachers for the district. They are Kevin Clauson, Misty Marti, Anne Miles, and Brittany Lampe.

The monthly video from the Missouri School

Boards Association warned school districts to look for a tight state budget. Missouri’s school districts are already un-derfunded by more than $5 million.

Superintendent Dr. Zach Harris told the board that the Christ-mas vacation seems to be well timed. It will give students time to recover from sicknesses, which now appear to be wide-spread throughout the student body.

comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capa-ble of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devo-tion exist, and you know that they abound and give your life its high-est beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make toler-able this existence.

We should have no en-joyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which child-hood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christ-

mas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus com-ing down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor man can see. Did you ever see fair-ies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that is no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the un-seen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the su-pernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa Claus! Thank God! He lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10

times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to

make glad the heart of childhood.

Love,Aidan Loveall

My favorite Christmas memory was last Christ-mas when my Grand-parents bought me a water gun. This summer my brother broke it. He is jelous. When he gets something I feel the same way. Later that day we went to Branson. They have an indoor pool. We got to swim it. It was fun. We enjoyed it. We rented a cabin. It was only a two roomed cabin. I was not like home. I had to sleep on the four foot couch. It was uncomfortable. We were there for two weeks. We had dinner with fam-ily members. It was fun. I really liked it. We also went shopping. Once we went to a cave. I rode the teacups. I also rode the dumbos. It was not that fun, to tell you the truth I don't like that ride It made my mom sick. I got dizzy. Then I barfed. We went back to the cabin. I went to bed. I started to fall asleep, but my broth-er woke me up. I jumped out of bed and ran after him. Instead I slept in my grandparents room.

Braeden Markley

Let me tell you about my Christmas memo-ries. Every year I do Miss Merry Christmas. I love Miss Merry Christmas! I've never won any place. I'm really hoping that I will win a place this year. Every year for Christmas Maddie, Jordan, Brittany and I always get PJ's. But last year my mom and my step dad tricked us, we got stockings! We were all like we know what this is it is PJs but it wasn't PJs. It was a stock-ing! Then we opened up our PJs and we all laughed. Those are my memories.

Megan Tummons

My Favorite Christmas Memory is at My Home. We always open our presents first and then we play with them. Next we go to my Aunt and Un-

cle's home. Everyone will get a present and then we will go to My grandmas home. There we will play a game and then we will go to my other grandma's house. The last place we will go is home. What a great time Christmas is with my family!

This is my favorite Christmas memory. We were at my grand-ma Nancy's house and every year she has a Huges Christmas. We play a lot of games. One of the games was a paper puzzle. The grown ups all got a partner and there own puzzle. They had to put the puzzle togeth-er as fast as they could. The team that puts the puzzle together the fastest gets a prize. Another game thats fun is a two people sack race. We all got partners, mine was Lottie. We got into a pillow case and the race started. We start-ed at the living room and went threw the room with the com-puter than around the table and back to the living room. A lot of people fell. I think me and Lottie won but I don't remember.
