Happy Father’s Day

Dear Friends,When I was first ordained 30 years ago and assigned to St. Ann Neponset/Dorchester I saw first hand how pastors have many anxious moments when it comes to the financial administration of a parish. Fr. Tom Walsh shared with me many difficult experiences of learning how to scrape together funds to pay the parish bills. As a young priest I was so thankful then that I had the early opportunity to learn how to be a priest without the worry and anxiety of the administration of a parish. It is without question the hardest part of our ministry. For the past 20 years that I have been a pastor it has been and continues to be the reason for many a sleepless night or moment of stress for me personally. Asking for the financial support and petitioning families to donate money to the successful operation of the parish is something I deeply dislike but also realize is often necessary as well. This bulletin letter is one of those moments.

Last Fall when we all experienced the disaster of the Lower Hall’s ceiling collapse I asked then for your generous support to complete the restoration without having to borrow any money with a loan. You responded to that request and I hope you would agree with me that the new hall looks terrific. Your generosity made that happen and please know how grateful I am for that financial support. Unfortunately the time of year for that request also meant that the much needed Grand

Annual Collection did not take place and took a back seat to our immediate financial need: the restoration of the Hall. The Grand Annual Collection, again because of your generosity, usually contributes $75,000 or so to the day to day operations of the Parish. That loss has created a real financial concern for the parish.

With the summer months upon us and vacation time for many of our families we always experience a decline in our weekly collections. In looking over some recent past summer collection tally sheets some weeks the collection can be as low as $2,500.00. Those numbers have me worried (not sleeping!) and our Finance Committee encouraging me to act soon on our need to increase our parish revenue. It simply must be done if we are to remain solvent and meet our financial responsibilities.

Some time over the next few weeks we will all hear at our weekend liturgies from a member of the Parish’s Finance Committee who will lay out our need to respond once again to our Parish’s financial concerns. I am hoping that you might prayerfully consider how you can increase your financial support of our parish going forward. I want to thank you in advance for your generous response to this critical issue.

God Bless you all.

ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEJUNE 17, 2018

Grow UnobservedThe farmer sows seeds in the earth and then waits. He will use a scythe (“blade”) to reap the crop when it is ready. Then he and his neighbors with him will gather it into piles, or “pooks” as they were called in England, so that the farmer by counting pooks could know how much grain to expect from his harvest. Next, threshing, separating the husks and straw from the grain, followed in older cultures by winnowing, which detached the heavier grain from the lighter chaff.

This is the process described to me by an Irish friend as we drove around his country. He said this older method promoted community among farmers as

they helped one another. The invention in America of the combine in the early 19th century made it possible for each farmer to reap, thresh and winnow all alone, using the combine harvester. Despite all their efficiency, giant machine-driven harvesting makes it possible to forget the mystery of growth and human effort, as well as community.

For his part, Jesus was much more interested in persons and the miracle of the yield. The first parable in the Gospel for Sunday shows us that. A farmer scatters seeds on the land and waits. His ordinary life then continues. He would

sleep and rise night and day,

and through it all the seed would sprout and grow,he knows not how.Of its own accord the land yields fruit, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.

Jesus gives quiet admiration to this act of life. Seeds begin as tiny morsels and become, by the time the farmer can discern, sprouts. Then they burgeon into a whole field of crops, finally ready for harvest. The farmer has waited modestly for the mysterious process to take place.

Jesus compares this everyday miracle to the Kingdom of God. The Catholic Encyclopedia says the Kingdom of God is “a tone of mind (Luke 17:20-21),” that “stands for an influence which must permeate men's minds if they would be one with [Jesus] and attain to his ideals” (Catholic Encyclopedia, p. 646, “The Kingdom of God”). The seeds of love are planted in human souls and grow up unobtrusively, easy to miss, as each person sleeps and wakes.

In the second parable the humility of the seed is apparent. Jesus says that a mustard seed is the smallest of all the seeds on earth. In fact it was not, so I am told. Smaller still are the petunia, the begonia and orchid seeds. But the tiny mustard seed (the size of a pinhead) unassumingly grows to be a great shrub or even a tree, one that is taller than a man’s head! The white mustard species grew to ten or twelve feet with a stem the size of a man's arm! It was well known in Israel.

How does this apply to the Kingdom of God? Well, we are small. The movements of the Spirit in us are so modest as to be nearly disregarded. Yet if we are patient, if we watch for growth within us, in winter and in spring rain, the Spirit gradually will surge up and will give us the yield of much fruit.

It is a miracle of growth in plants and trees, but even more in the goodness and grace that is God’s kingdom in us.John Foley, SJ

John Foley, SJFr. John Foley, SJ, is a composer and scholar at Saint Louis University.

THE PERSPECTIVE OF JUSTICE

Confidence It is difficult at times for Christians to maintain their hope in the coming of the Kingdom. The power of evil seems overwhelming, and the world presents itself as a formidable foe. The weapons of prayer and good works seem insignificant in a world of multicorporations and intercontinental missiles.

Paul assures us, however, that “we continue to be confident,” and “we are full of confidence.” What is the source of this confidence? It comes from having a God “who is our hope and our strength, who brings low the high tree and lifts high the low tree.” Having a God who makes the withered tree bloom gives us the courage to continue in the face of overwhelming odds.

It also helps to know that the Kingdom is not like the world, which prides itself on its longest bridges

and tallest buildings and biggest cities and most powerful armies. The image of the Kingdom is the mustard seed, “the smallest of all the earth’s seeds.” In the Kingdom, one does not have to be president or king to make a difference; the smallest person is great and powerful. In the Kingdom, you don't have to lead successful military campaigns to change the course of history; the smallest action has unlimited potential.

There is no justification for despair or pessimism or inertia. Though it be with sorrow, it must be said that just as one may sin through selfishness and the desire for excessive profit and power, one may also be found wanting with regard to the urgent needs of multitudes of human beings submerged in conditions of underdevelopment, through fear, indecision and, basically, through cowardice.Pope John Paul II, Sollicitudo Rei Socialis,

1987:47.

DEDICATION of THE GARDEN of PRAYERat HOLY CROSS CEMETERY

e Catholic Cemetery Association and Holy Cross Cemetery are pleased to announce the opening of “e Garden of Prayer” a multi-phase Garden

located within Holy Cross Cemetery. e Garden of Prayer provides a serene and peaceful location for families to spend time and visit their loved

ones.

In honor of this event we invite all to visit us between 11–2 in the Garden of Prayer and pick up a Rose. We welcome you to walk the bluestone path

to the Resurrection Columbarium, sit on a reection bench and take in the peacefully setting and pray to those we have had return to their eternal

home.

Let us share the beauty of this event with the rose you’ll be given. “Providing a Place of Peace in Our Faith”
