Propolis and it's effects on fungus or candida What is Candida?Candida is a form of parasitic fungus which resemble yeasts and occurespecially in the mouth, vagina, and intestinal tract. Though usuallybenign, they can become pathogenic, causing diseases includingcandidiasis and thrush. The List of Studies on the Effects of Propolis on Candida 1) *Effect of commercial ethanol propolis extract on the in vitro growth of Candida albicans collected from HIV-seropositive and HIV-seronegative Brazilian patients with oral candidiasis.**Authors:*Martins RS; Preira ES; Lima SM; Senna MI; Mesquita RA; Santos VRDepartment of Clinical Pathology and Surgery, School of Dentistry, MinasGerais Federal University, Belo Horizonte, Brazil.*Summary of Research:*The present study assessed the susceptibility of Candida albicansstrains, collected from HIV-positive patients with oral candidiasis, toa commercial 20% ethanol propolis extract (EPE) and compare it to theinhibitory action of the standardized antifungal agents nystatin (NYS),clotrimazole (CL), econazole (EC), and fluconazole (FL).Twelve C. albicans strains collected from HIV-positive patients withoral candidiasis were tested. The inhibition zones were measured with apachimeter and the results are reported as means and standard deviation(M +/- SD).Data were analyzed statistically by the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallistest. EPE inhibited all the C. albicans strained tested. No significantdifference was observed between the results obtained with NYS and EPE,while significant differences were observed between EPE and otherantifungals. The C. albicans strains tested showed resistance to the remainingantifungal agents. The propolis extract used in this study inhibited thein vitro growth of C. albicans collected from HIV-seropositive Brazilianpatients, creating/forming inhibition zones like those ones formed by NYS.This fact suggests that commercial EPE could be an alternative medicinein the treatment of candidiasis from HIV-positive patients. However, invivo studies of the effect of EPE are needed to determine its possibleeffects on the oral mucosa.*Journal:* Juornal of Oral Science*Issue:* 2002 Mar;44(1):41-8.------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2) *Seasonal Effect of Brazilian Propolis on Candida albicans AND Candida tropicalis**Authors: *J. M. SFORCIN,A. FERNANDES JNIOR, C. A. M. LOPES, S. R. C.FUNARI, V. BANKOVA*1*. Departamento de Microbiologia e Imunologia, Instituto deBiocincias, Universidade Estadual Paulista, Botucatu, So Paulo, Brasil;*2* Institute of Organic Chemistry with Centre of Phytochemistry,Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, 1113, Sofia, Bulgaria.*Summary of Research:*Recently, propolis has been attracting the attention of researchers dueto various biological activities and therapeutic properties. In Brazil, propolis is produced all year long, so there may be some seasonalvariations. This work was carried out in order to compare propolis collected duringthe four seasons by its/ in vitro/ antimicrobial activity on yeastpathogens isolated from human infections. Propolis was produced byafricanized honeybees in Botucatu, So Paulo State, collected throughouta year and pooled by season.Hydroalcoholic solutions of propolis were prepared with each pool anddiluted in agar, using serial concentrations of propolis from each pool.A determination of minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was performed. The results show that/ Candida/ tropicalis and/ Candida/ albicans weresusceptible to low concentrations of propolis, the latter showing ahigher susceptibility. No differences were seen in relation to seasonaleffects in the minimal inhibitory concentration of propolis.*Journal:* Journal of Venomous Animals and Toxins*Issue:* v.7 n.1 Botucatu 2001------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3) *Antifungal activity of propolis on different species of Candida**Authors: * Claudia Ota, Carmelinda Unterkircher, Vera Fantinato, M. T.ShimizuDental School, UNESP, So Jos dos Campos, SP, University of Vale doParaba, IP & D, and Pharmacy School, So Francisco University, USF,Bragana Paulista, SP, Brasil.*Summary of Research:*Propolis is a resinous material collected by bees from the buds orother parts of plants. It is known for its biological properties, havingantibacterial, antifungal and healing properties. The antifungal activity of propolis was studied in sensitivity tests on80 strains of Candida yeasts: 20 strains of Candida albicans, 20strains of Candida tropicalis, 20 strains of Candida krusei and 15strains of Candida guilliermondii. The yeasts showed a clear antifungal activity with the following orderof sensitivity: C. albicans C. tropicalis C. krusei C.guilliermondii.Patients with full dentures who used a hydroalcoholic propolis extractshowed a decrease in the number of /Candida/.*Journal:* Mycoses*Issue:* Volume 44 Issue 9-10 Page 375 November 2001------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4) *The effect of Brazilian Propolis on the germ tube formation and cell walls of Candida Albicans**Authors: * Andr Marinho Mello, Rafael Tomaz Gomes, Simone ResendeLara, L. Gomes Silva, Jos Bento Alves, Maria Esperanza Corts, SheilaLemos Abreu, Vagner Rodrigues Santos. .