EveryRotarian isdifferent.EveryRotarianwasdrawninto Rotary for different reasons, and many vividlyremember their first “Rotary Moment” – the momentwhen they went from being members of their Rotary clubs tobeingcommittedRotarians.
I love hearing these stories and learning about what dreweachRotarianintoRotary.Forsome,itwasaRotaryoffice,aparticularproject,oraconvention.Forme,itwasa speaker at an ordinary weekly meeting of the RotaryClubofYashio, abouttwoyearsafterI’djoined.

In 2013, all districts will have the opportunity to
support vocational training teams (VTTs) with Rotary
Foundation grants. These teams of Rotarian and non-
Rotarian professionals will travel abroad to meet a
humanitarianneed,eitherbyteachinglocalprofessionals

VTTs, like Group Study Exchanges (GSEs), can be
sponsoredbydistrictgrants,whichhavenoareaoffocus
requirements.Districts6200and9600useddistrictgrants
to organize a VTT exchange dealing with the environmental
impact of oil spills VTTs can also be sponsored by global
grants
Some districts have expressed disappointment that
theFoundationwillno longersupport theGSEprogram.
However, many districts have had difficulty finding
professionals who meet the program requirements,
forcing the Foundation to grant dozens of exceptions
to the GSE guidelines every year. Under Future Vision,
districts can still sponsor such activities through district
grantsand search forpartnerson theDistrictGrantVTT

October is the month of Vocational Service. I amincreasinglyfocusingonhowwecouldmakebetteruseof the huge competences that are represented in our variousvocations.Notnursingour“networkofinspiredindividuals” for the benefit of ourselves, but for thebenefitofourlocalcommunities.
One of my numerous Rotary moments happened the first time I observed a vocational service projectin Finland as the RI President’s representative at adistrict conference. Itwas aprojectnamed “Ticket totheFuture”dedicatedtoyoungpeopleages15-16.Theprojectprovidedthemwithgoodskillsandcompetencesforthebenefitoftheirfuturevocationalcareer.
It isquitenatural thatone of the goals within the strategic priority of Enhancing Public Image and Awareness is to emphasize vocational service. As such, it may contribute effectively to the “magiccircle”: Enhancing public image and awareness leadstomoremembersandagaintomoreserviceprojects, contributingtoanevenbetterpublicimage.
Inmy first year as RC I set a goal to increase thenumberofclubsthatemphasizevocationalserviceandtheir public image. I am not sure that I was entirelysuccessful, sothisyearIrepeatedthegoal.I decided to identify the vocational service profile of the districts anduseanyopportunitytopromotevocationalserviceas a relevant public image tool
IwaspleasedtoreadPresidentSakuji’smessageintheOctoberissueofTheRotarianfromwhereIquote,“The goal of a person doing business is not only to earn a living. The purpose is to be a contributing member of the community, to make the community stronger, and to help make other people’s lives better.”
Wehave to see vocational service and communityservice as awhole. In thatway, our horizonsmay bebroaderthanjustinvitinggoodspeakersfrombusinesslife andnursingourown internal network. LetusnotforgetthatRotaryisServiceAboveSelf–andnot“aboutself.”