*Summary of Research:*Candidal adherence has been implicated as the first step in thepathogenesis of oralcandidosis, and germ tube formation by Candida albicans has beenattributed as co-factor that promotes adherence.Propolis, a natural product produced by the honeybee, has been shown topossess antifungal activity although the mechanism of its action remainsunclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the germ tube formationcapacity of C.albicans (ATCC18804) following its exposure to BrazilianGreen Propolis (BGP) at different concentrations. The ultrastructuraltopographic features of the yeast cells exposed to propolis usingtransmission electron microscopy (TEM) and light microscopy (LM) wereperformed to investigate the morphology of the yeast. Yeast cellsuspensions were added to tubes containing foetal calf serum medium (2h-37C). Nystatin and C. glabrata (ATCC 2001) were used as control.Absence of germ tube formation (LM) occurred at 0,33 g/mL. Theultrastructural findings (TEM) showed hyperplasia and changes in thecell surface at 0,43 g/mL . It is suggested that the antifungalactivity of propolis is due to changes in the cell wall leading to anincrease of volume and membrane rupture. The positive results suggestthat propolis should be further tested as an alternative therapy forinfectious conditions of the oral cavity, such candidiasisand denture stomatitis.*Journal:* Pharmacologyonline*Issue:* Archive 29 2 Responses to /Propolis and it's effects on fungus or candida/ 1. Susan Di Santo April 3, 2011 at 4:44 pm I suffered from frequent cyctitis, brought on by stress. The back to back infections and doses of antibiotic treatment brought on gut problems I didn't relate the concurrent frequent athletes foot, ringworm, fungal toenails infections, ocassional oral & vaginal thrush, ear itchiness, vison irregularities and eventually hip joint pain, bourts of depression and brain fog until a friend pointed me to leaky gut & systemic candida. I got rid of the skin stuff & nails with tea tree, lavender oil & sea salt, citrcidal particularly for bathing etc. I sucked then swallowed raw propolis when on holiday where fammily in Italy keep bees, while I ate lots of garlic and lemon juice, no wheat and dairy. After aboput 2 weeks I noiced headaches (Herxheimer reaction from detoxing) and a dark red itchy rash down the inside of my upper arms candida leaving my body? I think so. I also stayed off wine , vinegar and yeasty foods as well as mushrooms. After a couple of months I took some high quality probiotic supplements freeze dried, no FOS added (brand VSL#3)If it's not kept in the fridge and sold in brown glass or foil sealed pack do not buy, it's rubbish. Other things for candida internal blitz is a 2month diet started if you can with a 3 day juice fast & using enemas for colon clear out, trying the following oral antifunals: Coconur oil, citricidal, oregano oil, Pau D'Arco, olive leaf complex, chlorella. Learn about body PH and what keeps your body PH low in foods. This helps to kill off candida. Be prepared to feel low and a bit ill and liverish while you detox Candida die-off. introduce brown rice buckwheat carb alternatives when you start to lose weight and need energy. maybe dairy and more meat. Take EFA Omegas 3, lots of greens, nori, avocados, raw as much as poss. little fish and tofu. Almonds, pumkin, sesame, sunflower & chia seeds. Cracked flax and hemp seeds all in salads, (few crushed walnuts are nice too). Learn about calcium, potassium & magnesium and unrefined celtic sea salt. Salt free can be bad almost as bad as refined salty diet. Keep practicing a good diet habits. stay off alcohol, but if you really must for occasional social things, vodka with fresh lemon or tomato is not the worst. (for me wine always brought back cystitis symptoms intitially so I've stayed off it). It's hard but if you are determined to get rid of Candida you will feel so much better, fit and alive. Reply 2. Charles Giltner October 14, 2010 at 8:07 pm The use of propolis in humans seems to have a long and positive history and I am interested in learning about how to actually administer it as a most effective form of treatment for internal candida albicans overgrowth presenting in toenail fungus and ringworm as well as periodontal infection and immune response as well as overall beneficial use for improved health. In this light, I have purchased some unprocessed raw honey with beeswax, propolis and enzymes and would like some feedback on how to dose, apply or administer the honey either orally, ingested or topically in this form or with little processing. Please respond to this comment by email to [email protected] Thanks cg Also, it would be interesting to learn if there is a way to artificially reproduce propolis either chemically or by natural harvesting and processing of the source of the propolis ingredients from the plant sources sidestepping the bees. I am sure this is a tall order, but it would prove to be a popular product in our current and future environmental and health care circumstances. As global warming increases, microbiological organisms will increase in geometrically proportionate fashion. This will have a tremendous effect on human health, animal husbandry, agriculture and civilization as a whole since the effective control of many of the microbiological entities is limited at best. An effective alternative to antibiotic medicines that destroy intestinal flora would be a benefit to all mankind. Any takers on this line of thinking or is there already studies and attempts at this lofty goal? I'd like your thought, whoever you are reading this! Best wishes and great information on the site.
